Make sure you use the latest dosboxpatch (see first post).
Then in the dosbox.conf try setting "cycles=auto" to "cycles=max".

Hi Kolya! Patching DosBox worked flawlessly! Thanks very much. Just to let you know that if you extract the 1024x768 patch the new cdshock.exe will not start inside dosbox anymore (get a invalid file error). Solved that extracting only the DATA folder and the mouse.com file

Thanks much - this is a brilliant game, storyline dense as a sci-fi novel. Great to play again after all these years.

PROBLEM FIX: I know nothing about computers so maybe this is obvious, but i'll post it anyway in case it helps somebody else.

1) Game wouldn't play at all by clicking SSP.exe
2) When i clicked cdshock.exe in RES folder it worked but with no sound effects (very bad - you have to have sfx to enjoy this game to the full).
Installed VDMSound with all options checked. Same problems 1 and 2.
3) Ran game by clicking vesa.exe in RES folder and - ta da - works great, sfx great.

Hope that helps somebody.
System: AMD Athlon 64X2 dual but running 32bit Windows XP.

Hello,

i want to play the game in windowed mode, but if i choose a resolution above 320x200 the game lags very much, is there a way to fix this? Btw the game only starts in windowed mode for me, if i try to play fullscreen i have only graphic issues.

My System is WinXP SP3

Thx

Hi guys, I've been on this forum before but forgot what screen name I used, it was a couple years ago.
Anyway, recently I had to upgrade my computer after the motherboard died, and SSP ceased to work.
It's an intel dual core system with onboard video, Win XP 32bit with SP3. The problem looks like this;
I start the game, choose option 1 in start-menu, it goes into black screen with garbled characters on tom and then minimizes to desktop.
If I click on it again it will go into fullscreen intro, and then minimize again alltogether - no window.
The main menu music keeps on playing until I shut down the ntvdm file from control panel.
I already updated the dosbox to latest version and tried resetting the resolution to 640 with same result.
Any ideas?

Hi all,
I am trying to get SS going in Windows 7 x64.  I install VDMSound (2.1.0) with Mouse2KV, and try to run dosbox.exe in shock\res.
First time I got to the Origin splash screen which seemed to be frozen, so I Ctrl-Alt-Del'ed out.
Now, every time I try I get an error that starts like this:
Causeway Error 09: Unrecoverable Internal Exception

Has anyone had any luck with Win7?

Yes, it works fine in DOSBox for me in Windows 7 x64.

You shouldn't install VDMSound, though, since DOSBox comes with a version of that integrated into it.  VDMSound is for getting sound in the VDM - Windows' Virtual DOS Machine / 16-bit emulator.  64-bit versions of Windows do not come with the VDM, and cannot run DOS or 16-bit programs at all (excluding emulators like DOSBox).

Starting again with the new 1.0 release, on Windows 7 x64.
I run SSP and I get the blue "System Shock" dos window popping up.  If I don't run as admin, it pops up and instantly disappears.
If I run as admin, itpops up and disappears after about 10 seconds.
Trying it under the commandprompt, "ssp" brings up the ascii splash screen but immediately drops down to another command prompt.

Sorry, while I did my best to write it compatible for any windows, I didn't really have a chance to test it on other systems (than XP). So the testing begins now.

Please copy "SSP.bat" from RES/SSP/src to the main folder (where SSP.exe is). Start the batch from a command prompt there. Does it say anything?

If you just want to start the game it's probably easier to use v0.9 for you now and use dosbox. VDMSound is, as NV said, useless on Win7.

Feel free to ask me for anything that needs testing on Win7x64, Kolya.

I ran ssp.bat and it says "find is not recognized as an external or internal command, operable program, or batch file

Also, I was about to post this but the topic was moved for the release of v 1.0
v0.9 has problems in my Windows 7 x64.  I got to the splash screen and it took a minute or so to show the splash screen, the frame rate was down below one frame per second.
It might come up again, but for now it's best to test on the 1.0 release.

Odd, the "find" command is definitely supported on Windows 7. And this is one of the few parts that was actually tested on win 7/64bit. Might just not find the find.exe. Oh the irony.

Okay, with help of Nameless testing this is fixed now. Replace the SSP.exe with the one attached to this post.
I'm updating the main thread as well.

EDIT: Done, updated version to 101.

Hey, guys, First of all, I'd like to thanks Kolya and all the other amazing people who made this possible. I have an insane love of the System Shock games.

I got the Gulikoza Dosbox version of the SSP working fine with the mouselook mod in my main PC, a quite capable Core 2 Duo. Thing is, I also would like to run SS1 in my EEEPC 10" netbook with a much more modest 1.6GHz Atom CPU. It seems that using DOSBox in that weaker machine is not the best option, as the game runs really slow, almost like a slideshow.

Thing is, I just can't get SSP menu to run on Win7 32 bits. it just shows the blue splash ASCII screen without any other commands (not even "press any key to continue"). Double clicking CDSHOCK.EXE doesn't work either. What would be a good option, then? I'd really love to have SS1 on the go.

thanks again!

Are you using the latest version of SSP.exe, as attached to this thread a few posts back?

68375cbf70e97Stormwatcher

68375cbf70eec
I'm using 1.0.1 from the download page. I also tried the SSP.EXE posted in the last few pages... Didn't work either. I'm gonna retry it now.
68375cbf7105e
Those are one and the same. Anyway, you probably won't get a good DOSbox performance on that computer as it's quite CPU intensive. I'm on an EEE PC 1000H and DOSbox is a slideshow for me.
Still I wonder why SSP wouldn't work there. Well, same route as before: copy ssp.bat from [SYSTEMSHOCK-Portable-v1.0.1/RES/SSP/src] into [SYSTEMSHOCK-Portable-v1.0.1] and start it from a command prompt. Any error messages would be helpful.

Funny, I tried the ssp.bat thing and it got me to the menu... I swear I thought I had done that. Sorry, my bad.

Thing is, the menu rightfully tells me that only the DOSBox versions will even start on Win7, which is what ends up happening. So I'm gonna reboot in the Win XP partition to try it there.

Thanks a lot for the help!

Ha, yeah, DGVESA was quite snappy on XP. But I got some crazy colors, using the Mouselook mod and both no compatibility mode and win 98 compatibility.

Gonna look for a fix for that. Thanks a lot
