For modern indie FPS I would strongly recommend Overload, Ashes: Afterglow, Everspace and Immortal Redneck. Two are 6dof shooters and two are roguelites so certainly not really the same flavor as build engine games. Well, except Ashes. It's a Doom engine game that feels like a build engine game, and really fine work for 0 budget effort.

No idea about Selaco. Will try it one day. Also looks technologically-advanced for a doom engine game but perhaps more in a way I don't like. More like those FPS games made in the 2000s. But no valid opinion until I try it.

Selaco is fine. It has some problems but the developers know about them so hopefully they will be fixed.

The main issue currently is that the palyers Slide ability has a cooldown that is a little too long.

I wouldn't say Selaco has a kitchen-sink design philosophy. Probably the only truly superfluous element of the game is Burger Flipper, but it's such a minor thing that it hardly matters. For the most part the systems play into each other.

Really enjoying it so far.

Selaco struck me as like the E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy of boomer shooters-- a game by a bunch of passionate developers who couldn't say no to ANY concept, so it ended up with this bloated kitchen-sink design that would be more appropriate to a slow-paced FPS like Deus Ex, but just feels distracting in what's presumably supposed to be a rip-and-tear type game.

I finally around to playing Selaco yesterday (I've been playing System Shock Remake on the Playstation 4 until now), and so far Selaco seems to be what we were all hoping for. A game designed to be fun, remember those? It's an 'old-school' first person shooter, where 'old-school' means only good things; i.e. it's 'old-school' as in fast but not too fast* good and enjoyable gunplay, you need to use a little brain-power to find your way to the objectives, the graphics are good (not AAA good, but it's an indie game, made with the GZDoom engine), and so far I really enjoyed it, so much so that I hated having to turn it off and go to bed, as I had to get up today for work (I am age 53 now, so now I think everyone should retire at 50).

I only played through the first couple of levels (I spent too much time looking for secrets, as I've heard that each level can have dozens of secrets, and I was hoping to find more powerful weapons hidden away), so it's possible the game could start to go really bad later on, but I really doubt it. This game just 'feels' right.

* I hate modern 'old-school' shooters that deliberately make the game almost too fast to play, so that you need Spider-Man's levels of agility and reflexes to get anywhere in the game. If any FPS from the 'classic' years (maybe 1993 to 2003) was actually that fast, then I don't remember playing it.

I've seen people complain that they didn't realise that this 'full' release would still be in early access (i.e. it's not the finished game). But the game does feel finished, or rather it doesn't feel like it's missing anything gameplay-wise. It's not at all like one of those early-access games where it's more like a proof of concept and the game mechanics don't feel right, or where the game feels short because most of the levels are yet to be added, or where there are obvious bugs that harm the game's playability or even soft-lock the game. I'm not sure what we are waiting on (new levels, weapons, abilities, etc), but to judge from the existing game, any new things the makers choose to add to it will probably be well thought out and well implemented, and will actually improve the game. So who's complaining?

Ashes 2063 and the expansion pack are really, really good, yes. I would say good enough to sell, but nowadays it's so easy to make a (bad) game that Steam etc are drowning in bad games that cost money to buy. But Ashes 2063 + Afterglow are must plays for old school first person shooter fans.

I don't know about the 'only modern "Build Engine" game worth playing', though. I don't follow any mod scenes at the moment, so I don't know, but surely there have been some mods/Total Conversions released in the past few years. If nothing else I'd suggest Duke Nukem: Alien Armageddon, though I don't know how long ago it first came out, so maybe you're not including it due to it's age or something.

The only modern "Build Engine" game worth playing is Ashes 2063 (and Afterglow). Technically it's a GZDoom mod, not a build engine game, but it very much looks and plays like a build-engine game and has a lot of the design considerations of build-engine games.

I highly recommend playing both.

Regarding other released or soon to be released games:

The sort of sequel to the brilliant Ion Fury, Phantom Fury was released a few weeks ago, and it's really divided the opinions of gamers, some people think it's a huge disappointment. Of the three first person shooter reviewers on Youtube that I watch, Civvie 11 refuses to even review it, because he found it so disappointing, and both GmanLives and Jarek the Gaming Dragon were very underwhelmed. Others find it OK, and some say it's really good, so it's not a total loss for everyone, at least.

Personally, I've only played the first couple of levels, on a mate's PC, and I found it to be uninteresting, and I've not felt the urge to continue with it, Mind you, maybe it does get better later on, and I might still buy it, especially if it's makers decide to improve the game significantly via patches. Or if I just hit another dry spot where no new games on the horizon attract me and I just want to buy something.

As for Alien Armageddon, yeah, that's a name I've heard mentioned around a lot. I have very little experience with Duke3D mods (so far I've only played the DNF 2013 campaign), so I'll probably start with some smaller vanilla mappacks. It's still something I'm likely to play sometime in the future, however.

By far the best DN3D mod I have played is Alien Armageddon, which includes three new single player campaigns, plus upgraded/improved versions of the four original DN3D episodes and expansion packs (Duke it out in D.C, and Life's a Bitch), you can now play as either Duke Nukem or two other characters (with their own weapons, upgrades, etc), and you play the game co-op with either a human or an A.I. controlled companion, and the mod adds new weapons, weapon upgrades, perks, interactive NPCs, new options, etc.

I don't really have any plans to buy that version of the game right about now as I'm happy enough with running the original game files on eDuke32. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind playing it at all...

Seeing as some of you seem to be fans of Build engine games, would you have any recommendations for a polished, mostly vanilla full-episode-length mappack for Duke3D? I'm thinking of something akin to Death Wish for Blood (a must play, BTW) or Arcane Dimensions for Quake - multiple levels, lots of polish and detail (I'm spoiled), but still within the confines of the vanilla game with at most just a very limited selection of additions (no TCs, basically). Single episodes are easy enough to find but for some reason I haven't been able to find any full episodes that tickled my fancy.

I'm torn between trying this, and waiting, too. To me, the past few years, and the foreseeable future aren'tt exactly brimming with games that appeal to me, so I am tempted to play this, rather than wait a year or two until it's finished.

On the subject of Duke Nukem, it turns out that prototypes for four (4!) different Duke Nukem games were leaked in 2022!


These are:

   
Duke Nukem Forever (1996)   - A 2D sidescroller, which was abandoned in favour of the first person shooter of the same name,

Duke Nukem: Endangered Species
- A cancelled PC first person shooter (see https://dukenukem.fandom.com/wiki/Duke_Nukem:_Endangered_Species for details)

Duke Nukem Forever (2001) - The one that fans are rebuilding, as shown in the video Voodoo has linked to, above.

Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded - The amazing fan-remake that tantalized us all, until (allegedly) Gearbox killed it around eleven years ago.

I can't post links, because of this forum's desire to stay totally legal, but they aren't hard to find.

Unfortunately, the released build of Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded is very disappointing, at least to me. It has no single player enemies, just some (not too bright) bots to play basic deathmatch against, though you do get to explore some of the single player campaign levels. And sadly, the graphics that looked great in 2011 now look much less impressive, as time and graphics have inevitably moved on.

An interesting point was made by someone on Youtube though. Apparently no company or person (be it Gearbox, 3D Realms, Randy Pitchford, etc) has complained about the leaks, or demanded that fans stay away from these files, which is unusual for leaks of this magnitude. Also, it's speculated that the same person might have leaked all of these files, and perhaps that that person is connected with Gearbox or 3D Realms or whoever, and is leaking these files with the permission of the owners of these files (Gearbox or 3D Realms), possibly (fingers crossed here :thumb:) because a new Duke Nukem game is in the works, and releasing these files (which would never be worth anything financially) would bring publicity and attention to the franchise/IP again.

I doubt it, but let's hope, eh?

Snap! I just came here to post about the newly released (released today) Duke Nukem Restoration First Slice 1.0 . This is the first release of a project to convert the released 2001 source code of Duke Nukem Forever to a full and final game...

I've seen this myself, even though I have yet to give it a try. It looks great, though. Who could have said that we might see the day when the community will recreate the DNF that could have been?

Whilst not build engine specifically, a month or so ago saw the release of "The Force Engine". This is a reverse engineered source port for Star Wars: Dark Forces...

I've been following this project myself for some time, it's great stuff. I've played Dark Forces for the first time only a year ago and it's already in my mind one of the most unique FPS of the mid '90s. To have it preserved in a proper source port is fantastic. As you've pointed out, some of the improvements are almost essential - I still remember how painful looking around and aiming was in the original.

I'm even more interested about future Outlaws support though, which is going to happen sometime in 2024. Outlaws is a game I'm more personally interested in, not being much of a SW fan, and I'm holding back from playing the original so as to have a smoother experience on a modern port.

And more. You can grab it here. Having completed a recent play through of the game via the source port, I quite like it. It MAJORLY improves the original, making the need for dosbox a thing of the past, and even just having proper mouse look was good enough, but to have the save system in there too, is just fantastic.

I've been meaning to try the Duke Nukem 3D mod Alien Armageddon (https://www.moddb.com/mods/duke-nukem-alien-armageddon) for a while now. By all accounts it's amazing, having not just new weapons and new levels, but also different playable characters, RPG elements, and even the standard four Duke Nukem 3D episodes with improvements and rescue-able characters.

Unfortunately, due to my ever diminishing free time, I've pretty much had to stop following the game modding scene. There must be some truly amazing mods now for games that I love, that I will never get to play  :(

It's a free eDuke32 total conversion that's apparently been in the works for over six years, developed by a team of long-time mappers. Four episodes have been completed so far, so length-wise it seems to be on par with the original Duke3D campaign. It also seems to keep being steadily updated. Kinda tempted to give it a go.

Yes, and from what I've read, every time George saw something new (or at least new to him) in a first person shooter that he had tried, he insisted that it be put in to DNF, thereby not only adding to the list of things to be contained in DNF, but also taking people away from their current tasks and forcing them to become involved in planning/programming/testing/whatever the new feature. There was never, if what I've read is true, even a remotely finalized list of what the finished game should be, at least not when George was involved in it. He was constantly changing what the end product should be.

So again I have to ask, why is the finished game (the one released in 2011) so generic and utterly lacking in great, even if second-hand, features or spectacle? Even if the 2011 game (the one that commercially released) had been released in 2001 (but still been the 2011 game), then it wouldn't exactly have been original or innovative.

iirc, the short story is that at one point they've decided to switch from Quake2 engine to Unreal (the game was nowhere near complete at that stage), and then in 2002 decided to switch to Unreal2 (game 80% finished, that's the leaked build), and that has messed up everything and all went to hell from that point on.

The development story of Duke Nukem Forever has been broadly told, but I would be fascinated to read a more detailed account. I would especially like to know if it's true (as seems to be reputedly the case) that it was solely George Broussard's bad decisions that caused the total restarts and the constant feature creep. Why didn't any of 3D Realms higher ups (or equals, I don't know the hierarchy of the company) say something like "You'd been making this game for five years now, enough is enough, we're giving you twelve months from today, we want it finished and ready for the discs to be pressed, one year from now"? Why did the company go silent, as regards trailer videos and
screenshots, after a few years, when originally they were happy to show the world what they were working on?

And how is that the finished game contains nothing innovative at all? It was so bland and unimaginative, so where were all the ideas and innovations that had supposedly caused the game to be delayed whilst these great new ideas were added and tested?

The Duke Nukem Forever 2001 build in question has now been leaked, genuinely! I don't think I can post links here as this subject might be a little too contentious, given that both Gearbox (who own the Duke Nukem IP) and 3D Realms still exist, but Google should help you find them. And they will probably be on the Internet Archive too.

as apparently you need to download and install a small file, to get the game working propely.

There are two leaked files, the game's archive being 847 MB in size, and the press kit being 47 MB (plus you should download the 3 MB file from the forums.duke4.net link given above). Though the 'press kit' is just fifteen screenshots, so it's probably not worth downloading unless you are an utter Duke Nukem fanatic who has to have everything DN that you can find.

not quite, as we never got a game based on those older builds - RE2 still is quite close to RE1.5, there are changes, but you definitely can see the games are closely related. DNF2011 is nothing like those old 1998/2001/2002 builds, iirc.

Someone is claiming to have a playable build of the 2001 version of Duke Nukem Forever, and will (he or she says) be releasing it for download in June.

"Almost every chapter is present in some form. A huge chunk is playable, a huge chunk is block-outs with no enemies. All of the E3 content is there.
