Thought it would be nice to have a topic about music that hits you at the right moment in time by having something you can't grasp at first. Discovering something about you, your thoughts or the world. (While not "great when you're high" because that's boring and average)
Tried to describe my impressions but put them into spoilers because music should not be listended to with a mindset.

First time watching I got teary eyed. Maybe it due to the weeklong isolation or my sometimes emerging angst (about everything). I guess what really struck a chord with me is how these four people experienced something personal and inspiring. The video has short film quality and helps to convey a lot of that for me. And the deep synthesizer tones are kind of sad but also uplifting at the same time. Without the video it does not carry the same "heaviness" for me and I'm a bit dissappointed that, when you focus on the music alone, there are some percussion elements in there that give it a rather fabricated sound. Wish they had relied more on the sythesizer and less on cheesy piano backup.

I was reminded of Marling this morning because I heard in a podcast that she released her new album early. And I thought of this song which I liked a lot back then. It's about the impossibility of living with a mentally ill (and very religious) person.

I like how Space Song gives a completely different meaning/atmosphere to the 2001 footage.
You probably already know that Kubrick had originally commissioned a symphonic soundtrack for the film, but then didn't like it and went with the pop classics we all know. A bit like the Eurythmics 1984 album.

That French 79 video is pretty good, I get what you mean.

For some reason, this one is extremely moving, probably similar to what atropos felt with his French 79 song, despite its simplicity. While there are a few musical pieces that had a similar effect on me when I listened to them the first few times, only a handful are this potent, and Ukigumo is one of only two to have kept it to this day.

It's in German, if you are interested in the lyrics, there is a partial translation here, and since I would have to register to complete it, it will stay that way for the time being.
Here, it's the key change at the end of the chorus (for the first time at 1:00) that gets me. Liberating, somehow, which is probably what they were going for anyway.

Yes, its 24:00. I would advise to either hear it in full or not at all, skipping through really doesn't do this one justice. There is also an interpretative fanmade music video, if that tickles your fancy.
This one is the second piece to have kept the thrill I mentioned in the Ukigumo spoiler. While it would probably qualify as "great when you're high" it would be a shame to disregard it only on the basis of that. I wouldn't know about that high thing either way, apparently being a chemist makes you quite insensitive to many of the little toxins people use to escape reality. Anyhow, a brief history of life in just under half an hour, neat, eh?

Very interesting video and concept.

Speaking of Detroit I saw the docu Standing in the Shadows of Motown a while ago in which they revisit the original musicians of many hits of that time and place. And eventually bring them together for a little concert.
Now the song Heatwave by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas was already in my heart, but the rendition from that concert with Joan Osborne on the mic is something to behold.

Apart from a few exceptions, I'm not a fan of most of Danzig's own music but his voice is pretty damn good and quite similar to that of Elvis and Jim Morrison (Edit: apparently that's also the official blurper on their bandcamp-page), which makes his covers very enjoyable for me too.

I once saw their video for "Sleeping Sun" around 2005 and I was a bit moved, because the fighting knights have something sadly touching. How they have fallen so out of time. How their world and believes seem so small in retrospect.

I know the name but haven't actively listened to her music yet. From what I can tell so far, they are in the same ballpark and I will investigate further. Sevdaliza is by no means a "one-hit-wonder", btw. Exploring her discography is definitely worth it.

None, besides having a few friends of greek origin. I stumbled upon Marina Satti by chance and was intrigued by the sound. Just like I don't understand any of the turkish lyrics of She Past Away or the fantasy language of Dead Can Dance and still get a lot out of it. Maybe even more, who knows...

Not really needing an escape hatch from metal but it makes for a nice transistion between different styles. This song really has so many lovely elements of different genres all across the board (Indie Pop/Rock/Blues/Metal).
