Topic: SS2 Subtitles -- What am I doing wrong? Read 3484 times

Hi everyone, I'm really new to this whole place and to modding in general. I need to know how to enable subtitles in SS2 so I can play with a deaf friend of mine, and I've already tried everything I've found here, from the thread on downloading and installing SS2Tool to the one providing English subtitles. No matter what I try to do, and I really am trying to follow instructions meticulously, the subtitles just never show up.

I have the OpenAL Soft HRTF sound thing set up in my game (thanks to this site), maybe that's interfering with the process? I really don't understand how everyone else seems to be having such an easy time with this.

Here's a picture of my folder that has the actual game, post-SS2Tool. Are there any issues...?

that doesn't help too much - maybe post your logs (ss2.log, ss2bmm.log). anyway, it should be really easy - once you are patched up with the tool, you just download the subtitle mod, load it as seen on the screenshots here, then select it and activate in the modmanager window.

have you done that, or something else?

//almost forgot - make sure the path to the modfolder is not longer than 80 characters, meaning C:\Games\SS2\DMM\ss2_english_subtitles_v2 is fine, C:\Users\Myself\Desktop\Games\Best Games\Bestestest Games\System Shock2 The Best Game Ever Made In The Entire Universe\SS2tool Patched SS2\SS2 The Latest Tool Patched Version\DMM\ss2_english_subtitles_v2, not so much.

I just want to say I appreciate the time you took to write up that imaginary path.  :D

was inspired by an old screen capture circling the 'net ages ago made by some tech guy fixing up someone's computer, where the user tried to hide their vampire horse porn in a comparably long set of folders.

suffice to say, they didn't succeed.

I'm surprised the mod manager doesn't automatically warn on excessively long mod paths.

lets request that right now.

BMM doesn't know the path length because it only deals with relative paths. It would first have to figure out where itself is.

I am 100% certain the Win32 file API would allow it to figure that out.

Ahh, okay, so I was able to get it working when I put the "ss2_english_subtitles_v2" folder from the subtitles mod into the folder labeled DMM in my game folder for the BMM to be able to find it and allow me to activate it from there. I never saw any instructions anywhere tell me to do that -- maybe I just fell through the cracks?

Anyways, thanks everyone!

using the built in modmanager functionality to extract and load a mod is much less prone to error, so that's what the guide (linked earlier) recommends. generally, if you insist on doing things manually, you'll be on your own.

in this case, extracting manually will work as long as you don't mess the folders in the path up by accident. which is exactly what happened.

//yep, had a look at this, and confirming, if extracting manually, you will end up dragging the "subtitles" folder from the archive directly to the DMM folder almost for sure. which will not work, as the subtitles folder from the archive needs to reside inside its own modfolder - so \DMM\subtitles\ is bad, \DMM\subs_v2\subtitles\ is good. the modmanager will extract and load the mod properly.

the moral of the story is, maybe just try doing what the FAQs/guides suggest.

Hey! Yeah I tried to follow instructions the best I could, but maybe consider you guys take for granted a lot of stuff that instructions assume you understand.

I don't think that's the case here - I mean, there are three pictures that show exactly what needs to be done, it can't get any simpler than that.

anyway, if you think something could be added to the guide to make it easier to comprehend for newbies, I'm all ears as always..
