Playing human late game will often turn into a first person tower defense whereas playing alien is generally hoping you have the right mutation for the job.
My favorite part of tremulous was always mixing and matching various weapon and equipment types to make defending the base easier, one of the best balancing decisions i've seen the game have being that having a jetpack and a flamethrower can be certain death due to how easy it can be to ignite your own plasma trail, dealing self damage and bringing yourself straight to the ground.
My favorite map on the other hand was always transit, despite how hard it could be to find players on it. I loved the wide open nature of the map that just BEGGED for exploration. Going out on your own possibly to set up small "outposts" (something that's hard to do in most other maps) in various areas is challenging and awesome. Even going out with someone else wasn't always much help as you could still get ambushed from anywhere at any time. It was also probably the only map where if you got fed up of not being able to do much at the main base you could actually do something about it!
I don't have the best memories of Tremulous but it's not a bad game, just one that needs a bit of tweaking and a better playerbase.
If you're looking for this type of game it's basically Natural Selection Minus the RTS screen, which can end up having players put structures places out of necessity rather than because that's a good place to put it strategically.
(Okay I don't have the best grammar in the world which is generally what happens when I don't take time to write something.)
