Expect something along these lines (for standard Unreal).

daamit, now I really want to play it.
Would you recommend this for someone who has not played Unreal?
if you are overhauling a game, and cannot answer "yes" to that question, then you ain't doing it right.

Similarly to Quake, Unreal felt like a tech demo with only a rudimentary story. It was revolutionary at its time and a lot of fun to play. But despite having the original box still on my shelf I never felt the need to revisit it.

I've played through Unreal nearly as many times as I've played through SS2. Love it.

Despite being vehicles for their technology in large part, Quake and Unreal are the two best pure FPS titles I'm aware of, and my appreciation of them only grows with each repeat playthrough. Unreal Evolution being the best way to replay Unreal IMO, whereas I'm quite the purist when it comes to Quake's gameplay.

You don't consider Nukem 3D to be in the same league? I do. yes the combat is a minor step back, but the level design, interactivity, and AI advancements certainly make up for that for me. PSX soundtrack is such killer too but of course not everyone has experienced that (though you can with mods). Probably my favorite soundtrack in the entire genre.
