While there are some vague and half-assed discussions about building European semiconductor foundries, it would take many years and gross amounts of money to get it on roughly the same level that is currently state of the art, if they can/want do it at all. And then there's still the unsolved question of the necessary raw materials.

Like most people, I would theoretically be all for more general independence from Asian fabs in the future but we are very far from it and the overall costs (not just financial) for it certainly have to be taken into consideration. At least the current semiconductor shortage is bound to get better again within the next few months/years. It's not impossible, that the price pendulum starts to swing the other way by then.

Let's face it: they are definitely not shooting themselves in the foot with a 20% increase. I bet there are numerous industry heavyweights standing in line and even offering much more just for getting a better spot on the waiting list at this point.

More (good and reasonably priced) competition would be great, yes.

All the trouble caused by Covid, and the very many who have lost their jobs, or who's jobs are still uncertain (me, sadly :o(), and yet the mega rich are still happy to artificially increase the prices of their wares. Greed is always present.

I do beleive this qualifies for a fail of unexpected proportions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demonic_(2021_film)

Then again I feel like Blomkamp's majority of career choices after Ridley Scott's take down of his Alien 5 project are just a way of him to prove he was capable of handling it. Putting aside the obvious choice of actress in this one looking awfully like Dr. Shaw from Prometheus there were several less than kind remarks from the guy about Scott's unjust treatment.

not quite sure - has there been a buildup that would suggest otherwise? is this a franchise killer? there is a lot of mediocre/bad content out there, but only a small part could be considered a fail so epic it would be worth mentioning. a guy who made something good some time ago made something not so good recently, eeh, who cares.

for example, the upcoming netflix adaptation of Cowboy Bebop would be a good candidate - they are taking something already considered near perfection, "modernizing" it and vomiting it into existence. everybody knows it's going to be an epic pile of animal excrement, yet they are still doing it ("please guys, if you really have to do this, then just copy the original scene by scene, it will not be awful that way" "NO, we are NOT going to do that, we have our own vision and we KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING"). that is a fail right there, and on multiple levels - they don't understand the audience, they don't understand the source material, they don't understand what made it so great, and once their burning heap of garbage inevitably fails, they will also have no idea why it did.

I never got the hype around Blomkamps' movies at all. Even his most popular one, District 9, left me quite unimpressed.

I'd love to have seen his direct sequel to Aliens which completely ignores Alien 3, with all the actors back.

As a movie in and of itself I don't mind Alien 3. It was just such a MAJOR let down from Aliens. Done much more like the first film. Be like if Terminator 3 had been a slasher/horror flick (as the first one was) rather than action fest. That said I prefer T1 over T2 so perhaps a bad example, though the majority seem to prefer T2.

Well, compared to Prometheus....

I'd like to know how those two rejected Alien 3-scripts by William Gibson would have looked like.

There's a comic and audio book as well as a proper novel out right now which are based on that script. But it would have been quite the treat to see it in action (people familiar with the story know which scene might be on the level of the chestburster one in the original).

As for the hype surrounding Blomkamp I think it's mainly due to how good his short movie works were and the fact he made them available for free on youtube and steam. There's no denying he's good at making shorts but apparently struggles with full features for some odd reason.

Rockstar coming down hard on the disassemblies is disappointing, to say the least. You still need the original games if you want to use the newly built code, as the code rightly doesn't come with any game assets, so Rockstar aren't losing money or sales in the matter.

It really does seem like they've forbidden this because they want people to buy the GTA Trilogy collection. The same collection that screams "Don't  waste your money on this train-wreck".

Mind you, given that Rockstar seem to have abandoned the idea of ever releasing GTA 6 in favour of frequently re-releasing GTA 5 (such as releasing it on the PS3, PS4, and PS5) I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised at such a half-hearted cash grab.

On a tangent, I still remember seeing GTA 3 for the first time, on my mate's PS2. It was one of those extremely rare times when a game managed to amaze me, going far beyond what I was expecting. A real, living world (so it seemed) where you could go anywhere, do anything. As old and primitive as the game is now, back then it was a revelation.

San Andreas is both my favourite GTA and the most frustrating (due to the remote control plane mission I had to use emulation to get past).

yeah, the GTA trilogy situation sure is turning out to be an epic fail - and again, would love to know what the person who looked at everything and said "this is fine, I'm sure fans and modders will not notice, go ahead and release" was thinking. pulling down the old releases that actually work/can be modded is just a cherry on top.

are these people really not aware internet exists?

on a slightly related note, what the hell were they thinking also seems to be the most common reaction to the freshly released netflix adaptation of Cowboy Bebop. the less common one being kill it with fire.

Played GTA5 on PS3, didn't see a reason to play it on PS4 or on my "old" PS5 again :)
GTA3 (all 5 games) and GTA4 were much better story wise than GTA5.

Rockstar is like Capcom, I don't how many Resident Evil Upgrades / Remakes and Stuff exist,
played RE1 to RE3 on PS1, tried the RE1 "Remaster" Demo on PS4 - deleted it after 5 mins  8)

I quite liked all the remakes of the resident evil games.
They really are more remakes than a remaster. As for the RE1 one. If you expect it to be a true to original remake, it's not. It loosely follows the same story with adding more to it. And also the riddles are mostly changed from the original. The same elements are there, like keys, emblems and whatnot. But this time you have to use them in a different way. So in the end both games, original and remake are enjoyable in their own. The new one doesn't make the old obsolete.

The modern Star Wars sequels and their destruction of Luke's character is my biggest disappointment. He was this shining force of light, and that second movie just completely ruined it.

Thankfully they brought back old school Luke (sorta) in the Mandalorian. I just don't get the obsession of Hollywood these days in wrecking the great characters and movies/shows of old. The other is bringing back old shows, but with political correctness thrown in.

Take "Sex in the City" which is returning this week. It was deemed as not diverse enough of other nationalities and of LGB stuff, so now half the cast is black and there's a heap of lesbian characters thrown in. So stupid. The fact that they were all white was not the point of the original show at all, and to look at it in that way is so 1 dimensional.

Watching those critical drinker videos gets me hyped up about stuff that's annoyed me about modern media for a good while.

[edit after watching 2nd video]
Man he is COMPLETELY spot on about old Star Trek vs new. They don't even do proper military protocol (in new Star Trek). They'd have been thrown off the bridge for that in old ST. And spot on about the directors being man-children. We're raising generations of people that would not last 5 mins in the decades of before. Agree with everything in the video.

The problem is that the change is already in place, and can't be undone. World is what it is now. It's also part of why we have so much division in society, at a level that was never this big before. I just wonder where it's all heading. Present day you see it in the anti-vaxer protests (which is a largely far-right cult-like movement that seems to be growing in both numbers and aggression levels as time goes on with the worldwide pandemic).

The other as he says, is that the generations of today have not lived through the wars that generations past have, and as such are not as toughened as a result. So we get much more passive / pansy views put forth on what is a hero and what is not. Totally agree. Look to the movie "Demolition Man" I tell ya. It got a lot right.
