Re: My custom system shock modification

Could someone help me getting this to work? I can get SSP to run after replacing the .exe and .cfg, the game starts up and is playable, but I see no difference in the mouse functionality. What am I missing?

You needn't replace the CYB.CFG file, the new .exe automatically calls the right file.

Still can't get it to work, then, in SSP. I'll try it with a clean CD installation of SS1 and see if I have any luck there.

The cfg file is... sort of difficult to use. How do I invert the Y axis?

Could you post your system specs, please? Have you tried a clean SSP installation, replacing only the CDSHOCK.EXE and using DOSBox?

Another Bug: The mouse sensivity in "lookaround mode" at 800*600 is too high. Mouselook mode is unaffected, though.

Since version 1.0 SYSTEMSHOCK-Portable contains this mod.

EDIT: Malba, you've made it into Rock, Paper Shotgun. Congrats. ;)

Okay, finally got it to work, though it seems to be a bit unstable. Great work! There are just a few more features this really, really needs though:

A way to invert mouse X/Y axes
A way to map crouching and leaning so that they "spring" back to center when released
Separate mouse sensitivity settings for mouselook/non-mouselook mode (or is that even possible?)

I finally got it to work with Kolya's explicit instructions, thanks anyway. The game feels utterly fantastic with the mouselook, thanks very much Malba! Perfect opportunity for me to replay the game.

[EDIT]
A quick video, for anyone interested.

Wow - that sounds like an incredibly useful mod for everyone remotely interested in playing SS1! Thank you very much, man!

Edit:
Hm, can't get mouselook to work with SS Portable. "E" is used for "Lean right", not "Toggle mouselook". Any ideas anyone?

Edit #2: Actually the mod seems to not work at all with my copy of SSP because the key binds remain unchanged as well.

What I did is:

1) Extraced SSP 0.9
2) Exracted XCDSHOCK (tried both versions that can be found in this thread)
3) Copied xcdshock.exe and xcyb.cfg to ..\System Shock Portable\SHOCK\RES
4) Renamed xcdshock.exe to cdshock.exe
5) Started SSP.exe using DGVESA (1024*768; 32 bit; full screen; RendererAPI: Direct3D9; Display driver: Direct3D9 HAL; not working in VDD mode; showing console)
6) Installed German language pack

No dice, so far.

Re: My custom system shock modification

I was having problems because I would keep changing settings in SSP that would overwrite cdshock.exe. So get it working all perfectly first, with all your options set, and then copy over the files (only the ones in Malba's first post worked for me) into RES.

Great work! One additional feature I'd really love is to be able to set system shock to 1024 x 600. Then my netbook gaming walhalla will be complete.

On another note: Do you really plan to add multiplayer? Of course, no one thought even mouselook would be possible without access to the original source code, but coop? Phew. Not that I didn't dream of it, of course. :D
The last 3 items in the TODO list will take some time to implement, but I really would like to add them. I'm not quite sure if multiplayer will be too hard to implement, though. Only time will tell...

Mouse axis switching is already possible in the version that I've uploaded today.
Crouch-hold was added to the todo list as well (I forgot to add lean-hold)
Separate mouse sensitivity for mlook and not-mlook is possible. I'll try to get them working on next release.

Wow, I didn't know my mod would be so famous. I'm really surprised!!!!

Well, yeah, you've only made modifications to SS1 that people have been wanting for years. Something like that is definitely going to draw attention. :)

Thanks. There are some real oddities in SS1's mouse sensitivities. In 320x200, 320x400, and 1024x768, cursor movement in "standard" mode is perfectly smooth. But in 640x400, 640x480, and 800x600, the cursor moves in large vertical jumps.

Also, in all resolutions, horizontal sensitivity is higher than vertical sensitivity in mouselook mode, while in standard mode it's reversed-- vertical sensitivity is higher than horizontal sensitivity.

Also also, I've just now gotten the game into a state where vertical mouselook doesn't work in 320x200, 320x400, and 1024x768. Weird.

Hey, another feature request-- mouse  button mapping. Possible? It would be nice to put Fire on button 1 and Use on button 2.

I tried 1280x1024 on Win7 32bit. I can change to it, but afterwords, it seems the mouse movement is messed up. I can move the mouse vertically fast, but horizontal movement is very slow. The game doesn't appear to be frozen, but with the mouse movement messed up, it appears the mouse alignment is off and thus I'm unable to leave the display settings menu.

That happened to me yesterday when I fired a weapon while searching a corpse. Appears to be random, though.

It works... sort of...

Corrupted graphics at 1024x768 and mouse is so sluggish as to be unusable...  I am sujre these are fixable... very impressed....

Great mod, I have a question though. Did you also do something to change the size of the text? The text is a lot larger than in SS Portable at the same resolution.

The broken graphics are likely unrelated to this mod.

Perhaps.  But at 640x480 (unmodded SSP),  they look fine.  Any idea what could cause this?  Graphics card is a NVidia 880GTX.

DOS4GW is still needed, too...........
