Anyone played the Russian Overkill mod for Doom? That's unbalanced as all hell...

Brutal Doom baby. It's not often when gameplay mods get a ton of attention, hey, take out the gore and silly fatalities it'd probably have not got very far. It's mind sex for the gameplay though (AI, weaponry, new player-controlled actions, and general minor touches). Slaying demons has never been more intense than in Brutal Doom.

And of course BD is balanced nicely.

Brutal Doom ruined Doom. Looks like Doom 4's gonna be something like it.
And of course, linking isn't working, so here:

First they ruined Duke Nukem, then Rise of The Triad, then Shadow Warrior, and now Doom.

No, Doom 3 ruined Doom.

Brutal Doom ruined Doom.

:D A mod that added great gameplay depth and new challenges to a once redundant game. It revived it. Original Doom bored me after playing for extended periods of time even back in the day, Brutal Doom keeps me hooked.

Just how exactly did it ruin it? By allowing me much greater control over doom guy? by forcing aim assist off? By making the weapons all balanced and responsive, visceral? By making the AI put up a fight? By enhancing numerous effects?

It's one of my favourite mods of all time, because gameplay.

ohh, no duck and recover? now I'm interested. also, I like the "lets make it a brutal, fun game about killing demons" approach - this is what classic Doom was all about, at least for me, just a fun, brutal slaughter of everything that wasn't you. never considered it scary - while SS2 was "they have just killed me, I'm scared, better run next time", Doom was more like "they have just killed me, now I'm mad, gotta use a better gun next time". when I play Doom, I just want to blow demons into chunky giblets with my rocket launcher, not follow some story, of god forbid, read logs - that's where Doom3 went wrong.

Doom 3 strikes me as ID suddenly wanting to make thought-provoking experiences like LGS, or something  :what:
It's like half SS2, half Doom, and fails to excel in either styles.

It's not bad though. I played it from start to finish...twice even I think, or was that the expansion with the lovely super shotgun.

IMHO the biggest mistake they made with Doom 3 was one bad design decision which probably went on something like this.
"OK, we gonna make this a really scary game!" - "But our game isn't scary at all" - "Well.... Just make everything fucking dark, that's scary as hell!"

The PS1 port of Doom 1 was scarier than Doom 3. They changed the music and some of the SFX with a scary approach and made some lighting changes. Worked quite nicely and was still Doom.

Doom 3 only felt the slightest bit scary in the pitch black areas that required the flashlight...but that's not how Doom is meant to be played.

it's not a bad game, but as far as I'm concerned, it made the mistake of trying to be scary, and failing. it also lacked the fast, satisfying action of the classic games. and if you are not scared, and not shooting things all the time, you can get bored easily - sometimes I was so bored that I was just going around clubbing zombies with the flashlight.

also yeah, wasn't a fan of "lets make everything dark as hell" either - again, not scary, just annoying.

It's biggest mistake, a common one with all modern FPS also, was the level design. No platforming, no tricks and traps, no puzzles, no openness, no verticality. Still had the occasional secret area at least.

It's level design is a little like SS2's, intends to be realistic and coherent, but SS2 gets away with it because of great levels of interactivity and everything else that makes it great. SS2 still tried to feature platforming on occasion also, and despite being a series of corridors is still fairly open. Also has the occasional puzzle too (though too few unfortunately).

Doom 3 was just all-round fail, yet playable because no regen health and such.

Where the first presentation focused heavily on Doom's new vision for run-and-gun combat, the second slowed things down for a bit. We had a look at some of the new maneuverability in an area that appeared to be the outer portions of the UAC facility, with dirty clouds scudding through the dark, airless Martian atmosphere. Here we learn that the marine can double jump to reach higher ledges. Using this move, which appeared to be powered by a thruster of some sort, he quickly navigated a series of broken staircases. The functionality looked fluid, and a slightly mistimed jump was forgiven by the marine grabbing the staircase ledge and pulling himself up. There's certainly potential here for exploration, but both areas we saw were linear and there didn't appear to be much room for veering off of the beaten path.

Double jump and mantling. Platforming. Interesting, I don't believe this is a modern shooter.

After a few jumps, the marine reached a ravine. Serafin stopped dead in his tracks and switched over to the weapon wheel (slowing down game time to a crawl), to equip the chainsaw.

The crowd went berserk just seeing the chainsaw icon.

fucking weapon wheels  Yep, is a modern shooter.

The demo quickly turned into a slaughter with demons getting shot up and then torn to shreds. Skulls were crushed, jaws were ripped in half, heads stomped from above, arms completely torn off, necks snapped, bodies kicked over railings, and in one memorable case, a heart ripped out of a giant demon's chest and punched down its own throat, where it then exploded.

Fatality faggotry. the thing with Brutal Doom is you never even have to witness one as they are entirely player activated and don't conflict with the standard mechanics. It better be the same for D4.
Still, if the fatalities are in First Person, which it sounds like they may be, I may possibly appreciate the occasional bit of brutality.

Uh, all the several hundred other things SCP fixes and/or improves?  :/

*poke*

Not sure why I am speculating on this though, I guess I just missed you Drone-Drag  :happyjoy:
I'm under the illusion that I am bored is why. I have plenty to do!

I'm not around enough to be missed, I'm around for a while then gone for like a year :P .

There are no women here. It's just us, men that I think are women like you Drone-Dragon honeybunz, and SHODAN.

It r fixed naow. XD

I couldn't help myself...it was like a big red gem being held by a scary animal statue saying "Touch me and die." :ninja:

also, let me repeat - the weapon fixup/overhaul/rebalance or whatever you want to call it that was inherited from ADaoB will be thoroughly inspected for SCP beta2, but this needs to be done very carefully, as it's one big jenga tower, you pull some pieces wrong and down it goes.

Well, I suppose that is something at least. I was just hoping from what we had all been talking about, and from things I had gathered from you and Zylon that this was already going to be a part of the initial release. Not really what I was hoping for but, maybe it will work out eventually. :)

I agree. It's taken me two years to "balance" Deus Ex, and there's still a few nagging things to sort.
For the original developers of games featuring great complexity it's likely impossible to achieve balance first try. I think the most impressive work in this regard has to be Dark Souls, though it probably isn't quite on DX or SS2's level in terms of complexity, but regardless they did a great job with balancing all systems.

Well to be fair, you didn't just 'balance' Deus Ex...you tore its guts out and gave it new internal organs. Still, you seem to have hit more than miss. :hacker:

Hmm, there was something on page 45 I was going to comment on...but I forgot O_o .

No. The game is heavily modified but it's guts remain, it's still the same old Deus Ex. The reviews reflect this. I wouldn't dare touch all the stuff that actually worked, which was the vast majority of it.

It r fixed naow. XD

Oh yes, how can I forget. You little bitch  :awesome:

What are you rambling about (again). This fucking circus of a thread has discussions on a large number of shooters. Only ~2 people in it's lifetime have complained about all the off topic antics. It's good publicity for vooBane as everyone arguing here keeps SCP fresh on display. when SCP is in need of discussion it gets it, in the meantime this has somehow become our Watering Hole, and you need to stop making nonsensical posts before another catfight begins.
