System Shock 2 Photosensitive Accessibility v1.0
8 Jan 24
by ZylonBane

Requires SS2 NewDark patch v2.46 or higher.

This is an accessibility mod for players with sensitivity to flashing lights (photophobia, photosensitive epilepsy).
  • Permanently activates (or deactivates) animated lights with a brighten or dim interval of less than 1/3 second.
  • Removes full-screen flashes from standard damage, radiation damage, and psi burnout.
  • Removes muzzle flashes from pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, and slug turrets.

Can be activated mid-game, but note that all changes this mod makes to animated lights will be permanent for the current game. If deactivated mid-game, any changes made to lighting in levels you've visited with the mod active will not revert.

CUSTOMIZATION
There are two config variables in this script:
  • MIN_FLASH_TIME sets the minimum flashing light interval allowed before this mod will disable it. Defaults to 333 milliseconds (1/3 second).
  • PRESERVE_SOUNDS allows this mod to attempt to preserve animated lights that make a sound every time they change state (for example the flickering lights in the first level subway station). Due to technical limitations preventing the flashing of the model itself from being disabled, this is done by creating a non-animated duplicate of the animated light and hiding the original light. If you believe this is causing problems, or you just don't like the look of it, set this value to false.

Any changes made to customization variables will only be reflected in levels you haven't yet visited in your current game.
