System Shock 2 (HOTU) Now Crashes on Vista

Up until now I've gotten the game to work perfectly.  After having it installed correctly I hadn't had any crashes at all.

Tonight for some reason. System Shock 2 now crashes upon loading a new game.  I start the game, alt tab out, change the affinity to one core, choose to load a game, and after the loading screen is done I get the message saying "SShock2.exe has stopped working."

The only thing I really did to my computer was reboot it a couple days ago, but I played a whole hour of System Shock 2 just last night without any problems.

I even went and did a totally fresh install.  Re-installed the game, registered that video file, ran the tool to fix the bugs, patch it, and make the game mod-ready, then went back and changed the affinity again and the game still crashes.

Could it be because of somewhere I saved in the game?  I'm saved somewhere around the beginning of deck 5.

No.

But I did try the same save on another system under XP last night and it worked.  It must be something with the game on this system that's causing the problem.

I see. So it seems to be a Vista genuine proplem. There's a TTLG thread about Dark Engine games on Vista, it doesn't mention this problem though. And I can't really help you as I run XP. If you find out yourself what is causing this problem please report.

Okay apparently it was something to do with that save on Vista.

After progressing some on the XP system and transferring the save back to the Vista system everything works.

When i try to start the Shock2.exe it says "System Shock 2 has stopped working " and goes throught the whole finding a soloution thing. WTF is going on. Keep in mind i downloaded mine from gamedownloads.com

You're also on Vista?
I can't find SS2 on that page btw. I have no idea what problems it may have.
In any case check the SS2 Tech FAQ if you haven't already.
