Thought it would be nice to have a topic about music that hits you at the right moment in time by having something you can't grasp at first. Discovering something about you, your thoughts or the world. (While not "great when you're high" because that's boring and average)
Tried to describe my impressions but put them into spoilers because music should not be listended to with a mindset.

Crumb - Locket
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqnG_Ei35JE
Interesting how the low fi sound develops into...as whatever this could be defined. Nice weird video.

Crumb - Bones
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD3iG6m44g8
the saxophone part somehow got to me

French 79 - Hometown
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAv5pLO37mE
First time watching I got teary eyed. Maybe it due to the weeklong isolation or my sometimes emerging angst (about everything). I guess what really struck a chord with me is how these four people experienced something personal and inspiring. The video has short film quality and helps to convey a lot of that for me. And the deep synthesizer tones are kind of sad but also uplifting at the same time. Without the video it does not carry the same "heaviness" for me and I'm a bit dissappointed that, when you focus on the music alone, there are some percussion elements in there that give it a rather fabricated sound. Wish they had relied more on the sythesizer and less on cheesy piano backup.

Beachhouse - Space song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBtlPT23PTM
I'm in it for 1:45 to be honest. The lyrics, while nice, are beginning to fall out of my favour
More views on a unofficial version with scenes from 2oo1 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9X1C7pTu-M ), but I'm not willing to accept anything else then the original soundtrack to go with these images.

Now please post something cool  :)
6741ebb3b75b7
My music taste is probably too pop for ya, but I see that you have put effort into posting your more accessible faves, so I'll try.  :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_SYDA-jVPg
Since you're asking about music that changed me, I'd have to post a lot of Jonathan Richman. He's been accompanying guiding me since my youth.
If you find his Bandcamp page they'll inform you, that it isn't really his, because:
JONATHAN RICHMAN DOES NOT USE THE INTERNET. ALL EMAILS WILL BE SENT TO BLUE ARROW RECORDS, HIS LABEL.
And my only thought about that was: Of course he doesn't, he's not crazy.

Laura Marling - My Manic and I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djChY6Ol9ig

I was reminded of Marling this morning because I heard in a podcast that she released her new album early. And I thought of this song which I liked a lot back then. It's about the impossibility of living with a mentally ill (and very religious) person.

I like how Space Song gives a completely different meaning/atmosphere to the 2001 footage.
You probably already know that Kubrick had originally commissioned a symphonic soundtrack for the film, but then didn't like it and went with the pop classics we all know. A bit like the Eurythmics 1984 album.

That French 79 video is pretty good, I get what you mean.

Oh! Also Starfucker released a new album today: Future Past Life
Since Being no one, going nowhere they've risen to be one of my most favourite bands.

Also (I hasten to add) The Strokes have a new album out, after 7 years: The New Abnormal
Listen to Julian Casablancas slur his speech here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fbZTnZDvPA

6741ebb3b8625
Hige Driver - Ukigumo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLqkYqGNcZc
For some reason, this one is extremely moving, probably similar to what atropos felt with his French 79 song, despite its simplicity. While there are a few musical pieces that had a similar effect on me when I listened to them the first few times, only a handful are this potent, and Ukigumo is one of only two to have kept it to this day.

Brings - Liebe gewinnt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjV-St5TYMs
It's in German, if you are interested in the lyrics, there is a partial translation here, and since I would have to register to complete it, it will stay that way for the time being.
Here, it's the key change at the end of the chorus (for the first time at 1:00) that gets me. Liberating, somehow, which is probably what they were going for anyway.

The Kelly Family - Fell In Love With An Alien
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpgDJDdeHos
Honestly, no idea what is going on here, it seems deeply nostalgic despite me having first heard it in 2017. Kelly Family is really not my jazz otherwise.

Metal beyond this point, you have been warned. No excessive screaming, though.

Nightwish - The Greatest Show on Earth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgTUGYDGIgA
Yes, its 24:00. I would advise to either hear it in full or not at all, skipping through really doesn't do this one justice. There is also an interpretative fanmade music video, if that tickles your fancy.
This one is the second piece to have kept the thrill I mentioned in the Ukigumo spoiler. While it would probably qualify as "great when you're high" it would be a shame to disregard it only on the basis of that. I wouldn't know about that high thing either way, apparently being a chemist makes you quite insensitive to many of the little toxins people use to escape reality. Anyhow, a brief history of life in just under half an hour, neat, eh?

Orden Ogan - Finis Coronat Opus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POouCe9n11U
(Not related to a certain virus at all, it's just Latin. Unless...)
This song has been my personal version of those cheesy "Hang in there" motivational posters during a somewhat rough time. Please don't read too much into what that says about my personality.

Sonata Arctica - Gravenimage
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFitMFnVcog
Another one with a weirdly touching key change, at 3:30 and again at 3:50, further amplified by the many triplets stacked on top of each other. While most of the other pieces were soothing in one way or another, there is some energy here to get up and get shit done. Everyone needs that at some point.

Temperance - The Last Hope in a World of Hopes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6l25ATPy-E
It really gives hope, another candidate for those darker times.

Theocracy - Mirror of Souls
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsrfP9U6wyw
Another long one, and no fanmade video this time.
You could probably fill an entire artistic analysis paper with all the implications and pictures used in this song alone. While not as profound as the masterworks Nightwish tend to produce, I can still see some greatness here.

I could probably dig up a few more, if anyone is particularly interested.

I'm not sure how much this is going to appeal to everyone, or if this is what you mean by "peculiar", but I've been absolutely obsessed with the last couple of Daughters records lately. I've never heard music that can be sound both face-meltingly evil and catchy at the same time.

Daughters - Self Titled
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex8OnP0wcVY

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnGsWLtmyVM

The last few Swans albums have been fantastic too, though again I'm not sure how appealing everyone else will find it.

Any Faith No More fans should also go down the rabbit hole that is Mike Patton's non-FNM output. Tomohawk is a particular favorite of mine.

Tomahawk - God Hates a Coward

6741ebb3b8c00
Well that was peculiar.

In other news I pre-ordered the new Strokes album from the shop linked on their homepage. It was supposed to be delivered yesterday.
I asked them about it and got this reply:

Quote by Sam + Bravado Customer Care:
Unfortunately, there's been a delay in receiving inventory of an item in your order and we're currently working on obtaining an updated shipping estimate for you.

Quote by Kolya:
It's a digital music album.  What does "a delay in receiving inventory of an item" even mean in that context?

 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Von Squarepusher angepinnt

Warp Records:

‘Detroit People Mover’ is a stark contrast to the swarming energy of ‘Terminal Slam’ – shot just three months ago at Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, the busiest crossing in the world. Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher) notes that the two videos “articulate salient points about our urban environments - Terminal Slam about the prevalence of advertising and possibilities for its subversion, and DPM regarding our zombie cities that despite the lack of everyday human contact continue marching on”

Very interesting video and concept.

Speaking of Detroit I saw the docu Standing in the Shadows of Motown a while ago in which they revisit the original musicians of many hits of that time and place. And eventually bring them together for a little concert.
Now the song Heatwave by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas was already in my heart, but the rendition from that concert with Joan Osborne on the mic is something to behold.

I got something @unn_atropos might actually like. The Jam - That's Entertainment.
The Jam was Paul Weller's early punkrock vehicle. The song is about the tristesse of everday life, particuarly how it feels when getting home at 5 in the morning hungover.

In my defence, the thread suffers from vaguely defined terms and limits.
Also somebody posted The Kelly Family and Nightwish before and yet you chose to single me out.

Why do you hate my freedom?

I like Threats by SAULT and have to check their other stuff out.

Apart from a few exceptions, I'm not a fan of most of Danzig's own music but his voice is pretty damn good and quite similar to that of Elvis and Jim Morrison (Edit: apparently that's also the official blurper on their bandcamp-page), which makes his covers very enjoyable for me too.

Squarepusher - Detroit People Mover
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBbQWgoJHOM

The new album is really great. Squarepusher is one of my main inspirations together with Kraftwerk and Aphex Twin when doing music.

I guess i've always been into "peculiar" music more than pop, rock and other types of mainstream music which i've never really cared for, perhaps apart from Pink Floyd and Doors which i listened to for a while (psychedelics period in my 20's, doing LSD and shrooms). As a kid i was very into Industrial / Noise - SPK, Einstürzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle and i also loved electronic music like Krafwerk and the whole EBM scene (Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Skinny Puppy).

Here are some good ones i enjoy these days;

In my defence, the thread suffers from vaguely defined terms and limits.
Did not want to limit anyone, sorry.  :( But maybe I was too much in my own baggaged head. Becoming soft and emotional with age. Not weirder, because I've been like this from the beginning.  :awesome:
I'll think about a new defintion.

And sorry for creating this thread and then not activley participating. I kept pushing stuff off.
But I listeded to almost anything ya'll posted. Thank you for that. I mean it!

Took some notes (just dumb thoughts for the most part 😅) and released them below.

@Kolya
- Jonathan Richman
I liked my first impression went from "Okay, comedy music...." to "He's cheeky and got something to tell"

- Laura Marling - My Manic and I
It's nice how this is not just a song, but rather a story which could be the basis for more.
Also listened to her song "What He Wrote" with her cigarette woman dark timbre voice (which seems to be a thing with me with women. The timbre voice I mean, not necessarily the cigarettes^^).

- Starfucker - Future Past Life
Never heared of them up to now, but why do it get the feeling that I have known them forever!??

- Joan Osborn
Why don't I have the Soundtrack for "Sister Act" on CD/as mp3. The tape won't do at the moment. -_-

- The Jam - That's Entertainment
So, this is punkrock??!?
Thank you. I like it very much! Reminds me of Paul Haigs - Let's face the music and dance

Will fawn over Hazel O'Conner later...

@fox
- Lisa Gerrard - Seven Seas
Nice photography, like a weird mix of "The Lighthouse" and some old Davidoff cool Water commercial.
Maybe you would enjoy Wermut - Anna?

- Forest Swords - Panic
Intruiging.
All the ropes and stings and faceless bodys make it feel urgent.
A narrative video (bordering on artsy). Turns out I knew the band from the video Crow

- Sevdaliza - Human
slow, foggy, sizzling and organic. Like the organ/Hammond background sound.
Do you happen to listen to FKA Twigs? I know 1 or songs and this seems to be in the same ballpark

Marina Satti - ΜΑΝΤΙΣΣΑ
Don't know anything about greek music besides "Alive She Died" (Their cover of Joy Divisions "She lost control" is excellent!)
and Human Puppets.*
Do you have a connection to the country or did you find the music by another way?

*I think, later I will write something about  "She's Leaving"

- All Them Witches - Diamond
Is that your "escape hatch" from metall? Leading back to more metall? Please excuse my lack of genre knowledge.

- Squarepusher - Detroit People Mover
This!!! Fucking got me!
Will write more later...

@icemann
You just sent me back to 1999/2000. Somehow. Your selection is like watching MTV on a slightly tilted afternoon.

- Bjork - Human Behavior
Have to admit that I'm not so familiar with "Debut" and and have a stronger connection to "Homogenic".
@everyone: Im curious what's your favourite Björk song?

- Jax Jones - House Work
Damn, are the girls at 0:43 cute or whaaaatttttt!!!

- Julian Lennon - Now Your in Heaven
OMG. This. Sorry. That's just creppy!

@Vegoraptor
Hige Driver - Ukigumo
Yeah! I Agree! It's upbeat, exhausting, fun and (somehow) melancholic at the same time. This basic music is strucking 1 or more cords.

- Nightwish - The Greatest Show on Earth
Heeding your advice. Will come back to it.

I once saw their video for "Sleeping Sun" around 2005 and I was a bit moved, because the fighting knights have something sadly touching. How they have fallen so out of time. How their world and believes seem so small in retrospect.

- Lisa Gerrard - Seven Seas
Nice photography, like a weird mix of "The Lighthouse" and some old Davidoff cool Water commercial.
Maybe you would enjoy Wermut - Anna?
I will give it a try, thanks! Lisa Gerrard is one half of the relatively well known duo Dead Can Dance (which is a prime example of "peculiar music" itself, live as well).

Dead Can Dance - ACT II: The Invocation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjm5o0ZxLyg

- Sevdaliza - Human
slow, foggy, sizzling and organic. Like the organ/Hammond background sound.
Do you happen to listen to FKA Twigs? I know 1 or songs and this seems to be in the same ballpark
I know the name but haven't actively listened to her music yet. From what I can tell so far, they are in the same ballpark and I will investigate further. Sevdaliza is by no means a "one-hit-wonder", btw. Exploring her discography is definitely worth it.

None, besides having a few friends of greek origin. I stumbled upon Marina Satti by chance and was intrigued by the sound. Just like I don't understand any of the turkish lyrics of She Past Away or the fantasy language of Dead Can Dance and still get a lot out of it. Maybe even more, who knows...
- All Them Witches - Diamond
Is that your "escape hatch" from metall? Leading back to more metall? Please excuse my lack of genre knowledge.
Not really needing an escape hatch from metal but it makes for a nice transistion between different styles. This song really has so many lovely elements of different genres all across the board (Indie Pop/Rock/Blues/Metal).

- Squarepusher - Detroit People Mover
This!!! Fucking got me!
Will write more later...

Excellent!
