haha, I guess I'll try that, is really the only thing left to try to make it work.

Thanks for taking the time to help me, psiko!

OMG I found the solution!!!!!

All I had to do is edit the default.ini file by adding a smicolon in front "AudioDevice=FMODAudio.FMODAudioSubsystem" and then adding "AudioDevice=D3DDrv.D3DAudioDevice" right below it.

Oh man, I feel so relieved!

I'll finally be able to try your mod!

Hope that helps anyone having the same issue.

See ya!

So, is this mod final or will there be new versions?

One more version, because I enjoy working on it too much.... but I won't release the next version for a while.  It'll probably be the final version, unless I decide to make an interim one.

psikoticsilver, I'sorry to bother you with this, but I've been to the official forums and it seems no got an answer for this...

I finally solved the main menu problem by modifying the default.ini file, adding ";" to the begining of the "AudioDevice=FMODAudio.FMODAudioSubsystem" line and then adding "AudioDevice=D3DDrv.D3DAudioDevice" below it.

However, now, after the plane crash intro the game loads fine, but there's NO SOUND at all!

I've seen fixes for this, but they're all for Windows Vista. I have XP.

Do you know something about this? What it may be?

Sorry for bothering you with this but honestly, I've run out of ideas...

Firstly I need some information about it...  can you send me the links to those fixes?  Anything that works for vista SHOULD in theory work for windows 7, so I might be able to apply this knowledge.  Also I need to know what soundcard you have in your system.  ALSO you need to check and see if the drivers for this sound card are up to date.

Thanks for helping psiko!

ok, fist the info you asked for:

This is what 2k tech support suggested for fixing this issue for VISTA:

This guy has the exact same issue as me:
He proposes a couple of solutions I tried most of them, escept the ones about codecs. I'm quite a noob in several computer aspects and didn't want to mess up things.

Regarding info om my computer, I should clarify, I have Windows XP Service pack 3. This why the VISTA fix doesn't work for me, as it requires to lauch the game in compatibility mode with XP SP2, which I cannot do.

Regarding my audio card, mine's onboard. Now I can't remember exactly which card I have but I checked the dxdiag and it says: Realtek HD Audio Output (Version: 5.10.0000.5345)

Ok I thought you had Win7 for some reason.

Firstly, download and install the latest Realtek drivers, found here (make sure to get the XP ones):
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Restart your computer.  Apparently Realtek cards require stereo mixing, and you can't enable it unless you have the latest drivers...  I copied this from the steam forums:
3. Go to Start.
4. Control Panel.
5. Sound
6. Click Recording Tab.
7. Right click under the list of shown devices.
8. Click "Show Disabled Devices"
9. Stereo Mixing should now be on the list.
10. Click Stereo Mixing, or Right Click and select "enable"
11. Try BioShock. Does it work?
12. If stereo mixing did not show up after you chose "Show Disabled Devices" you driver is out of date. You haven't been reading this guide thoroughly. Go update your driver and try again.

Try this first, then we'll go into other options.

Do you intend to add new features or will it be just fixes?

I can't add new features, otherwise I would.  There is NO SDK, no developers tools nor are there any un-compiled .u files.  If you have any method of further modding the game please inform me because I am more than willing.

I updated the drivers succesfully, however I have another problem, I don't have "Sound" configuration tool in the control panel. The closest thing I have there is "Audio & Sound Devices", however, it doesn't have a "recording" tab. the tabs is has are Volume, Sounds, Audio, Voice, hardware.

I think I read in some forum that those options (Show dicabled devices, stereo mixing) belong to the Vista sound configuration. But I dont know for sure.

mmm still no sound. However, I noticed that in the video, in the end, when it shows the "recording control", it has "stereo mix" and "microphone", and beneath those options, it says, "Select", and he checks "Stereo Mix". But in my case, after following the steps, my "recording control" shows; "record control", "*something* volume" (it doesnt show the whole name), "line volume", and "Stereo Mix". But none of the has the "select" checkbox underneath them. They do have a "silence" checkbox. I tried launching the game with "Stereo Mix" both silenced and not silenced, but no luck...

the sound driver does show an updated number: 5.10.0000.6043

Re: Silver's BioShock mod beta 6.0 released!

So you were having crashing issues until you switched from FMOD to D3D?  I was going to say if you weren't having crashing issues, maybe you should set all your settings while using D3D audio and then switch back to FMOD audio.

I took a quote from Tweakguides.ini:

"AudioDevice=FMODAudio.FMODAudioSubsystem

This setting determines which Audio API is used. By default the game uses the proprietary FMOD audio engine, and you cannot successfully alter BioShock's audio system to another one, such as the generic OpenAL sound renderer (ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem). This is because the game's main audio found under the \Program Files\2K Games\BioShock\Content\Sounds_Windows directory comes in FMOD's proprietary streaming .fsb format and so can only be played back by the FMOD engine. So altering the audio renderer will only result in sound playback in the game's main menu and duirng .bik movie files, but not in the game itself. If you're having sound issues with FMOD see the Audio Options under the In-Game Settings section for details of solutions."

You can't use anything BUT FMOD

Re: Silver's BioShock mod beta 6.0 released!

I tried it; the problem is that if I don't modify the default.ini, I simply cannot get pass the splash screen. It doesn't even CTD or throws a warning or error message. It simply shows the bioshock splash...infinitely. As soon as I modify the ini, bang!, the game works, but no sound after plane crash. Also, I noticed that there IS music on the main menu, you know, that soft piano music playing in the backround, but no sound effect when pressing the different options. The buttons are mute...

Re: Silver's BioShock mod beta 6.0 released!
6740cb41219a7
It's because the music is from the background video file...  I think it is a .bik file

However the sounds in game are from .fsb files, played through the FMOD architecture.  Now I'm sensing there is a problem in that area... but I can't find any sort of download to help with it.

The weird thing is, both on the official forums and on other forums on the web, there'r several people with this same issue, all of them with XP...
Someone said that the problem was because of VLC player. I have it, but as far as I know, its pretty much portable, it doesn't change or modify other files, not that I know anyway; but it may be a clue so as to what the problem may be. Some also said something about downloading Open AL codecs. but I'm kind of clueless myself.

Re: Silver's BioShock mod beta 6.0 released!
6740cb4121c71
well it's POSSIBLE that VLC is installing Codecs that interfere with bioshock.  IF you haven't uninstalled it, give it a try.

Also, openAL is something for Creative Sound Blaster cards and Windows Vista/7

I mean give both a try, it can't hurt.

OpenAL link:

*Edit*
I don't think I ever had the problem when I ran WinXP, and I had VLC installed as well.
Instead of VLC try Combined Community Codec Pack:

Re: Silver's BioShock mod beta 6.0 released!

Before I install the CCCP, I should mention th VLC I have is portable, got from portableapps.com, that is why I thought it would not install anything or modify files, however if it does, then I'll get rid of it, but then I have a question: other than simply erasing the folder in which it is, how do I uninstall it per-se?, I mean, its just a bunch of files in a folder I created called VLC, but thats pretty much it.

No luck.

Could this problem be related to the service pack?...All the fixes I'm readin for VIsta say to change the exe's xompatibility to XP SP2. I have XP SP3...That IS something that change since I last played Bioshock...could it be that...?
