Or they'd take the tech and say thank you with a cease and desist letter.

Or they'd just package it with DOSBox like they usually do.
68278ce07ad74
Well obviously they'd do that but I meant ToxicFrog's resolution hack.

On a sidenote: Can games downloaded from GOG be modified? Or do they put some kind of DRM protection on it?

GOG.com is supposed to be DRM-free. When you purchase something, you can download it onto any PC you like.

Hey Kolya and guys, thank you so much for SSP. That's an awesome job you did there!

However, I still got an issue with it. I run it on an Asus Eee PC, DGVESA and the monitor fix don't work but Mouse2kv runs fine - except that my movement controls become stuck periodically, turning me into the last member of the Citadel ballet troupe dancing down the corridors in pirouettes or making me stare dumbfounded at hordes of mutants gnawing the flesh from my bones. Would be great if someone could help me with this.

This is a known problem on some systems but without a good fix. Since DOSbox mode might lag your netbook, you want to get DGVESA running. I'm on an EEE 1000H and DGVESA works out of the box for me including 800x600 resolution. What seems to be the problem?

!!!!!! Kolya!!! thanks!!! im so happy that i finally got the game working well!!! the game is actually hard to find from anywhere these days and i would buy it if it would be on sale but this is a fair way also (keeping the situation in mind) :D so thank you very much for making my dream of playing The Original System Shock once again true!!

PS. Im an old SS fan from the beginning and very happy that there still excists people like you! :D

Hey Kolya, thanks for the quick reply. Well, I guess I got the Monitor out of Range problem. When I start with DGVESA it jumps right to the intro (skipping the Origin and Looking Glass title cards) and crashes with sound running when I try to start a new game. The fix doesn't work and tells me that it could not determine the version of my file.
68278ce07b5f5
Yeah, that fix isn't for your EEE. Besides it stopped working with WinXP Service Pack 3. You probably have the same onboard graphics chip as I got (Intel Mobile 945 Express) and a 1024x600 display? Changed any of the default settings of DGVESA?

Well...turns out that I should have taken "monitor" more literally. See, I had an external screen hooked up to my netbook so that I could play on a bigger screen. Without it SSP runs just fine under DGVESA. Anyway, thanks for everything. Guess I have to shelve my plans for System Shock: Electric Bugaloo - The dance musical.

Awww, now what am I supposed to do with this hat, suit and glowsticks I bought for the premiere?

I was about to post  a thread regarding the running of System Shock on a x64 based system, and this is going to do the trick.

Thanks a lot, all of you.

Now that I'm stuck with DosBox if I ever want to play SS again: How does one enable the Roland-MT32 emulation in this case using DosBox's built-in VDMS? It worked on XP with just VDMS installed, so it should be feasible.

Runs great, but I can't save in game.  I tried to save, typed in a name, and pressed enter and the screen went blank with some code.  Anyway to save it?

Make sure folders aren't write protected and don't keep it Program Files if you're on Vista/Win7.

No RMT32 emulation then. Oh well, next question:

What purpose do the FRNSTRNG.RES and GERSTRNG.RES serve? Are those the language files for the german and french version? If that's the case, are they correctly replaced by the 1024_768.7z versions?
68278ce07c1bf
Yes, those are the German and French text string files and they're part of the resolution packs because these text files contain all of the text in the game, not just what's language dependent, so in order to have the resolution button in-game display the correct resolution, as I wanted them to, these files had to be part of the resolution packs and they're very small so it didn't really matter, but of course all that's kinda moot with Tahan's hack and quite frankly, in the middle of this sentence I'm suddenly not really sure if that's what you wanted to know at all or if not, what the question was and what the hell "RMT32 emulation" is, in any case I haven't been idly replacing files in SSP if that's what you were implying.
68278ce07c2e5
I meant the question regarding the Roland MT-32 emulation in VDMS and how to enable it in DosBox.

Thanks. I'm just doing some research for some kind of SS1 FAQ related to another message board, and no, I didn't mean to imply anything. :)

Hi Guys, Im trying to play this portable version but the screen is flickering like hell (mainly sprites / textures with flickering colors) in 1024x768. If I set the game back to the original res (640x480, the first button in video options) everything is ok and the game runs smooth, but when I set the res to 1024x768 (the last button in video options) the flickering starts again. How Can I Solve that?

I run the Voodoo panel and set the driver to DirectX 9. This solved the problem in the main menu (thats made in 640x480), but ingame the problem still persists. Changing the bit depth to 32bits makes the game crash as soon as I open it :/

Running Windows 7 x64 + Radeon HD 2600 here.

If you're using a CRT monitor you should up the refresh rate in the DGVESA settings on the VESA tab.

68278ce07c642TioSolid

68278ce07c699
nah, using LCD here. It does not look like a refresh problem because all the original 640x480 sprites (like the life bar, the hud, etc) are not flickering, only the main game screen

...when I set the res to 1024x768 (the last button in video options)
Wait a sec... You're using Malba Tahan's mouselook mod, right? Why don't you even mention it, when you're not using the game as you downloaded it here? Trying to give me a hard time figuring out your problems?

Now please extract a new version of SSP, set it to use 1024x768 resolution and then we'll know where to investigate at least.

68278ce07cb0eTioSolid

68278ce07cb5d
Nop, Im not. Just extract the game, ran the SSP file, selected to install the 1024x768 resolution mod and asked to start the game. SSP crashed (since my Windows is x64). After that, I tried running Dosbox.exe directly and it worked, but the sprites were all flashing. Changed the Direct3D config to DirectX 9 and the menu sprites were ok, but ingame the sprites were still flashing
