Who says that the patches are what we see in the game. Maybe those are just the disposable containers in which patches are stored :)

Maybe they are nano dogs that run down to medical and retrieve the actual thing for you when you need it.
But given that most other stuff looks like the actual thing, they're probably not.

Nano dogs... or nano rats. That's a cool concept.

Oh come on now, as if a storage container is even in the same universe of far-fetchedness.

A patch in the future could be something more complex than something like a dumb nicotine patch. http://www.x2biosystems.com/x2_x_patch/ (I bet they store those in some container/packaging :P)

SS2's cigarettes aren't more complicated. Today you would probably scatter ecigs on some desks. But in 1999 no one would have been able to tell what the hell that thing is.
The point is: a container is fine if it's recognisable. Otherwise you'd just have boxes of varies sizes lying around that you'd have to read to tell what it is. But that's just too slow for a game. That's why we have giant needles lying about unpackaged.
Saying it might be the packaging of the derm patch solves the problem logically but not in terms of gameplay.

SS1 clearly says that they are dermal patches, so there's next to no doubt that they are exactly that - patches that one slaps onto their skin. anyone viewing them as cans was simply misinterpreting things - just like when I was thinking that the white things on the humanoid mutant's face were its eyebrows. as funny as it may sound, didn't realize that they were supposed to be eyes until I've loaded the SS1 mutant SS2 mod couple of years ago.

Yes that's what a patch looks like.  However, i wouldn't exaggerate the reservoir too much because these drugs take effect instantly and last for mere seconds.  No human's skin can soak up 10 grams of drugs in 60 seconds.  Just make them flat rectangles with a slightly raised center, similar to how Josiah's inviso mutant looks, but rectangular edges.

They really need to PATCH the game and make them look like that.
Like people said, the patches would be stored in a container of some kind to keep them fresh. So they would be more bulky until you open 'em up and apply them. Kinda like a band-aid. So maybe they just look fat like that while they're packaged up?
It would be cool if the dermal patches stuck on your character model for as long as they last, so any drug-addicted hacker would look down and see themselves covered in them.

So far you don't even have a body...

I pictured it as a container for a rolled up patch.  Perhaps a flattened bandaid approach is better.  Still has thickness, but is now sensibly a patch.  What do you think?  Too fat?  Too flat?

Peel apart at the tan tab to unfold the patch (folded in half).  Apply to any available skin surface.  Do not wear longer than 4 hours as rash may occur.  Overdoses may occur if recipient bites, chews, or otherwise directly ingests contents of the patch.  Do not give adult patches to children.  Avoid harmful combinations with other patches  :sly:

I hadn't done a commit in 3 days...thought I'd share my latest commit description since it's a lot of progress:

Added needle ammo.  Added audiolog inventory.  Added audio log table of contents.  Simplified UI masking code for buttons and general UI.  Added custom double clicking functionality to all buttons if activated.  Textured navunit.  Added pipe.  Added thinner patch variant model.  Added custom index type for objects to allow for referencing other lists when placing into inventory such as audiologs.  Combined all object use scripts into one script.  Added small colored lights to prop_console01 and prop_cyberport.  Fixed broken links between cameras and prefab.

The audio log sub-tables for each level still need to be created, but it's coming together.  My global constants variables list is getting big too.  All useable objects reference these arrays for their data using one master index (e.g. 6 references audiolog prefab, audiolog frobicon, audiolog icon, etc. and 0 references paperwad prefab, paperwad frobicon, etc.):
useableItems
useableItemsFrobIcons
useableItemsIcons
useableItemsNameText
searchItemIconSprites
audiologNames
audioLogs
audioLogHasAudio
audioLogSpeech2Text

On an unrelated note, what is your opinion of releasing a demo of the same area that Night Dive did?

I don't think just flattening will do, you also need to basically shave off the "bottom" side so it would be flat and slappable to skin.

Not if you basically use it as a sort of disposable wristband-patch.

they are not wristbands, they are not cans, and they are definitely not eyebrows. they are dermal patches - no idea which part of this is hard to understand.

And I don't unterstand why you have such a hard time grasping the concept of a dermal patch which is packaged in a rolled up fashion just like a bandage is.  :/

Beautiful. :D

I already explained why such a package - even if it's realistic - doesn't provide recognisability and therefore sucks for gameplay.
It could just as well be a pack of condoms. Flavour: Saturnine Fantasy.

Not enough that it would even stand out as a hotly discussed topic in this forum.

Just attaching a .3ds file somewhat limits who can actually look at and comment on what you made. :)

Indubitably my dear Kolya.

With textures on it, it makes as good a patch as any.  There's not much to 3D'ify in the first place.  Anybody who's used Nicoderm, knows it's just a piece of tape, if that.

However, if there's a strong need for something more extravagant, I will volunteer to model it.
