Terragen maybe? There are a few tutorials out there. You should be able to use Stellarium for creating accurate images ot the night sky.

I was also thinking of Stellarium (portable version). But I think it can only create night skies seen from earth. So only half of the deal.

Plus, considering how far from Earth the Von Braun is, all of the constellations would look completely different. Not that anyone besides actual astronomers would really notice if you could see some of the lesser-known constellations in-game, but still...

Starry Night gives you POV of any cellestial body you choose using the "fly there" option.  I have it but I never checked to see if it actually moved the stars around correctly but I think it would, otherwise what's the point.

Though Tau Ceti is far away, it's not that far away and while it's true that the night sky as seen from TC would be different, some constallations would remain pretty much intact.  This would be the case for constellations, where all constituent stars are substantially further away.  It would also apply to constellations which are at "oppositon" to TC (ie. they'd be on the opposite end of the cellestial sphere, so the viewing angle wouldn't change as much by looking at that constellation from TC)

Well, you can still use it for Earth.mis. ;)

Besides, if you're going for accuracy - forget it. Planets and moons are virtually undetectable from a distance greater than our own solar system (ony a few hundred have been measured and those usually exceed the Jupiter's radius and luminosity by far) and the sky seen from Tau Ceti 5 is not nearly as mapped out as our own.

Tau Ceti is only 12 light-years from Earth. By comparison, our galaxy is 100,000 light years across. How exactly do you figure that the stars as seen from Tau Ceti are noticeably less mapped-out?

EDIT: Looks like Celestia might do the trick.

ZB, have you thought about making high-res skybox textures, e.g. 2048x2048 or higher?  I'd put that down as a prime candidate for a new DDFix-powered texture.

What a great idea :)
ZylonBane,
Thank you so much for SHTUP.  System Shock is my favorite video game, but it is starting to show some age.  With your mod, it looks amazing...I wish the whole game could have a facelift though.  I can't wait for Beta 7 :)

No disrespect to the Rebirth or other model replacements, but the original models are still the best looking, scariest.  Mods like SHTUP and Tacticool have the right idea.  Updating the textures or models while keeping the original concept.
I wish this could be applied to the character models as well.  Maybe smooth out their geometry and add some detailed textures without a complete recreation?  Or use the original models as a base and just add ALOT more detail, you know?  I might just get into rendering, I would love to contribute.

Something I've been wondering, is it possible to add some variety to the character models?  Clone dead crew members, and the same looking hybrids, etc.  That may be a stupid question but I don't know anything about this games engine.

Please keep it up ZylonBane, your mod is fantastic.

It's possible. It would require lots of new models and skins however, and it would involve changing the gamesys and possibly even the spawn markers in levels. But it's certainly doable.

I've known SS2 for a long time now but I have only played through it today, with SHTUP of course,
and I figured I could help with some of the remaining textures, if help is still needed :)

Since I know Japanese, I wondered about the big billboard-like sign on earth, is it supposed to say 医療 (medical treatment)?
If so, it's backwards :)
Also, what's with "女神を崇拝しなさい" (Please worship the goddess) on the smaller monitors ingame, is it in the original as well?

I have no idea what it's supposed to say. I didn't make that updated texture, so I'm not even 100% sure it's the same characters as the original.

"Please"? I've been told that that was in the imperative form (or at least, not the polite form). But no, that's not in the original. I'd recommend temporarily disabling SHTUP and running around the Von Braun to see what the original textures are like.

I can't read Japanese characters so I don't know what that says but if someone can confirm whether or not the verb is conjugated using the -nasai suffix or if the words "onegai shimasu" or "kudasai" are present, that would clarify whether a Japanese nuance is being misinterpreted as "please" or not.  "-nasai" is like an imparative but is sometimes used in a polite way as in oyasuminasai...  "please go and rest" (equivalent to goodnight) but literally it means "rest!"

Well, I'll try to be as precise as possible without diving too deep into Japanese grammar here :D
RocketMan is right about these forms, but I'm not misinterpreting it. It says "Megami wo suuhai shinasai",
the -nasai form being used as a "rather" polite imperative. To me it sounds a lot like the sort of imperative
mothers would use to their children. There would be stricter ways of saying the same thing, but you would risk
sounding a little too masculine in Japanese then. I was just wondering a bit about the exact wording here,
and if there was a reason for it :)

And concerning the sign on earth, the upper part seems to read "medical treatment", just horizontally mirrored,
and the characters that come after it... to be honest, I know them but I can't make any sense of them although that
might just be me, as Japanese is not my mother tongue (German is).

Back to my original cause, I enjoy recreating logos and posters for parody reasons and I'd be happy to start working
on any textures of any kind, assuming SHTUP is still alive.

Oh I wasn't saying you specifically were misinterpreting anything but thanks for the translation.

Sounds as though any level of politeness in this sentence is context dependent and it not explicitely part of the grammar.  There is no "please" in there so it is only by means of interpretation that you might add one in.  I don't think the sentence implies politeness simply because it's talking about worship.  Telling someone to worship, in the imperative form, does not suggest that the speaker would be polite about it.  Such things usually carry a condescending tone if anything.  As Shinrai1 points out there are harsher ways of giving the same command grammatically but it's not really necessary.  The intent is clear via the context.

Re: [Obsolete] SS2 SHTUP (Shock Texture Update Project)

Hehe, you're probably right nobody would politely ask for worshipping :D

It could be argued that the "nasai" is indeed a form of "please", as it is a polite imperative of "naseru" (which is itself a humble form of "to do") called the meireikei (literally: "commanding form"). "kudasai" which you rightly mentioned already is another meireikei of "kudasaru" ("to give, to grant", making it "Please give me, please do for me"). There is no word for "please" in Japanese at all ("Onegai shimasu" literally meaning "I'm making a wish").

Really strict and rather blunt ways of saying the same thing would be "女神を崇拝してくれ" (Megami wo suuhai shitekure) or "女神を崇拝しろ" (Megami wo suuhai shiro) but as I said before they sound pretty masculine to a Japanese speaker, but then again I wonder if SHODAN wouldn't ask to worship "her", and the whole phrase could be interpreted as a command by the many manifesting themselves on the screen ;D

Here's the original texture (sized up by 800%). Looks like the small characters may be different from the SHTUP texture.
