Saw that one.  He does seem to post more actively over there.  Perhaps more responses there?  I really like that it seems like he's getting some of the graphics for items (and maybe mobs?) in there now too.

I may not often post status updates much but I'm plugging away. The main reason I don't post that much is that I don't have anything really earth shatteringly exciting to post about. Feel free to ask any questions on what I'm doing though as I regularly keep an eye on this thread.

I may not often post status updates much but I'm plugging away. The main reason I don't post that much is that I don't have anything really earth shatteringly exciting to post about. Feel free to ask any questions on what I'm doing though as I regularly keep an eye on this thread.

Have you tried Quark army knife editor with .map files ?

Have you tried Quark army knife editor with .map files ?

It's not a program I'm familiar with but I just downloaded a copy of Quark and it seems to open the file without complaining.

Okay. I know this screen shot looks really ugly but this is a familiar location in Hammer. So yeah, I have very basic support for generating maps in the Valve Map Format(Source engine) now.

Is this Source (Half-Life 2) or GoldSrc (Half-Life 1)?
Looks more like GoldSrc to me. But never really checked out Source mapping so maybe the editor just looks the same.

AFAIK Half Life 2 source since the editor is the copy of Hammer located in my HL2 directory. I'll confess to being fairly ignorant of the different versions though and I'm not yet familiar enough with the tools to open the file in-game.
No reason for doing this other than for the hell of it and to prove it possible but one of my higher level goals when I started out is that my exporter would work in multiple formats. For instance I hoping that some day the Arx Fatalis source code project will release map formats I could work with. My code may not be the greatest but it does have the virtue of parsing the data files separately from outputting map files so it's somewhat simple to plonk down a new map format.

No, why would you bother? Quake maps are designed for Quake. System Shock maps are designed for System Shock.
The point in Hank's tools is so we can have SS & UU on a newer engine in addition to having the games be modifiable.
Hank's project brings the games forward. What the hell would playing switcharoo with maps do? The odd choice of a Quake 4 inspired TC for System Shock is the most positive thing I can see coming out of this. Just my jaded perspective though.

Not quite. One way from System Shock/UW to idTech .map files.  System Shock being tile map based doesn't exactly lend itself to loading complex modern map formats.
That said I'm fairly certain I have all the tools at this point to do a crappy editor for Shock and UW if I set my mind to it.

Once you've ported everything you intend into idTech4 both games would be half way to being reconstructed in a more modern engine, then people can expand upon that and have SS unofficially remade in idTech4. Once/if SS is remade then you can then port Quake maps into SS, but the unofficial SS. Correct me if I am wrong.

This is what I meant by "possibly in the future" anyway.

Into System Shock, this is the distinction and currently it is not possible to play Quake 4 maps in SS. Again, not that it would serve much worth but it could be a possibility eventually.

You are poking fun at the use of the word "port", but I think it applies here. System Shock is currently not compatible with Quake maps, so technically the term applies no?
