..and the audio/text version of the mod has now reached the same amount of downloads as the text only original, which is available since the beginning of time.

not bad.

well, I also have the GOG EE build, and using the v1.06 mod, I see no corruption. try to share a save? but even with a save, I really don't know what could I do here. lets maybe try to call @dertseha and see whether something can be checked in the editor?

is this also happening when you use the text only version of the mod?

It's like this but it's different on each new game I tested. Sometimes it's a dot and followed by different letters, very strange. Did I get the wrong file version perhaps? I have the GOG version.

yes, something similar has been reported a while ago, but I'm almost sure it's (save)game corruption, and not an issue with the mod. post screenshots maybe, and what build of the game are you using? SS1EE?

try to disable the mod and see whether the issue goes away.

Hey I just made the account because I wanted to say that I really enjoy this mod as it was impossible for me to listen to the audio while reading logs that don't match up. But in the first  two logs I picked up I see some errors in the logs, like at the end I see .ess or .en or something. Anyone else?

nothing is important in a long enough run. anyway, managed to get your save working (had to rename it for some reason, else it wouldn't show), and yes, the new CYBSTRNG.RES fixes the issue (but do confirm if you don't mind). good to know that for tiny text tweaks such as this one, I don't even have to open the full editor, a hexedit is enough.

hrrmph.. wonder whether I should repack this as a new version or just update silently.

aha, GOG uses an older version of the port, will check (nope, it does not, not anymore. so that is not it, unless you are deliberately using an older standalone build. in that case, update). is the issue gone when you disable this mod?

also yes, random text corruption has been reported with the NDS source port (iirc just the map notes, but still sounds too familiar to be unrelated).

//tried to mess around with multiple mods at the same time, still no text corruption, however found out that Shodan Faces is not compatible with DOS Faces. kinda makes sense - iirc, only one bitmap mod can be active at the same time.

//so unless you can share a save, and/or confirm the problem does not exist when the mod is disabled, I'll write it off as random corruption not related to mods.

It's really strange. I completely reinstalled the game, changed the system locale to us english (thinking it could be the reason), and yet the problem still persists, and what's more, there are different extraneous symbols depending on the mod order (I have fire extinguisher and rad noise fixes). I also have a GOG version. It persists across saves and seems to be some negative interaction with the mod given that everything is fine when I disable it.

I played with these problems for some time and I think I got a garbled portion of a much later email (lansing/rebecca-6) on research in the early game. Maybe the text is getting corrupted or something?

there are 2 versions out there, the Classic which uses the SHlink wrapper, and the latest one, which is the source port.

either way, drop a save somewhere.

//no issue with my GOG SS1EE source port. the Stack email is one of the first ones so I actually used it to test all SS1 builds, and it was ok everywhere. so yeah, I'll need more details on your setup.

anyway, realized the source port version has been using "proper logs" from day one (script file, modfolder name), so I think I'll leave it alone for now. maybe redo the next release if I see there's confusion about the mod name in the meantime.

I guess it's an issue, though admittedly a minor one, of marketing. For a complete newbie to System Shock, who's noticed that the log text often doesn't match the audio, this would be considered an error, to be "fixed" by a mod. So "System Shock Fixed Logs" would very clearly be what they were looking for. Pull them in with the title, then lay out the subtleties in the description.

"Proper" in English is more about conforming to a higher ideal of form or behavior. Like, "Now this is a proper sandwich", or "Don't cut spaghetti with your fork, it's not proper", or "It's not really a proper merry-go-round unless there's a dung beetle on it."

What makes a thing "proper" can be vague and subject to individual opinion, so if I saw any mod with "Proper" in the title I'd be immediately suspicious that the author was trying to push some sort of personal agenda on the game.

no, it was "enhanced" originally. was kind of using "proper" for the new SP releases, so I was thinking might as well make it official. eeh do I want to switch it now? don't know.

is "proper" improper for some reason? technically, "fixed" would imply something was broken, the original texts however aren't broken, they just aren't.. proper, when you take the audio clips into consideration.

ADaOB Logs then?

updated to 1.06, just one download for all SS1 builds, and masculine references to Shodan removed from those few logs that had them (both audio and text).

mod name officially changed to Proper Logs to avoid confusion.

First of all, really cool mod and I am glad it exists.

Second, tried to make a version of this mod with female pronouns for SHODAN but can't seem to get it working (but that is in its own thread)

Third, you don't know how useful this mod was when editing the wiki. Seriously, thanks to this mod I have now documented in writing all SS1 logs with all three variants. Took me all afternoon but I got it done.

I would also highly recommend to change the transcript file as well and post the one I provided. Since the numbering in gigaquads transcript are wrong and not conform with the numbering by resource address. This lead to confusion when editing the log with hacked. Since hacked considers the first resources address of mails as 0.

it's perfectly fine, all I would recommend is keeping the name and version numbering the same, to (again) prevent confusion.

Yep, it's fixed now. So what caused the "compatibility" issue? Is the Mac format different from the DOS one?

I don't know how Gigaquad has modified the resource file. But whatever and however Gigaquad's modified it: The formating was probably off and the SP couldn't handle it anymore. The SP loads text resourcefiles differently than the old versions of the game, which caused the issue. For example: Terse text is completely ignored when the SP loads text resources. My guess is that some of the terse bits seaped into it.

My modified text resource file is especially tailored to the sourceport and can't be used with anything else. It was entierly made from scratch, using only the transscript Gigaquad's provided as well as modern tools.

I'm glad that it is fixed tho!

Please let me know if I should open a new topic or if you want to add my modified mod to the original post from Koyla.
I will release it on moddb anyway by giving credit and link to this forum.

yeah, he will have to test or post his save, I actually don't have one that would be far enough into the game, and logs from the first deck seem to work fine for me with the old mod.

new mod working ok for the little bit I've checked.

Okay, I remade the mod.
I was thinking of opening up a separate topic for it since it's very unique compared to what is currently available.
It uses gigaquads transcript but only works with the sourceport. That's why I gave it a new name.
But first I want to share it here and see what you guys think.
Also I'd like to know if the additional letters still appear for GuyFawkes after using my new version.

The last quote RocketMan wrote from SHODAN is really important. Even to me it's a very important line. The AI does not care what it is. It only knows it exists and tries to find itself. It's also an important aspect in cyberpunk. In cyberpunk everyone can switch body parts at will and be whatever they want. There is no constrains to gender or anything. It's all about existing and finding ourselves.

Supplying a modified citalog.res and citbark.res would further make the mod incompatible with other mods that might want to change those files. It would even be a completely different mod if the above files would be provided with it. That's something somebody else can do if they are really want this kind of change as a mod.

My goal of remaking the proper_logs mod for the NDS sourceport is compatibillity with other mods while staying to the initial goal of Gigaquad. This goal was to match the onscreen text to the audio heard in the CD version. Nothing more, nothing less.

« on: 27. December 2018, 16:29:09 »

If you're referring to how the CD Enhanced version added audio to the written logs already there, then I can appreciate that it would have been easier to understand if they simply correlated 1:1.  Whatever their motive or lack thereof, we have that disconnect.  However I don't see SS2 as correcting an error in SS1 on what SHODAN's gender is.  As I said, I think her gender (and indeed her personality) was meant to be an emergent property.  So while there is perhaps a case to be made about audio/written consistency in SS1 (which is what this mod is all about), I don't think the gender is specifically a part of that inconsistency.  You could change all the text to match the audio (because that's the easiest way to marry the two) but if an audio log remains that refers to SHODAN as a HE, that's pretty much canon.

It would be no different than if we met aliens and referred to them randomly as HE's or SHE's until they decided to differentiate themselves for the sake of our convenience.  SHODAN had no real form and the only telling sign that she might be female was her voice but that's not a 100% giveaway.  I've heard voices before that I mistook for the opposite gender.  Her face also makes it impossible to assign a gender since it's so rough and pixelated.  I just find it hard to believe they made a spelling mistake on a 3 letter word or some developer in the office didn't get the memo about SHODAN being a woman.  Far more plausible that they meant to obscure her gender to go along with the AI gaining self-awareness theme.

Remember the log where she says "GOD.  The title suits me well" ?  She didn't say Goddess.

yes, but the addition of the audiologs kind of spoiled that. same goes for SS2, where she is overwhelmingly feminine.
Posted by: RocketMan
« on: 27. December 2018, 00:06:41 »

My point isn't so much about the consistency (which some have argued was rather loose by design).  Rather, I think the ambiguity around SHODAN's gender was intentional and furthermore, a mechanism for character development.  SHODAN was nothing more than an aide for shipboard functions initially and this is even clear after her transformation since her hospital level transmissions are less insidious and more formal than those later in the game.  To refer to SHODAN's gender in a sort of careless and inconsistent way shows that she hadn't yet achieved the level of sentience consistent with human beings as we see them.  Even that garbled mess on the screens that is supposed to be her face was not particularly female-looking, yet we have a mod to "fix" that.  It sure was in SS2 though so there was definitely a progression in her character development that led to the unanimous acceptance that SHODAN was in fact a female.

The question is not whether SHODAN is male or female or whether the logs have poor consistency.  I think all that was done on purpose to show SHODAN's rise to sentience and her intent to take on a form of her own.  To screw with the audio and log text borders taking over authorship of the story's tone and impact on the player.

At the risk of being banned, I'll just say this.

Straight from the OP "Before neither the 'terse' nor the full text options showed the exact text as heard in the CD version of System Shock. This mod by Gigaquad syncs the texts with the audio heard from logs, emails and traps."

I see nothing here about audio and text discrepancies from 3 LOGS about Shodan's Gender. Just matching the text with the audio from the logs. Nothing more, Nothing less.

the vanilla data are not destroyed in any way upon mod activation, so no need to be concerned by that (though I've seen the opinion that EE should ship with this mod active on more than one occasion).

ideally, this mod should fix all the audio/text discrepancies, all logs referring to Shodan as "he" included, as that is also a discrepant leftover inherited from the floppy version.

consistency. it's only about three logs I think, but I still find it annoying - just like the I find annoying that the texts and audio doesn't match in the vanilla cd version.

it shouldn't be too difficult to edit the audio clips as well, turning those few instances of "he" into "she" or "it" - though I think that is beyond my skill level at the moment.

kind of weird that they didn't fix this when putting together the cd version - would have been very easy at that point.

I sure can do that audio editing, but I rather not. Even tho its annyoing to hear it, I rather not pesker with original audio files for preservation reasons.
Will try to have a with other mods compatible build out in maybe 1 or two days by making the mod conform with what the sourceport requires to be compatible. It will then only replace the text of the resources and incorporate the new credits while leaving everything else untouched.

Further investigation shows it's random letters, more combinations than I initially thought.

EDIT: changing the renderer changes the word jumbles at the end but doesn't make them go away, might be an issue with the port.

I'm going to rewrite the res file to fix some errors it might contain by using the transcript file that can be downloaded in the OG post. Since extracting it via LRC won't work. That might get rid of the additional letters problem.

I wanted to take a look at the properlog_cybstrng.res file by dumping it into raw text, but LRC gives me the following error and stops extracting res 0x0867 before string 109 of that resource.

This is either through bad formating, or the string not being empty: 109 "" or don't having the sourceport important: data ;
