SS2 stopped working on Vista

I have played this game with no problems on my old Windows ME system, but I just got a new laptop and picked it up again.

After much frustration, I have added the fix from fileplanet and finally got the game to run. I've been it playing over a couple of days.

When restarting the game, I'm unable to load my last saved game so I have just gone back to a previous saved game. It's annoying, but at least I can play.

Now after over six hours of gameplay, my game won't even start. When I click on the .exe I get the "SShock2 has stopped working" message.

I have

Windows Vista Home Premium SP1
Gateway Laptop w/3GB memory
Intel Core Duo CPU T5550 @1.83 GHz 32 bit OS
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600

I have read a bunch of help tips on the web and on this site, but I don't know what to do.

I don't want to give up on this game just yet. Please help!

There's a link to he fileplanet fix in the forum under the topic "can't run system shock 2 on vista" posted on February 6, 2008.

The SS2 Technical FAQ focusses on Windows XP and SS2. Does this help with Vista?

Okay, maybe I should have clarified: No guide here links to that fix. And Liam...well he's Liam.
Anyway, that fix posted there contains just a patched shock2.exe for dualcore CPUs (or hyper threading). The SS2 Tool offers that and a lot more fixes.

The SS2 Technical FAQ is a general guide to problem solving for SS2. Not focussed on WinXP. All tips apply for Vista as well.
Seriously, try the guides we advertise here all over the site before going for tips by someone who posts 25 smilies in a row. Common sense.
