Yeah A3D is the now defunct Aureal 3D sound system present in any Aureal Vortex 1 or 2 based sound card. Where as EAX is Creatives 3D offering. A3D isn't properly supported by any operating system after windows ME. There are hacks to make it work properly-ish on XP though. A3D was in my opinion slightly better sounding than EAX more depth to the sound but was more buggier than EAX.

No it's XP. I think the reason the a3d drivers don't work is because it's a creative card - it uses EAX, not a3d. Apparently, A3d and EAX are two different things. (I think?) I'm actually not sure about SS2, but thief and thief 2 EAX sound bad.

If you're running Vista or Win 7 you're gonna need Creative Labs Alchemy.

I can't even get this thing to work. It doesn't matter what tricks i try, this fix simply doesn't work. I've always been able to enable hardware acceleration and turn eax on (no problem there) but it always has sounded echo-ey and horrible.

This fix is also part of the SS2Tool now.

You only need files a3d.dll and a3dapi.dll from that archive. Place those files to your shock installation directory.
Then you should have working hardware acceleration and you can enable EAX, too.

You can only set EAX and Hardware Acceleration options before you start a game or load a savegame.
If it still doesn't work, these should be the drivers you need.

Well I finally get my sound blaster X-FI Fatality.
But I can't on the EAX option because I can't enable Hardware...(A3D).
Do I need any driver for A3D or System Shock 2 just don't recognice my sound card...
