Although, the Japanese version of SS1 apparently used kanji somehow, and the Dark Engine inherits a lot of font handling code from SS1, so maybe there's a way to use 16-bit character encoding lurking in the engine.
The default character encoding is CP850, but for this you'd probably use something like JIS X 0201.
