the moral of the story is, if you are thinking of doing something, and your train of thoughts ends up with "I'm sure nobody will ever find out", just DON'T DO THAT.

I am in the market for a 3080 but I think I'll better wait for a 20Gb-version anyway - hopefully all the release problems have been ironed out by then. Also remains to be seen what AMD has to offer with their new gen cards. The only problem for me is that I might not have a new card yet when Cyperpunk 2077 drops in November.

Some more in-depth info from the guy who originally identified the cause of this issue:

yes, "don't be an early adopter" is something I can recommend wholeheartedly. wait for the first respin, or at least until all the A00 boards are off the shelves.

This video dates from before the Ampere-launch. Looks like he was on to something.

Here we are in December and the non-availabilty of new-gen gaming hardware has reached a level I haven't seen in decades, I would say. Whether it be graphics cards, CPUs or consoles, either sold out without new stock on the horizon or offered at moon prices in the weeks before christmas. Obviously the pandemic has a lot to do with it and things will look different come February, I'm sure but it does feel very weird, that so much is completely out of stock, often just minutes or hours after being "launched". I'm not used to that anymore.

I wasn't suggesting you buy from them, just pointing out they exist, hence, hw not available.

they are just trying to help you not be an early adopter I'm sure, bless their hearts. and sometimes they fail and buy out a ware nobody really wants, helping the economy and giving us something to laugh at along the way.

I know you weren't suggesting buying from them. Not sure if they are a big factor in the current situation. I think it's a combination of extraordinarily high demand during times were the supply chains are still dealing with issues stemming from the Covid crisis.

I guess it's safe to say that many people currently have a strong desire for escapism and many of them have more money to spare because they weren't spending it on a vacation this year. It doesn't help that the hardware in question gets hyped as a generation change, along with the new consoles.

anandtech.com: "Cost Increases and Tariffs: ASUS to Increase MSRP on Graphics Cards and Motherboards"

I guess I'll have to postpone my plans for a new gaming rig even further. Not because I was specifically looking for something Asus-related but because it is highly likely, that other asian companies will do just the same. Oh and Nvidia apparently scrapped those higher-VRAM cards, that I hoped for.

Overall, I consider the 2020 new gen videocard- and CPU-releases the hardware-pendant to Cyberpunks' epic release fail.

Mortal Kombat, which is my favorite video game movie.

carefully optimistic, but Tagawa better have a cameo there.

speaking of fails, a "news and cultural commentary" website puts up an article asking why Chun-Li is missing from the trailer with a serious face. hilarity ensues.
6744b4104fa27
In case you don't care enough about beat-em-up games to movie productions to understand this: Chun Li is not a Mortal Kombat character, she's from the other game: Streetfighter.
The article in question from jezebel.com may have been a genuine fuck-up or calculated clickbait, either way they're probably not unhappy with the click rates they get from indignant nerds right now.

looks like the "lets make sure all the skirts are long enough" people managed to worm their way into the Diablo2 Remaster team as well.

just like with FF8, not really a big deal as you are not going to be zoomed in enough to notice 99% of time, but still, yeesh.

whoever is redoing the AI models for Diablo2 Remastered is making sure there isn't too much skin showing, even on the monsters.

RPS: "Watch out, crypto-mining SSDs are on the way now, too"

The shortage of electronic components (discrete and integrated) in general is still getting worse by the way. It is very unlikely that things normalize in 2022.

no cameo. the movie is okay - these guys pretty much nail it. though I'd argue Kabal's deadpoolesque jabs were not bad.

Interesting times:

https://www.kotaku.com.au/2021/05/lone-developer-stands-up-to-grand-theft-auto-dmca-claim-wins/

Basic gist is that a group reverse engineered the code to GTA 3 and Vice City and released it online. Take Two put DMCA claims on all sites that had it. One fought back (via github not legally) and won.
