is it really so difficult to get the aspect ratio right, I wonder.

Surprisingly, yes.
I have a 16:10 monitor and, as you might know, Youtube requires 16:9. However, System Shock dislikes my resolution (1680x1050) or something, so all 16:9 options either crash my game or are actually 4:3 (is such a thing even possible? sadly, it is...). In turn, the 4:3 options are displayed in 16:10 (in this case 1280x960), which is the best i could come up with so far. The results are that the actual game is not stretched at all and the recording just slightly, you being the first one to even notice (or mention it, that is).

there is a helpdesk section on this forum you know. 'nyway, reprocessing the video before uploading to youtube shouldn't be hard. I mean, if I can do it, anyone can.

Yeah, I messed with the AR of my videos a while ago, and then someone asked me to stop since that causes pillarboxing. Humans, why are you so hard to please.  :/
Again, nobody told me that was an issue before so I never considered getting help, but ok, Helpdesk it is.
