I have upgraded my drivers, what can I do?
I have an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M.
If any other info is needed feel free to ask.

This seems to be 8-bit. Check it in Video Options - resolution.
Try Timeslip's ddfix. Follow readme precisely. It's designed mostly for Thief2 and nVidias but is known to work with all Dark Engine games and on ATI cards too. I have HD2600XT and I'm using ddfix.

He already tried the DDFix. We talked over at TTLG before.
The funny thing is that I had the same distorted colours once or twice but it was never persistent.
Connor, when in game try hitting Esc -> Continue.

I've had such colours myself when trying ddfix for the first time. It was because my resoltion in ddfix.ini and cam.cfg didn't match and the game switched itself into 640x480x8bit

Synchronising the files didn't help so far but later I've noticed it rewrote something else in gam.cfg
game_hardware 1 to game_hardware 0

So I had to put 1 in there again and the colours were ok after that.

I did that game_hardware thing to 1 and it stayed, I will try your suggestions and get back to you.

Okay, now it says 800x600x16 and I get an error message and the game quits.

I apologize for reposting so many times, but I'm only a guest so I cannot edit.
Now the game just kind of freezes after loading the level, I just get a black screen... and it stays like that.

I'm sorry I've probably missed something... Did you do anything between the posts???  Each time you're reporting quite a different behaviour, you know.

Yeah I have, I have been editing the cam file and messing with the compatibility stuff. It is now set on Windows 98.
67510ec29236c
Any ideas of what I could do?

Try to reinstall DirectX and your video card drivers.
67510ec29277e
How do I do that?
Do I install another version or is there a way I uninstall it?
67510ec2928d2
For drivers: Delete your grafics card from the hardware manager, reboot and windows will find it again and ask for drivers.
For directx: Start the directx setup and you will be asked whether to install or repair it. Choose repair.
If you don't have such problems with other games directx is probably not the problem though.
Oh and turn off the compatibility settings. They're no help and can actually prevent the game from running.

I'll attempt this deletion thing, hopefully I don't F up my computer and create some black hole.
67510ec292a89
Wait! Do I uninstall in the device manager?
Give me a path, please.
67510ec292b82
Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc
Open the + before "Display Adapters". Rightclick your grafics card, choose uninstallation.
Reboot.

Yeah, that didn't work, now I get: "Sorry System Shock 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close"
67510ec292d5b
Don't forget the bug fixes from the SS2 Tool.
67510ec292e58
Yeah it still give me the "SS2 needs to close" error report.
I thought I might add this in too, there's an online game I play called Anarchy Online that has an issue with Direct X, the error says:
"No graphics device with hardware support was found using Direct X"
67510ec292f2b
Should I reinstall Direct X then or is that still another problem?
67510ec292fff
I would at least try the repair feature of directx as mentioned above.
67510ec293130
Can I get a path to that please?
I tried looking for a DirectX installer and I couldn't find one.
67510ec293211
I ihave DirectX 9.0c, the install thing doesn't give me an option to repair.
67510ec2933ef
First test directx if you haven't already: [Start -> Run -> dxdiag]
This page may interest you.

Actually I still think it's a driver problem. What happened after you deleted the grafics card from the device manager and rebooted? Did windows install new drivers by itself or did you point it to new drivers?

According to the ATI site "ATI Radeon Xpress 200M" is a chipset, not a grafics card. Your grafics card would be an ATI Radeon™ X300. If you can confirm this, then here's the drivers you want.
67510ec2934e0
Everything is fine in the DirectX department.
I did not install new drivers and neither did I.
Catalyst, was unable to install.
67510ec2935d4
Yeah well, download the drivers, delete the grafics card from the device manager and point windows to the downloaded drivers when it asks for them.
