Different style but similar voice. I really like these two sisters. They do great covers and original songs.

I kinda understand what you mean, but you see Beth Jeans Houghton suffers. While the Lovell sisters are strong and content women on top of their musical skills. Despite what they say, they display no signs of pain and misery whatsoever. They seem quite happy with themselves. And I can't get interested in happy artists.

I do understand what you mean but I think that's only slightly true for Larkin Poe. They aren't old and bitter enough to carry the blues like the greats (good for them!) but I feel they have a true and authentic passion for the roots rock and blues they play and it sounds like it comes from the heart.

Don't let appearances fool you. This guy is not just mimicking a traveling vintage blues musician. He is living that life.

You could easily accuse some of these musicians of putting on a superficial vintage facade as some kind of gimick but some of them are just the real deal.

Or this one, which, btw, I consider one of my favourite albums. Also fits the peculiar bill rather well:

And some just make stuff up and still come up with great soulful music:

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound as accusatory as I did in hindsight. I just wasn't feeling it with Larkin Poe. On another day I might like them more.

Anyway, alternative country: That peculiar enough? By the band that invented the genre. From their debut album in 1994 here's the Old 97s with "Doreen".

Lovely song and an interesting video that was created in collaboration with the NY film academy. The original video's nice too.

Found my new favourite radio station: Radio Zodiac, Dublin Ireland
They play basically what you'd expect when going to an Irish Pub (that doesn't currently have live music): 60s-90s rock, indie, alternative, some punk
The only ad I've heard in two days is about "Speedy Taxis" in Dublin by a guy who apparently recorded the spot in his basement by yelling into his laptop. He's adorable and hilarious.

The second link didn't work for me. But there's enough of them on YT. I like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaMxFj_lXOI

It sounds like electronic music played with analogue and brass instruments (the hypnotic repetitions) and in that regard reminds me of Moloko. Meute's music seems very much aimed at being played live (the crescendi) and I would certainly love to see them.

Has to be seen, if only for the performance of singer Róisín Murphy. Among other things it may make you appreciate how she first approached Mark Brydon (the other half of Moloko) on a party with the chat-up line: "Do you like my tight sweater? See how it fits my body!".

Oh yes, Moloko was absolutely great. At first I pegged them as just another radio-friendly one-hit wonder ("The Time Is Now") but they were way more then that and also impressive live perfomers. I've revisited their performance at PinkPop numerous times already*:

* and what a stunner Roisin was/is.

I really enjoy the genre mix of this and it blends well with the general mood of my Corona dog days...

Good stuiff. Reminds me of Tito & Tarantula and Les Rallizes Denudes.

Death Grips - No Love

To me, they are the 'spiritual successors' of the Bad Brains. People tend to disagree with me though.

Before Death Grips came to my attention, that title was held by a more Ska-leaning band called Mephiskapheles:

Although I don't listen to it (and experimental hiphop) much anymore, sole's "Live from Rome" was one of the those milestone albums for me.

In 2012 Bryan Ferry covered some his own songs in a 1920s Jazz style, using original instruments and recording equipment. The album is amazing.

This is probably the strangest music I have which is also strangely beautiful: https://www.mixcloud.com/hotelinteroceanique/allure-interocéanique-édition-2/
It's clearly an African singer playing from a tape. Hotel Interoceanique was a regular event of which I don't know much except it took place here in Cologne and they played a lot of forgotten tunes from unusual places over the world.
I've learned since then that there are small German music labels specializing in this type of international music archaeology, Habibi Funk Records from Berlin and Analog Africa being 2 of them.

Yep, that's peculiar music and strangely fascinating. Btw: the very last song of that mix (starting around the 50min-mark) would be just perfect for the Kill Bill 3 OST.

Oh, is it that feller that hung from your ceilling the other night then? They grow up so fast.

Haha, they do. At least the music lessons paid off. Somehow. *sniff*
