As the title suggests which movies or shows give you that SS feel, be it the original game or the amazing sequel?

At first I was going to include books too but in my honest opinion SS as a franchise is very visual and one of its strengths is the superb and overly creepy atmosphere, so while literature is one of the best mediums for storytelling it's also the most subjective as it relies on the reader to build the world being described.

So then which are your picks?

None, I think. Sorry...   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I guess the closest would be Alien(s) and The Thing but they aren't all that close, I think. Sometimes Red Dwarf gave me System Shock flashbacks but it was an all out BritCom so I'm not sure if it even qualifies here.

Maybe Event Horizon and Pandorum but I'm hesitant because they're not what I call great movies. Not sure why but The Expanse made me think of Deus Ex and maybe a bit of System Shock at times.

Movies:

SS1 -

.hack
Lawnmower Man
Virus

SS2 -

Event Horizon (as mentioned above)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Leviathan maybe, though that one reminded me far more of The Thing than System Shock

I still REALLY need to get back to the Expanse... I quit at the most interesting point in the story, just when the proto-molecule became known to all.

Films: Johnny Mnemonic, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Blame!
Books: Neuromancer, Snow Crash
Series: Star Trek NG, Altered Carbon.

I don't want to be that guy but the Blame! netflix adaptation was lacking to say it mildly, the manga is one of the best cyberpunk pieces of art ever created, which adds to the bitterness of Biomega being far faaar worse...

Ah Lawnmower Man, always forget that one, need to see it.
Never thought of Invasion of the Body Snatchers as being anything like SS2 but I see what you mean, good pick!

Solaris
Saturn 3

Never heard of Saturn 3? Seems like my kind of movie though.

It's like SS2 in respect to the paranoia of not knowing who is and isn't one of the many. Same with "The Thing".

The Faculty is another.

Startrek Voyager is uncanny, Dr Polito sounds and acts like Captain Janeway. And the whole thing is basically like if species 8472 infested a starship and the borg found it and managed to integrate capability, or if the USS Voyager found a buncha alien crap after a space battle and attempted to cobble together a better hyper drive with all the technology. In fact, the devs of SS2 originally were working on ST game that got transferred or something. The part about a fully synthetic AI is totally new, but the Borg definitely have the same parameters.

and the whole OSA thing is very similar to Kes in star trek voyager, she develops psi abilities over time, including psychokinesis , the 'detonation' spell from Secmod 3 (psi mine, she blows a hole in a table), and something that could be considered similar to invisibility..

As for ST TNG, the episode with the parasitic creatures is similar, but they were more cloaked, with a small nub sticking out the base of the neck rather then the whole worm parasite.

I just saw what looked almost exactly like Projected Cryokinesis being cast in the ST DS9 episode "the jem hadar" , but more like just force without the freezing *it still knocks items around*

The doors are also taken from ST

and I got a real close one, the movie Death Machine
youtube.com/watch?v=fxA-UU9FzjI

I think they got the idea of the hero of that movie for/from Goggles, or at least its the closest thing I have seen to what I expected system shock to look like from that movie,  so its a cybernetic implant armor suit, mechanical wormskin maybe, in Deus Ex (thats where they got the weird ass cyborg commandos in DX I guess lol). The movie also has a insane hacker, that disables protection, like on citadel, but its more specific.

The way the death machine sees (the overlay on its computer vision, i.e. like the thermal overlay the terminator has) is similar to how you see in System Shock 1 with the implant that draws lines to objects that are relevant.. I think the makers of that movie played SS1.. but you can only see it on screen for a few seconds.

In the movie most of what you see in the action scenes may very well be a space station or starship. The movie is cheesy but it matches the game quite well, they are both kinda cult things

This explains why I always had the feeling the whole atmosphere and feel of the game was similar to the classic and iconic sterile and efficient design of ST. But way way creepier which is why it's so amazing. Almost a reverse ST if you will.

If you're talking about these:

They were the reason I realised ST is not for me... This was the episode I loved the most when I started TNG only to later learn it was also the one fans and even the creators hated the most? It was absolutely disregarded later on and the worst parts is these were going to be the Borg... The Borg were originally going to be a fully biological insectile race that assimilates other life forms into the collective, basically ST had the whole assimilating swarm idea long before it became a major trope in sci-fi. I have nothing against the Borg we got but a race of a galaxy spanning parasitic insect race that assimilates all biolife it faces is too good. I mean just look at this art piece.

This doesn't feel like your average ST and I LOVE it.

Deep Space Nine went a little further into the doppelganger / people being replaced by aliens taking their form stuff, in the later seasons. Strong paranoia ensued.

Or y'know, they were inspired by the exact same aircraft HUDs that inspired SS1's HUD. The concept of "computer HUD over video" goes back at least as far as the late 60s/early 70s. If the hacks who made Death Machine were ripping off anything, it could just as easily have been The Lawnmower Man (1992).

But hey, maybe you're right, and the producers of a movie that was released in February 1994 were influenced by a game released in September 1994.

Just saw Death Machine and my God... That movie was more 90s than the 90s... I LOVED it! Such a rough and rusty gem of a movie!

Apparently it was banned in some countries? My my.

I guess I should slip back into ST eh? Ok might as well finish TNg and move on further!

Yeah. I've always imagined it if we had Star Trek technology (almost exactly) but were still stuck in our primitive greedy tribalistic and capitalist mindset.

BTW I think if they made the federation look like ferengi and have humans play the ferengi characters, it would be a more believable show.  The wild optimism about human nature just has not shown itself in the last 60 years lol.. and they had captain and science officer covered but where was the party political officer with his wide brim olive brown hat...? that society is pretty red

when you look at engineering quality, the traits they showed about society in the 60's show seemed realistic on the proper roadmap. when you look at quality, durability, life expectancy and thought put into most engineered things today, in comparison, it just looks like it was gutted down. Thinner, lighter, lower life span, etc... almost 100% cost based engineering. does it save you time and get you ahead? not really it locks you into a service/replacement contract and a subscription fee. that's true from cell phones, advanced industrial design softwares and even production machinery like tractors. you cant grow your wheat as a farmer without paying for a software change so you can replace engine monitoring parts now.

It's this way because we reward them for doing it with our money

Every problem with modern capitalism can be boiled down to a failure by consumers to protect themselves properly
