I didn't see this one coming.

Epic, who two years ago removed the perennially classic Unreal and Unreal Tournament series of games from sale have released the first two games Unreal, and Unreal Tournament 1999 for free!

Quote:

"Epic Games has given the OK for their 1998 shooter Unreal to be hosted on the Internet Archive, essentially making the classic sci-fi alien blaster free, and preserving it for the future. They've also given the same permission for Unreal Tournament to be hosted there too, making free the multiplayer muckabout that spawned speedier and speedier sequels throughout the early 2000s (not to mention the origin of one of the most memorable multiplayer FPS maps of all time, Facing Worlds)."

This is excellent news, especially for those who've never played these two great games. I am hoping that this might lead, somehow, to epic allowing the source code for these two games to be released. Unreal Tornament (1999) is an utterly fantastic first person arena shooter with tons of available fan-made levels, weapons, models and skins for the player and the NPCs, music, conversions, etc. Unreal is a great single player first person shooter, with a multiplayer that's sort of an earlier, cut down, version of Unreal Tournament, and if you play it and like it, then when you've finished the single player campaign, then download and try Join2's upgrade mod from:

For easy download and semi-automatic installation of the games, don't download them directly from the Internet Archive, instead go to the following links, and download then run the installers:

Unreal Tounament:  https://www.oldunreal.com/downloads/unrealtournament/full-game-installers/

Unreal is one of my favourite games of all time. Graphics that largely still hold up nowadays (in particularly the water and skybox effects), and has absolutely legendary music. I absolutely love it. The game could do with some source port's however, as the game natively does not play nice on modern computers without applying a few fan patches. Also has issues with modern graphics cards. Took me quite a while to get it all working well when setting up for my most recent play through.

Quite a few fan made campaigns for the game out there (best source UnrealSP.org). Operation Na Pali and Steele Dawn have been my favs of those, so far of those I've tried out.

Thanks for the mod shoutout, JD.

Cool of Epic to have done this. Don't want to praise them too much though.
