Well, you just need a couple of talented people, alot of time and you can make it.
Just take a look at Black Mesa.
It's not out of the possible.
I always thought it was strange how Black Mesa always had such a huge staff of basically professionals working on it, not explicitly saying they're in cahoots with Valve, and it did take them a long-ass time to finish the project, but still strange.

Strange how? Half-Life is one of the most singularly popular PC games ever created. If there's a game that can attract scads of top-level modding talent for a complete remake, it's gonna be Half-Life.

That's true, even so the project stands out monolithically when you compare it with any similar efforts, and I don't see that changing anytime soon either.

Is that an excuse to charge for something that was free from the beginning?
6742495ac34f6
I was there when Black Mesa was just in the beginning. And to be honest, except some (about 2~3 people) there were just people of average skill.
When it comes to modding it's more about dedication than actual skill. You will learn alot of stuff along the
way and improve through the course.
Everyone who is really skilled will be headhunted sooner or later.

Nonsense, skill (and perspective on design) very much matters.

Except how to spell "a lot" in your case ;)

...OK, that was petty of me.

The best-known graphical upgrade mod for System Shock 2 is run by someone with no artistic talent whatsoever. Go figure.

I have no idea what you mean by that.
6742495ac3cf9
It's popularity is probably in part due to it featuring Midwife boobs. Makes it a hot topic (pun intended).

I wouldn't say Rebirth's author had absolutely no artistic talent at all though, that's going a little too far.

Eh, I think ZB was talking about shtup...
6742495ac4183
Shhh you :headshot:

Yes, it seems he perhaps was talking about shtup/himself.
I don't see how his post was very relevant in that case. We were discussing skill/dedication/perspective on design and their importance in modding. Shtup took skill to make, did it not? As ZB says "we are not a community who responds saying 'yay, you made a thing'". Shtup is a good mod firstly because it took skill to make, and secondly because of ZB's perspective on design; that these better models should be true to SS2's original style.
He can be as dedicated as he wants but without that perspective we would have had rebirth: objects edition.

A person would have to be pretty dim to think I was talking about Rebirth, since its creator was obviously very artistically talented.
6742495ac443d
Yes, I am as thick as bricks, you've only just noticed? You must be rather dim to have only just caught on. <- see, I can make baseless insults too.

It depends on your intended use of the word "artistic", your use of it was ambiguous.

Did you not consider that I thought you were just being a dick when you made that post (which wouldn't be uncommon now would it)?
I thought you were intentionally exaggerating to spite Rebirth, hence why I said "I wouldn't go that far".

shtup, ZB.

I wasn't talking about what would be good to have, or would make it easier for you.
I was talking about what really matters.
You can be a god in something, but when you don't have the dedication to actually make a mod you will never really get to anything.

anyone know if I'd need to start a new game upgrading from AODB 0.3 to SCP when its released?

Yes, absolutely. Trying to load an ADaoB save on SCP will break many, many things. Gamesys mods in general do not mix, especially so when there are many changes to the levels themselves.

6742495ac50b8
I think you could get away with mid-game upgrading without major (read: game-breaking) issues, but minor ones are sure to pop up here and there. generally, not recommended unless there is absolutely no other option.

Will SCP fix screens and such like ADaoB, or will there be a stand-alone for SHEMP? Or will SHEMP become a part of SHTUP?

Will it happen before or after SCP release?

lets hope for a simultaneous release.
