System Shock 2 crashes after cutscenes and when loading savegames

Hello everybody,

I have big problems playing System Shock 2 (CD-Version, german version, Win XP, AMD-Radeon 5770). The game crashes sometimes after cutscenes (they where shown without problems) or when I want to load savegames. Curios thing: When I load savegames and the loading circles are spinning the headline "Zugriff" is shown with a pink box in the background.

What I did:
- Followed the german install-instructions in the "SS2 Technical FAQ" (copying the shock-directory, ...)
- gamefolder is "D:\Spiele\SystemShock2\"
- Installed the SS2Tool (3.6)
- Extracted the "SS2 Deutsch Patch"
- Installed the SS2 Modmanager

Now, when I start a new game, the pink box (mentioned above) isn't there and everything works fine. I can play through the career to the first spaceship (where you get the wrench) and watch the cutscenes. If I save there, leave the game and want to load the savegame, the game crashes after the loading shoud be done and the game should start. When I save within the career (the three decisions you have to make), the savegames work fine.

When I activate SHTUP beta0.6 via SS2 Modmanager, the game crashes after loading (spinning circles), when I load a savegame or even, when I start a new game.
When I activate Rebirth 0.2 via SS2 Modmanager it works.
When I activate Rebirth 0.2 and then SHTUP I can load a savegame within the career and both Mods work, but the game crashes after the cutscene to the spaceship. New game crashes too.
When I activate SHTUP and then Rebirth new game and loading a savegames make the game crash after loading, when switching to the ingame-view.

HELP.

What can I do, to make the game working?
New games (DirectX9) work fine and other old games too.

ahh, the dreaded xp+hd radeon combo. it just doesn't work with the latest ddfix.. I think ddfix 1.5.5 did work though. download it, and copy ddfix.ini and ddfix.dll to your system shock2 folder, edit ddfix.ini and cam.cfg and make sure your resolution is correct in both files.. that should hopefully help.

Well, here we go: The older version of DDfix didn't cause the problems (I tested 1.5.5, 1.5.11 and 1.5.12), but it helped me to find out, what has caused the issues. The ingame resolution caused the problem! 
My Monitor has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 (16:9). But the game only runs properly, if I choose a 4:3-Resolution (like 1028 x 1024).

So, it's not bad to play in this resolution, but it's not the optimum. I thought, the widescreen-mod was integrated in the SS2-Tool?!

So, has anyone an idea/solution for my resolution-problem?

The widescreen mod was integrated in later versions of DDFix. Jermi could probably say since which version.

Yes, I read this on the ddfix-download Page and use the newest version 1.5.12. I changed the resolution in cam.cfg and ddfix.ini. Do I have to put in there the aspect ratio (16:9) somewhere in addition?

DDFix 1.5.12 is the same version that the SS2Tool installs. If voodoo47 was right about the problem stemming from your OS+video card combo you should be using DDFix 1.5.5 and the widescreen mod separately. I would still very much recommend to use the SS2Tool beforehand, just without the DDFix+widescreen option (can be found under bug fixes), because you will need an unwrapped executable that has the hex changes done for DDFix to hook in.
I don't remember having to set the aspect ratio.

Thank you very much! With DDfix 1.5.5 and Widescreen mod the game now works fine. No pink boxes, no crashes, just System Shock 2 with very fine graphics on 1920 x 1080.

I use the following mods now and they work fine (together):
ADaoB
SHTUP
Rebirth
tacticool weapons
vurt's hires space
vurt's flora overhaul
vurt's better water mod

good to know, I did not try out this fix personally, so I wasn't sure whether it actually works or not.

Basically that means someone who wants to play System Shock 2 on Windows XP with a Radeon card should use SS2Tool version 3.1 which still had DDFix 1.5.5 and the separate widescreen mod.
I'm attaching this older SS2Tool here. Maybe you could test that for us sometime Andarian? No need to screw your working game. Just copy another shock folder somewhere else and point SS2Tool v3.1 to this folder.
