CD Projekt Red says it will stop hyping games up years in advance
Cyberpunk 2077 was first unveiled in 2013 and spent years being teased before its disastrous launch.

a fail is not really a fail as long as you learn your lesson.

And they seem intent to learn all the lessons the hard way. I vividly remember their ill advised marketing stunt when they said they were shutting down GOG.com.

Fans noticed that Cyberpunk 2077 uses a German manhole cover - but it's the wrong DIN type for a street! Then the German pipework reconstruction union intervenes.

I sort of feel bad about Cyberpunk 2077. It's an awesome game, I've played it several times and got different endings, but well, the more I played it, the more I was thinking about the System Shock games, until I gave in and went back to playing them...

I don't know about this company, the discussion goes into the wrong direction.

There are plenty of examples of great games on now "older consoles", like tlou2, horizon zd, ghost of ts., gow4, ...
So basically it's not the hardware's fault

Is there even a confirmed release date set for ps5 version?
Would not buy it anytime soon (maybe after many patches)...

Aye. Some of the games on the NES and Atari and DOS era PC are still great today. Good gameplay is timeless.

I would care way more for a 3rd part of the Deus Ex HR Series, both (HR and MD) were great games, but underrated.

I tried more than once to get into the 1st Deus Ex, but even with all the mods the game is way too bland (many will disagree).

A finishing trilogy game for HR Series would be great, but very unlikely.

The true test of a good game, as with anything, is time. And many games are still worth playing on even 8 bit computers or consoles from the early 1980s. Many people's top ten game lists include games from the 16 bit era or earlier. And the very active retro based forums, websites, and emulators for those machines, to say nothing of the new games being released regularly for those systems (such as the ZX Spectrum, the Commodore 64, the Atari 2600, the Amstrad CPC, etc) demonstrate this popularity and hence the quality of the more popular games.

What do you mean by Deus Ex being 'bland'? I can't see how you can mean the story, situations, and dialogue (though of course opinions about anything can vary). Do you mean the graphics? Even on the day it was released, the characters looked ugly, but I never felt that that impacted the game's overall quality adversely.

BTW, have you played Prey 2017, and the Dishonoured games? They are all fantastic, and the gameplay isn't too different from the Deus Ex games, sort of.

I for one still play a fair bit of retro games + mods for older games. New games are good and all but some genres don't exist practically at all anymore (eg Command and Conquer style RTS games). Newer does not = better. Newer is just newer. Sure it looks nice, but gameplay is what matters most.

Hell, last year I barely played any new games at all. Spent most of it playing Fallout New Vegas due to the Frontier mod being released.

Tonight was playing Doom 2 due to chapter 3 of Blade of Agony (a Wolfendoom TC) being released last week. And that mod is truly amazing stuff when you factor in how old the Doom engine is (yes I know source ports have upgraded it massively). Long live retro gaming.

And emulators + emulation in general, I've been obsessed with since the 90s. It's great seeing various consoles live long past their release via that. Just last week was playing through The Darkness (PS3 game) via emulation. Great fun.

yeah. I was kind of bothered by new games being garbage in the past, but then I realized all the good games that already exist will keep me busy for the rest of my life without a problem, so I stopped caring about how much garbage is pushed out nowadays.

count emulation in, and I'm good for the next 200 years (just in case we manage to pull all that gits crap in the next 3 decades).

Yeah, Darkness was a legendary game, dark, violent and extremely cool - played on original ps3,
the first minutes get you glued to the screen.

English / Original voice from Mike Patton contributes first class.

Also a rare jewel nowadays.

@JDoran

... way too bland - as i wrote a personal opionion which many will disagree, tried it at the time it was released,
didn't get me hooked, also retried later - same effect.

HR & MD (the new DX gen) were a completely different story (multiple replays).

Did enjoy SS1 & SS2 (multiple replays, also recently, great mods @ 4K),
also played through Dishonored 1&2, but Prey didn't attract me (too repetitive)

Maybe a remaster of DX1 using Dawn Engine would do the trick ;-)

There were and will be always good & bad games, however nowadays there is more hype than in the old days,
the jewels will shine none the less and will be found eventually - maybe not at the first glance.

don't trust many reviews.

I rest my case. Hype for Super Mario Bros 3 was through the roof, and there was even a full length movie which was basically one really long advertisement for the game called "The Wizard", out at cinemas. And that was all back in the early 90s.

So I played this briefly. Gameplay is clearly not the Dev's priority, much like with their other games. Even then the writing is not that interesting and is overinflated. Every other sentence is filler nonsense from a team trying too hard. Do not recommend. It's not the future of first person RPGs one would expect after having played the ingenious OGs: Underworld, Arx Fatalis, Deus Ex, Shock 2, New Vegas...

Odd video. Be like if Fraiser was a crazy lunatic and lived in the Cyberpunk universe.

I think that was the intention. Together with the music, I find it creates a fascinating ambience.

Definitely. A real drug trip by the look of it.

hehe, more like careful from experience. Also there are so many great games out these days that I don't feel the need to jump on some hype train. I just finished Metro Exodus, which has great atmosphere and a solid story, often Thief-like gameplay, is emotionally gripping and you get to shoot tons of mutants.
I have finished Metro Exodus yesterday and concur. There are a couple of rough edges but overall it's really good and much better than watching a couple of Let's Play-videos led me to believe. The varied and open hub-based maps were a much needed addition to the linear underground environments.
