Played SS1 when it first came out and loving what you all have done to make the game available on modern systems.  Playing SSP on Win7 64 Ultimate and loving it; even being totally creeped out and wanting to check around corners to take a pee break at 2am.  Stunning work.  Son is wondering if anything's in works to get it on tablets?

if your tablet runs dosbox, no problem.

You would still have no interface to play it.

forgot about that. virtual keyboard maybe?

And a virtual mouse. I think you'd be better off using a laptop or netbook at this point.

Anyway, Futher's son, as you can see from our little discussion there are currently no plans to bring it to a tablet.
SS1's game interface is quite complicated (even for its time) and very powerful. It probably wasn't a conscious design decision to make the interface an overwhelming experience, but it added a lot to the game for those who could appreciate it.
A touch device is by its nature not a good platform for such a game. They will have to invent better control devices first than rubbing with your finger over the screen. I dunno, eye tracking maybe?

I'm currently very busy, but I haven't given up on this. I'm currently studying (Computer Science), and I'll graduate by the end of 2014... I expect to keep working on this after graduation.

Um. I have a problem. It seems that the game crashed once when I played it for a long time. But at least my save games are still working well. And I have a question. How do I crank up the resolution to 800x600 upwards because even though I changed the resolution in the config file it still displays 640x480. And there are some black borders on the sides of the screen.

Here is my snapshot:

I don't think resolutions larger than 640*480 are supported - you are probably confusing this with System Shock portable (which does support 800*600 and 1024*768).

I am using the data used in SSP. But it only goes so far.

if you are using shlink, 640*480 is all you are going to get, no matter what kind of install did you use as base.

as I've seen Malba around today, let me ask - any particular reason why shlink only supports the 640*480 res max? I can play the music in the background, but really could use a higher resolution on a 1920*1200 monitor.

Hi, I'm just gonna ask if shlink is still being worked on because I would love to have music in it plus the latest was like 2 years ago.

it's on a hiatus as far as I know. the author drops by every once in a while, so you will probably get a reply in a couple of days or maybe weeks.

and yeah, it would be great to have music and higher resolutions in shlink - it is superior to the dosbox emulation in every other aspect.

Yeah, much faster than DOSBox, though shlink has a couple of bugs.

oh, it does? I have to say I did not notice anything unusual when I played last time (a couple of hours without break, I did have two or three random crashes, but that's expectable and not out of ordinary).

Yep, For example when you move the window it just magically moves to the bottom so I have to restart the whole app again so it is in the correct orientation. And the other one was leaning and crouching where it crashes the whole app if you do it more often. Well it only happened to me when I first used the app.

well then make notes and saves (and post them), and see whether you can make it crash again, might be useful in case the developments gets picked up again.

Well that was a long time ago (Well, a couple months ago to be exact), not experiencing that anymore. Well at least I'm using SSP 1.2.2 before. So my only problem now are dragging the window, resolution problem and no music.

Well, it happened again and this time it was in the small hole in the elevator in Level 1. Here is the save:

Just read this entire thread to see if it's worth playing yet or not. Have attempted SS only once, and if I recall correctly it was the SSP version, and back then I think the barrier was lack of mouselook and terrible performance.

So, in summary/to clarify:
1. If I were to get SSP and Shlink, would I have a relatively stable game perhaps able to be completed, that would run decently and have music?
2. Would these specs work, d'ya think:
Intel Pentium Dual Core T4500 2.3GHz
3Gb RAM (ok probably not relevant but for the sake of completion!)
Intel Mobile Graphics 4 Series
Win7 X64.
3. I think another reason for not getting past the first 2 minutes was the godawful low res. I'm fairly certain it was lower than 640x480. What's the smoothest I can get this game looking?

Thanks guys. Only inspired to play SS after replaying SS2 way too many times. Oh and I'm waiting to play SS2 on a different machine :D
