Bobbie Gentry: whatever happened to the trailblazing queen of country?
The 60s star – who didn’t just write her own songs but had her own TV show, made her own clothes and painted her own album art – could count Elvis and, later, Taylor Swift as fans. So why did she retire from public view in 1981?

Like many others I had forgotten about this trip-hoppy track, which is actually called "Underwater Love". (Flying Away is the album it's from.) The singer - Nina Miranda - is on Bandcamp these days.

I like Underwater Love too. It aged remarkably well. Because it got so much airplay inbetween actual garbage back in the days, it was easy to misjudge it as just another disposable gimmicky pop song - not unlike Moloko. It stood the test of time though.

I also like the storytelling nature of "Ode to Billie Joe".

One of my favourite peculiar music videos is this depiction by Anika of a traditional Eastern European dating game.

And Finnish/French The Dø do the afterparty.

Mr Bungle going straight up Thrash Metal? Now that's peculiar (and damned good).*

*It's actually a 2020 re-recording of the band's first self-released demo tape "The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny Demo" from 1986.

Has to be seen, if only for the performance of singer Róisín Murphy. Among other things it may make you appreciate how she first approached Mark Brydon (the other half of Moloko) on a party with the chat-up line: "Do you like my tight sweater? See how it fits my body!".

Still a great voice, less seductive but more powerful. Not a tight sweater commercial anymore.

I've discovered "filk music" - music made by fans of science fiction - after a friend linked me to this awesome piece:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TvCNjQmhwc

This one is very emotional.
"For space is wide, and good friends are too few..."  :(

And this one is very apt for those of us working in the software development field, still amazingly accurate despite being over 30 years old:

(I'm idly curious if the "rocketman0739 " mentioned as the source of some of these songs is related to our RocketMan.)

I like Carmen Miranda's Ghost, downloading the album as we speak.

This is what happened when I discovered filk (manly tears were shed): Julia Ecklar - Space Heroes & Other Fools [1983]

There's a YouTube channel called Songs from the Stars which has higher-quality versions of a lot of these kinds of songs, including the ones linked in your thread (not sure how much better the quality is, but the comments claim it's better.)
