It's so bizarre to read that SS2 was "one of the first" games to use audio logs, when of course it uses them because SS1 did years earlier, a fact that the article doesn't even mention.

The problem with the Russian audiologs page is related to encoding. Some browsers (I tested it in Edge and Chromium) mistakenly assume that the page is encoded in windows-1252. Adding <meta charset="utf-8"/> to the page (between <head> and <body>) seem to fix the problem, at least locally.

alternatively i could just say just audio logs, not emails, although that would UNNECESSARILY ROB VIEWERS of awkwardly attempting to do the monkey easter egg as fast as possible

You can't do an all audio logs run anyway. On Ops/Rec SHODAN will send a different message depending on whether you've completed the Ops tasks or the Rec tasks first.

The message SHODAN gives you numbered 64 and labelled "Note: This is a possible alternate version of the above email, but did not appear in the game." actually does appear in game, if you don't destroy all the eggs, SHODAN will block your attempts to open the first keycard door in rickenbacker pod 3, giving you that message.

I wanted to route an all audio logs speedrun, but the sheer existence of that log requiring you to traverse pod 2 three times (assuming you just leave the last egg unshattered, which is fastest) just leaves a sour taste in my mouth...  I mean for branching ones i'd have to bend rules but that's just something i wouldn't have fun doing thanks to that one email

And besides, frames are not useless. They're a technology and like any technology it can be used for good. Or bad.
Like if you have to display a fucking table then use a table. Don't let them make you use DIVs with table properties, because if tables sucked then DIVs who try to act like tables are god damn hellspawn.
And I would argue that in this case, of site that needs to be easily maintainable and useful, frames are fine. The alternative would be loading shit via AJAX and that's not easily maintainable.

The rounded corner graphics need to go though, I agree on that.

I am an actual web designer and I think it's okay. Not good or anything, but it does the job. Most of the time.

I have studied web design of things a bit and using frames and separate html's is kinda obsolete technique.
Not that I am the one to show exactly how its done (last time I did a website I used frames but later learned I was doing webpages in the 90's way) but I just noticed this and I thought to voice this concern.

Not sure which media player I have associated with certain file type, probably VLC, but still, I only see one half
of the player whenever I select an log to listen to.

I'm having a hard time working out whick russian translation is the best. Right now, I have Fargus (no strings, sounds) and webcoll (strings and sounds). The quality (can't judge the correctness because I don't speak the language) seems to differ from log to log. The webcoll strings do not seem to match the spoken word at all.

I know of more versions:
7 Wolf - claimed as wrong Fargus. Don't know what that is about.
AlexSoft & Fargus - i get the impression that this is the best!?

I would like to get them all, but I don't trust torrents very much.
And the downloads always seem to include the complete game, which I'm not very comfortable with.

To summarize: Which russian version has the most accurate translation and best audio? And are there any "no torrent" downloads?

Is there still work going on for the spanish dubbed version that we talked about here?
I just went throught the list of let's play videos by spanish gamers and there quite a lot of them. Maybe some of them would be interested in helping you to do the dubbing. It's a plus that they have equipement and recording know-how and considering that some are doing videos reguarly, maybe there is a higher "skill" for good voice acting.

About your suggestions for the audiolog page: thanks, I will look into that and see what I can incorporate.

i am a fan of ss2, i play it everytime i can, but at this time i had not so much time

you know i had a spanish audiolog page based on arkero99 translation  (from clandlan.net)  ... i had some text/entries you dont have .. if you wish you can check it to sync our audiologs

i had some extra spanish entries for "bananas" (the intelligent monkey easter egg), the many, and some others .. and have some differences too, (like "the trainer" and myers for example) .. i checked personally some of these entries by hand  ... for example, there are different characters with same voice, or swapped portraits

my spanish audiolog is here -> http://netgamer.cl/ss2  ... you know it looks pretty much like yours because is based on it when you had not spanish audiolog yet, i based on systemshock.org template but i keep the credits

dont flame me tellying i am a copycat, anyone can do whatever web page he wants.. for me systemshock.org audiologs are the only official one, but not the only .. the point is make it collaborative, check it and feel free to do whatever discussion you want .. my spanish audiolog is old and  was intended as a backup and a help to spanish audio files transcription in same site

@Koyla: OK, so I checked a McKay log, and it uses the picture that is labeled McKay here. So both Malone and McKay use the McKay picture. I'm not clear on what you are saying about your mod. Does it address this bug as well, or does it just address the Morris/Wood situation? I'm not using the ADaOB mod, just SHTUP, 400, Olfred, Tacticool and a couple of Vurt's.

When I play the 2 messages from Malone (in game), the picture that displays is the one that is labeled as McKay on the Audio Logs page here. I haven't got to McKay on this playthrough, so I'm not sure which picture is associated with him in the game yet.

I'm always selecting the OEM850 before editing anything, the problem is not Notepad++ (the special characters are ok there)
the problem is that the ò is not displaying correctly in-game... I get it, but as a capital letter (even at the end of a word)...

...tried many things but I don't know what I'm doing wrong :(

Also, i removed many blank spaces (mainly after the full stops) which I tought were errors, but then I realized they were
there on purpose... still removing them didn't break anything (at the moment...) should I restore them?

I'm still going on with the translation hoping there won't be anymore "hiccups"  ;)

For the sake of convenience, I would recommend adding a shortcut for switching to the desired codepage.
In Notepad++ go to the menu 'Macros' and then 'Change Shortcuts/Delete Makros'.
Then specify a shortcut/key-combo as seen here.
Note that you need to push that key-combo whenever you open any of those .str files for editing again,
otherwise special characters will look garbled in Notepad++ and any further changes would use the wrong codepage.

No need to feel 'pedantic'. You are on the right track doing that sort of change since it sounds absolutely correct.

the Italian language has not many special characters and I only need the following: è ò à ù
no problems with è à and ù, they're showing correctly in-game, but I'm getting a big capital ò... what should I do?

As per Kolya's suggestions, I'm directly editing the .str files of a SSTool 5.1 patched, fresh from cd installed SS2 with Notepad++

You should use an advanced editor because notepad won't preserve the linebreaks. I use Notepad++ usually, UltraEdit may also work.
I suggest you use the English strings from a fresh install with SS2Tool applied (so the official patch is included).
After opening the file set "OEM 850" as the character set (in Notepad++: Main-Menu->Encoding->Character Sets->Western European->OEM 850). All special characters should show up correctly now in the editor and also later in the game. Test this.
I would save changes directly to the STR file.

I also support the idea of using a formal pronoun ("Lei") in the first part of the game and switching to "tu" after the reveal.

It will be a great honour and pleasure for me! I'll work on it as everyday life permits it! Just some things to get it right:

+ Can I edit the *.STR files in notepad and treat them like *.TXT or should I use a more advanced editor (eg. UltraEdit)?

+ Will there be problems if I save the files directly in *.STR or should I rename them to *.TXT, edit and finally rename them back?

Also I wanted to ask if I can go "The German and French way"... what I mean is that in the German and French translations

SHODAN as Polito addresses the player as "Sie / Vous" giving it some sort of importance and suggesting that the player
doesn't know her... but when and after she reveals herself to the player, she starts to use "Du / Tu"...

I think this kind of writing is very important and meaningful to the player's feelings... actually I don't know how to explain myself, but I felt it very strongly the first time I played the game (I played the German version first)...

I think Kolya and unn_atropos, who I suppose are German, understand what I mean... I'd like to go the same way for the Italian transaltion, since it is possible (while it wasn't possible in the original English version)... maybe I'm a bit too pedantic  :headshot:

That's what it means.

I've glimpsed through those logs. Just so you know, they all look like literal translation "word-for-word", with no understanding of semantics or idioms, completely changing the meaning of the original. Even if some of the sentences happen to be more or less accurate, they have horrible grammar.

well, he is certainly not referring to the mall itself, as malls, as far as I know, do not tend to crawl. therefore, it probably means something like "watch your back", "bad sh!t going down" etc - but I have to say that I don't know for sure in this particular case. we need a native speaker here.

However "It crawls!" is not an idiom here. Cortez is referring to the mall as crawling with annelids.

the correct translation from CZ would be "it reeks of trouble". not sure whether that is close enough to "it crawls".

the problem with the orig text is that it contains a lot of phrases that are really hard to translate, even if you understand them. the original cz text was full of awful translations, where the person who was translating had no idea what the phrase meant, so he just translated it word by word, sometimes making things incomprehensible, sometimes even reversing the meaning completely.

example - throwing a monkey wrench does not mean that you literally throw a wrench that was previously owned by an ape at somebody. it means you want to sabotage whatever the person was trying to accomplish. unloading both barrels into someone's stomach does not mean cleaning his pipes, it means killing with a shotgun. etc, etc.
