how to almost fail spectacularly, but turn things around by listening to the fans/customers, and win completely instead - or the story of Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

looks like if you give the fans/customers what they want, they'll shower you with money. such a radical, almost impossible to understand concept - who would have thunk. take notes, everyone with an old ip trying to make remakes/expand to other areas of entertainment.

the point is (as I've been saying for a while), no matter what you do, no matter how smart you think you are, or how great your ideas are, do NOT piss the fans off - because they KNOW what they want. this seems to be rather hard to grasp, but hey, if they can't understand words, maybe that hundred million bucks Sonic made so far can penetrate those thick, entitled skulls of theirs.

There's often not a homogenous group of fans who all want the same. The job of a producer is to try and cater to the largest common denominator. At least if we're talking of non-films like video game adaptions and superhero movies. And AAA games.
So this "just listen to the fans" strategy is a bit simplified, because you might easily end up getting 5 opinions from 3 fans.
Still, props to the Sonic makers for recognizing a critical mass, which isn't easy at all with the pissed off ones always being the loudest.

true, but it seems like there are a few things that are sure to piss everyone off. the current strategy seems to be lets do exactly that most of the time (and then blame the fans and their close-mindedness when the product goes down in flames).

The same thing goes with movie remakes. Stray too far from the original and you risk alienating your core audience. However if you stray too close (as a 1 to 1 remake) then people will question what the point of seeing it is. Like with the recent Lion King remake vs the Aladdin remake last year. Aladdin being FAR superior, and a worthy film to watch alongside the cartoon original.

The Blizzard game that I'll be forever pissed that we didn't get was that point and click adventure game set in the Warcraft universe. That looked excellent.

Should've used some kickass metal song, imo. They obviously have a younger generation in mind though. Not shitstorm-worthy to me. Game looks more like Unreal Tournament then Doom to me. Classic Doom had pretty fast movement and often many enemies from multiple directions too but it wasn't quite as breathless and sensory overload all the time. There also was at least some dark atmosphere - now it's all hyper hyper in the amusement park.

Looks nice but I already feel nauseated after watching 5 minutes of someone playing it on Youtube. It's a matter of taste and truth be told, I always preferred semi-tactical and more grounded shooters like Delta Force, Joint Operations or Battlefield over the faster paced arcadey fantasy stuff. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was pretty okay too.

yeah, it's not like the game has a ton of that already available, right? also, I don't think any mind was involved in this - not a working one, anyway.

not really a shitstorm, but definitely worthy of a "yeah, it's Bethesda" facepalm. and another fine example of the "everyone will hate that, so lets do it" creed many seem to be adhering to nowadays.

Oh man that Doom commercial music is horrible. If it's Doom you just have to put metal music in there. I get that metal is not "popular" on the radio at present, but who cares.
