These are several tools to get SS1 running on winXP
This thread is a work in progress. For any questions please refer here:

I came across an file extractor for the game files but unfortunately I've forgotten where I got it from or who wrote it.

Editing tools for SS1

- Tnxi021.zip is a RES file extractor
- Ripper V5.00  is a versatile file search, extraction and conversion tool
- ss-specs.txt: The unofficial System Shock file format specifications as extrapolated by the System Shock Hack Project
- ss1sound.zip: extracts e-mails, logs, and announcements (also from TSSHP)
- texture_extractor.zip: Another texture extractor
- DumpTex.zip: Another texture extractor
- coc042b.zip: A texture editing Tool that can convert any true color image to a 256-color indexed image using a given palette
- FlightUnlimited_RES_FileViewer_v1.32.zip: Also works on SS RES files

Toxic Frog's System Shock Modding Tools
(As discussed on TTLG)

Quote by Toxic Frog:
For a while now I've been working on a set of SS1 modding tools, including a map editor. Most of it's not done yet, but the gamesys editor (or rather, the OBJPROP.DAT editor, which seems to serve much the same purpose in SS1 as SHOCK2.GAM in SS2) is, lacking only support for the stuff that hasn't been reverse engineered yet (doors, animations, triggers, containers and critters) -- and I intend to add limited support for those (the common object properties) over the next few days.

It's written almost entirely in Lua, using lbitlib (C) for bitwise operations and libFOX-1.4 + libfxlua (C++) for the GUI.

Using it is fairly self-explanatory, although I would advise backing up your OBJPROP.DAT first, in case there's a bug somewhere I've missed. The program has been combined into a single archive which supports both OSs, available in both RAR and TAR.GZ format.

I downloaded ss1sound.exe, and extracted it, but whenever I run the program I get to the line "Enter output file base name..." and when I put the any name in and hit enter, it closes. I can't find the extracted files, and I don't get any error messages. I've tried extracting from my CD install of the game, as well as from my portable version, and they both have the same result.

Check the other tools, especially the first two. Been a while since I extracted SS1 sounds...

Stupid question, but is there an easy way to view all the levels in the game, like using UViewer for the Ultima Underworld games?
66ee17be7f54b
I don't know UViewer, but if it's some sort of map-viewer then no, I don't think that exists.

You can use the System Shock Hack Project to fly around any of the SS1 levels.

Thanks for the tip, I sorta suspected that it would let me do this but couldn't get it to work. I opened it and it wanted me to open either a .res or a .dat file which I assume are graphics resource files? I'll give it another go later.

I had a look at this tools but it seems like none of them are capable of extracting text?!
Is there another tool to do this? I remember that there was a program that could export and import system shock text files. But I can't find it anymore :/
66ee17be7fbc3
You probably mean Gigaquad's translation utility. I think it already contains all texts in newslog.txt.

Yeah, thats it. Thanks.
I have no need for the english version in newslog.txt., because I'm trying to get the french text.
Which kind of worked now with this program.

Not sure where to put this but I found a fan made level (really) called the Cortex Reaver Challenge. You can find it here. There's also a fan made "sequel" to System Shock here, unfortunately it doesn't use the same engine. It also seams incomplete.

If you look closely at the screenshot you'll see it's from inkyblackness. The level was first released here.
