he actually posted here awhile ago, asking about NewDark, as some exploits didn't work as good/anymore, so he wanted to know whether it's possible to re-enable that (un)functionality somehow.

our answers didn't make him particularly happy.


I'm still half tempted to beat his current cheatrun record (12:34) by about twelve and half minutes (his speedrun rule is anything goes, doesn't matter how you break the game if it makes you faster), just to see his long face, and hear his explanations how my way of breaking the game is somehow not acceptable, while his is.

Oh come on. Have you seen his speed run? You gotta give the guy some credit for his skills. He really is very good.
While the speed run rules may seem a bit weird to us, they are widely accepted within the speed running community, so there's really no need get condescending again. Unless you want to get quoted in his next run, I suppose.

Many speedruns utilize glitches (unexpected behavior due to the game's programming), to the runner's advantage. Glitches are allowed and runs submitted to SDA are expected to fully utilize beneficial glitches and bugs in their runs to save time within the confines of the game's behavior. In extreme cases, glitches allow you to skip huge chunks of the game and that can warrant a separate category. More about that further down.

yeah, but in that last video linked here he was referencing the Any% rule, and generally being quite smug about it. kind of makes you want to step into his smile a bit.

I'm not really into speedruns as they are generally just a big chunk of exploits stacked together. But as far as I understood their rules it's basically taking the vanilla game (+ official patches), start a new game and from there anything is allowed.
Depending on the game there are sometimes really no (or just slim) skills required, which makes it kind of boring and unchallenging.
I liked the 100% DOOM runs without resorting to glitches and exploits, just being good in the game and finding the best route to accomplish it.

I haven't watched his actual speediest speedrun, but I have to admit that the video you llinked was entertaining.

On speedrunning: I dislike the concept on the grounds that it is not playing the game as it was intended, but presumably these players played the game as was intended their first round through (though a game like Shock 2 deserves many normal playthroughs) and if so it's not such a big deal.

Exploits vs no exploits: I find glitch runs interesting in the sense of seeing what these players have found to exploit (so I can fix in the case of DX), but that's about it. The reasoning to skip cutscenes makes sense though.
If I were to take further interest in speedrunning I'd tend towards no exploit ones. Skipping large portions of the game just for a better time is not interesting nor impressive in itself unless there's actually skill involved in the execution of the exploit.

Regarding skill: speedruns are highly rehearsed. While the whole concept of speedrunning is a game of skill, only elements of randomization actually throw speedrunners off when it comes to the full run. Other than that it's just following a highly rehearsed script. Still skillful, but what I'd like to see is speedrunner-centric mods that bring out new potential:

Imagine a co-op modified Shock 2 mod where players have to race to the end of the game and can set traps and attack eachother, slowing eachother down, stat penalties (+10% spawn rate in loser's vicinity for two minutes, drop the keycard and KO'ed for two seconds), other modifiers like that. Speedrunners would have to form strategies that consider the other player, and much more unpredictability will be introduced to the game that true skill will have to adapt to on the fly.
To prevent player A getting miles away from player B and player B never being able to catch up, each loading screen you start in the same location, and getting to the next loading screen/progress route/objective is considered a round win.
so basically like racing games and games actually designed to race against the clock, but it'd be interesting versus other runners and in games like RPGs and FPS, with mods that make it a designed thing.

Haha, yeah, it is how things work. But Aurora and I had a conversation a while back about how in the first Shock, yes, there were those long chains of cause and effect, but it was all to do something fucking awesome: blow up a mining laser by firing it into the shield. Jettison a grove pod full of dangerous biohazards. Blow up some antennae. (Okay, that was less cool.) Overload the reactor.

System Shock 2: Get an elevator working. Hack into some sim units. Input a code that activates an antenna that somehow takes power away from Xerxes? And sure, you get to overload a reactor again, but that segment was over pretty quick.

A ZWave-based home alarm system built using a Raspberry Pi with emergency power and integrating various sensors and lights (Hue, etc). On the software side I'm using Domoticz on Raspbian.

Some things I'm missing in this:
- No beeping before turning red. How are the burglars expected to hide or even destroy it before it goes off??
- No alarm termination sound
- there are no 0 or 5 on the keypad, making it impossible to put in a certain familiar doorcode
And am I the only one who was amused by his efforts to hide his code?^^

Interesting. The pick up sound is annoying right from the start, but I like the elevator sound and the ambience (Screens at 1:16). Doors are a bit to clunk clunk (speed up klingon doors?). Footsteps sound a bit to flat and medival stoney at times.

Somehow I get a Tron wipe out of this.

I think this happens if you manage to kill the *.cal file of the model - he really must have done something Funny/Creative/Stupid to achieve this. a merging mods with vanilla crfs level thing.
