And it was so dark in lighting you couldn't even watch two thirds of the movie. Literally. I've noticed a small handful of crappy modern films do that. Budgeting I guess, couldn't afford/didn't want to spend much on CGI so they hide the action in darkness.

Mind you, I don't see the need for remaking a movie even if it's sixty years old. It'd be like rewriting Wuthering Heights, To Kill a Mockingbird, or Hamlet.

Actually The Thing (original) was okay, and I liked the idea and the book of the the Body Snatchers. The films of The Fly and The Invasion of the body snatchers were simply not of my taste, neither the originals, nor most of the new ones (body snatchers has a lot of reboots, I only liked "The Faculty", and the parody "The worlds end").

The Fly was one of the few movies that made me barf (particularly the end scene).  That and watching a sweaty Jeff bang for hours on some crusty couch.

To be technical, John Carpenter's "remake" of The Thing storyline wise, is more of a sequel than a remake, much like the 2011 movie also called "The Thing".

They go in this sort of order:

1. The Thing From Another World (1951) - The Thing (2011) - The end of this one is the start of the 1982 movie
2. The Thing (1982)

Now I put the 1951 movie and the 2011 movies on the same line as they both occupy roughly the same spot timeline wise, though they are completely different movies to each other. Really just the 2011 and 1982 are directly related, with the 1982 movie being far more of a sequel.

If you've watched the films you'll get what I'm on about :p.

The 1982 film also features a photo found which comes from a scene in the 1951 movie apparently, which makes it all the more confusing.

Now be of note that I've only watched the 1981 and 2011 films so far. The Thing From Another World is on my todo list.

I've never seen the originals of either of those. The 1970s Invasion of The Body Snatchers was a remake if I remember right? That movie is excellent. There was another remake in the 90s which was descent. Different tone to the 70s one (and the humans win in that one).

The Fly - Only seen the remake. That was very good
The Faculty - Excellent movie . So many Sci-FI TV shows have copied this one. Farscape, Star Trek, The X-Files etc etc.

Some other good horror movie remakes:

* Friday The 13th (2009) - Being a HUGE fan of the original 10 Friday The 13th films, I prejudged this one and so hated it on sight and refused to see it at the cinema. Then happened across it on Pay TV and absolutely loved it. Big surprise.
* The Blob (1988)
* The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - Got a pretty good prequel movie a few years later also.

To be actually technical, John Carpenter's The Thing is a more faithful adaptation of the original novella. It has no connection to any previous films.

I prefer the Pingu one as a more humorous and original approach. The author of that has made many more brilliant claymations, I recommend you check them out.

Yeah, thought there may be some bias in there .
Personally I'm not fond of either, making me the more appropriate judge of the parodies

But seriously, the gf made me watch Frozen a few years back/whenever it was all the rage, but I don't remember much of pingu, so I'm not the best judge. I just know I never was fond of both, even if they each have qualities that should be acknowledged.

I don't want to dissect these videos but yes, I have a little nostalgia for the old Pingu episodes so the setting seems way funnier for me. Plus, the video actually tells the whole story of the movie and the video perfectly captures Pingu's claymation style whereas Frozen, of course, is originally CGI.

I'll forever wonder what happened after the final scene in "The Thing" (1982).

Besides the huge alien that Russel blew up, there was at least one of the human doppelganger's left, so my bet is that he was killed/absorbed not longer after. Though he did blow the whole place up if I remember right. So you never know.

If I recall the relatively recent sequel intended to address that, but the overwhelming consensus is it is shit so whatever.

Although you like Unfriended, Blair Witch Project and other such horror "classics", so feel free to ignore

The recent one was a prequel, set prior to the 1982 film :p. The last few minutes of it are the start of the 1982 movie.

And shh those are good flicks :p. I thought the prequel was half half. I'll have to watch it again at some point to give a proper opinion as I only remember bits of it. It deviated from the 82 flick a bit, in that if a person had metal in their body somewhere, then the alien would have issues duplicating that bit.

The prequel/remake/whatever is a piece of rubbish with none of the suspense, characterisation, and visceral gore of the 1982 version. It's a garbage CGI schlock shock gorefest with poorly mimicked scenes and settings from the Carpenter film. Because the authors intensely want to show off their talent to their fans, and explore all the thousand different ways you can make human bodies mutate or come apart with CGI, the monster is on constant display throughout the film's length. The filmmakers were cleraly alien to the concept of 'less is more'; the monster is supposed to evoke a fear of the unknown, and here the film lets us see and know it all of the time, barely leaving time for suspense. Not that the monster could be scary even with better editing, given how ridiculously plastic the over-the-top CGI looks. All of this makes the atmosphere neither scary nor suspenseful. Finally, even if the monster itself was done well, the characters are so poor that I don't even feel scared for them - I actually want to see them die.

The biggest thing for me from the 82 flick was the paranoia factor more than anything else. The paranoia of not knowing absolutely who was friend and who was an alien doppelganger. Absolutely love that aspect in the 82 flick.
