So you've opened your inventory, pressed and held ctrl to get the "?" icon on your pointer and then clicked on an item in your inventory slot?

Ok but you have to left click on something while you're holding ctrl down and you have to be in inventory mode.  If you just hit control briefly it won't work.

or leftclick the question mark in the lower left corner of your hud when in inventory mode (and then left click the item).

For me too, the CTRL -trick does not work. Instead, it works as toggle-crouch, when in inventory mode (but toggle-crouch is unbound, since I hate it, instead I have hold-crouch bound to x). I've lived with it, since there is the question mark icon, indeed, but maybe this is a bug?

EDIT: actually, I did have CTRL bound to toggle-crouch. But, I unbound it, it still worked as such but only in inventory mode; after a restart it does not cause crouch even in inventory mode, but it still does not bring up the ?-cursor.

Since what we are describing is default behaviour for the game, you may want to try either re-installing or at least defaulting all of your settings... just an idea since I don't know how else to troubleshoot this for you.

Thanks, but since there are no other problems, I think I will live with it for time being. Also, I'm on Linux and wine... I believe this could be caused by being on Linux and / or Finnish keyboard mapping, in which case, re-installing would not help.

But for the OP (or others), a good suggestion.

EDIT: Never mind, I tried re-installing since I thought it will only take a minute or two... copied the dir from CD, run ss2tool (which by the way, hang in the end after downloading newdark patch - I re-run it and it finished without errors - remember, I'm on Linux/wine so this glitch is probably caused by wine) - and, now without any modifications to the game dir or any settings, CTRL is toggle crouch by default, and does not work in inventory mode for changing the cursor to "query mode".

Meh, I can live with it - but just wondering if I'm the only one in addition to OP having this issue?

I have the same problem native on win7/x64 and wine (Mac OS X) ... So I don't think it's a wine issue

This is probably my fault, introduced via SS2Tool.
You can bind Ctrl to the examine function by adding the line
Code: [Select]
bind ctrl +query to user.bnd
