Long story short, I'm in the process of making 'teaching missions' complete with videos as resources for budding ShockEditors. I have some experience under my belt, but need some serious input from the rest of the SS community to make a decent go of it.

So how's about it? Anyone got ideas?

Ideas what to do? Whatever comes to your mind :).

Nonono...as in what would be the most useful things for a budding ShockEditor to know?

If you make a tutorial of just how to make a simple level with usualities such as doors, levers/lifts, teleport traps, AI behaviour and patrol troops, lighting and such it would already be massive. Something for starters, that is. Not for myself, but for the general public :).

Nice idea btw. Would be really appreciated if you pulled this off.

There was something similiar proposed by Rocketman (I think) to TF (I think) on TTLG who didn't say either yes or no, but nothing was ever done. It would be a very welcome addition to the community.

Gotcha.

The video will be more like a Powerpoint than an full-motion 30 FPS video, due to the massive savings in file size, but I'll be darn sure to explain everything.

I've also got a document detailing some basic operations and level-design concepts sitting around. I need to finish up and publish that thing already, as many of the ideas therein will be showcased in the tutorial. Someone on TTLG kindly reviewed it and gave it two thumbs up....

And Rainalkar - don't worry about this going undone. Part of my motivation is that I've chosen this as a college class assignment!

Looking forward to it. Hope you get grade 5 (A, or whatever you use :)).

Random fact: In Germany 5 is a fail mark (1.0 is the best).

So if you gave an old student a 5 and he got grumpy, would that make him a sour  Kraut?  8)

Okay; I've got the script and pictures well underway. I could definitely use a hand with the latter as it is taking me eternity to manually screencapture and edit everything with Irfanview and MSpaint. The tools work just fine but the time requirements are insane.  :p

BTW, there will be a later video will deal with things like how to place bodies, blood spatters, bullet holes, etc., in as realistic a manner as possible. I'm even going so far as to look up police forensic techniques to demonstrate my points.

What exactly takes so long about the images?

The overlap of functions between the image-editing programs I have is very small, and it's time consuming to reopen the same image anywhere from 2-6 times in different programs to get it looking right. Also, some of the concepts are rather tricky to illustrate.

(on a minor sidenote, my title screen also stinks)

I think your audience might prefer for your tutorials to be ugly but released opposed to potentially beautiful in limbo.

I don't think you should bother that much with the pleasantness of what you are doing. Just concentrate on making your life easier and achieving functionality.

Well unfortunately that's probably going to be where my tutorials are staying. Lost the flashdrive with all my work on it.

Lost your motivation after finishing your college class assignment?

How convenient.

Go lick a PSU capacitor.

Lost your motivation after finishing your college class assignment?

RTFP, retard. I lost all my work. College isn't even over for several weeks yet.

I may try to rebuild, or just enough to get by in class. Teacher isn't requiring anything near the end product I had in mind for an A.

It isn't just this, it's a hundred other things going wrong in my life. Suffice it to say I wish people had their own power switches.

Yeah sorry mate, but it's just hard to believe you only backed this up on an USB stick which you now lost. The idea that you realised underway that you couldn't finish this as perfectly as you'd hoped for isn't so far fetched...
Anyway I just hope you're not planning to go into full moping mode now. Maybe you can eventually put up whatever you did for your assignment so others can build on that. It's not like you ever had to do everything yourself.

I carried all the files - shocked, the game itself, the sound files, the pictures...all on a USB stick for easy transportation between class and home. And in RL I suck at keeping track of things, especially small and easily losable things.

Oh I'd *love* to post what I had. But exactly what part of losing everything didn't you get?
