A part of my collection of "newer" games...

..is everybody getting auto-censored audio on youtube or is just me?

a couple of months ago they have made several attempts to coerce me into uploading my id to supposedly verify my age (yeah like that's going to happen - just look at the age of the linked gmail account you morons), I'm thinking maybe this is the punishment?

Do you have an example to check? Over the past couple of months I occasionaly got a message that some video can only be watched after age-verification but overall only maybe a dozen of times.

I did hear that YT put new and much stricter rules for content creators regarding the use of swear words into place. Apparently these lead to de-monetization of countless old videos or entire channels. Maybe re-categorizing such content is some kind of workaround to prevent YT-repercussions?

no example at the moment, I just noticed audio gets muted sometimes when the LPer (or whoever) says one of the forbidden words, and there were enough occurrences to make me realize this is not random, or something the content creator did willingly. will maybe link one once I encounter it again.

The age restriction thing appears to be something they use to censor videos they don't like, but who aren't actually doing anything illegal.  Seen it used to block documentaries and things occasionally.

Haven't come across any automatic censoring of swearwords of any kind.  Though I can't think of many YouTubers I watch who swear very much?

yeah, but an occasional swear word sometimes flies out (midwives, mostly). most creators will self censor by slapping some funny sound over it when processing the audio, but some leave it. and in the last couple of weeks, I just see the occasional swear word being muted out, so it's either everybody is doing the same thing all of a sudden or youtube has some greater good in mind. again.

Midwives?  Can't think of anything offensive they say, apart from wanting to rip out spines?

Or, wait, I guess you mean the streamers swearing at the midwives.

I haven't noticed any muting of single words in YT-videos recently. My guess is still that when that occurs, it's likely done by the videos creators in an attempt to avoid getting de-monetized due to YT-"guidelines".

naah, this looks sounds like a machine did it. sloppy, uncreative, soulless, not applied if the word is muffled a bit and not recognized by the algorithm (a human would have no problem).

yes, the LPer screaming/swearing is a very common reaction to a first time midwife encounter.

Probably got shadow picked to become a guinea pig for new profanity filtering techniques then.

I missed the whole Prey scene when it came out.  Just about finished it over christmas week while afk with family.

It's not too bad actually.  I went in with zero expectations so that probably helps.  It seems short.  Like each deck is just a little smaller than I'd imagine it should be.  Hard to really put my finger on why as I think timewise it's comparable to SS1 or SS2 which is odd given how most reviewers say it took them way longer.

Art style is consistent but comes across as a tad bland.  The lighting is nice, not too dark or too bright except for when the moon shines in.  Also hard to put my finger on why it comes across as a bland style.  Not as over the top as say bioshock and not as visceral or moody as SS2.

Perhaps the music is what detracts from the appeal.  There are times it plays a short bit when certain enemies are present and it has a very "this is a horror moment" vibe to it that makes it not scary at all.  Particularly the invisible enemies.  Feels sort of gimmicky.  Would have been way scarier if it was simply silent with scuffling noises and then something is chucked at you from the unseen guest.

There is a lack of theme, or strong theme.  I think it really does come down to the music.  It all seems rather trite,  well done but comes off bland.  Maybe it's trying to be too many things at once with some areas seeming more like bioshock environments with others like System Shock and others like walking horror game and others like an escape room game.

I want to like it more.  It's the kind of game I'd love, but not really something I'd want to replay for a while.  Bugs me that I can't quite pinpoint why.  I like, but I don't love it.  My son is very excited to have me smash the mimics though, "Pow da spiders!" and that makes it quite enjoyable.

I like Prey a lot, but I think its greatest weakness is the characters. There's no SHODAN, no Delacroix, no Diego. Just an asthmatic fat guy and a bunch of people who all suck in their own unique annoying ways. Makes it hard to feel bad when any of them die.

Criticizing the music is insane though. Mick Gordon composed most of it, and the atmospheric tracks are pretty fantastic.

Also hard disagree about poltergeists not needing an audio cue. There's already enough silence with skittering noises when dealing with mimics. When there's an invisible enemy around that can one-hit kill you into the ceiling, not warning the player would be some supreme bullshit game design. Knowing it's around creates suspense. Getting whacked out of nowhere would just be surprise.

I'll agree there's a certain blandness to the station design, but it's realistic, so I can't really fault it. Everything looked how it logically should have looked. I think they mixed things up about as much as they could have without getting silly. The swank office areas, vs the science areas, vs the industrial areas, all had a decent amount of visual differentiation.

I agree about the characters, they really sucked.

Also, more to the point, no Many.  They're a great antagonist in SS2, with their taunts and their understandable-but-not-relatable goals, and most of their hybrids and cyborgs also have distinct character that helps to cement them as a meaningful antagonist.

The alien enemies in Prey just seem to meander about, they don't seem to have any real sense of purpose, no goal.  They're just monsters, and are not even particularly good at being monsters.

Eh, the Typhon are functionally the same as the Many. They exist to convert humans into more of themselves. In that sense they're both just sci-fi versions of zombies. Prey gives its zombies a bit of a Cthulhu vibe though.

The Many really played well with the ideas of psychic hive mind better and tempt you to join while Prey toys with mind things but not in a way that connects as well with the player or the mimics.

Also I've chased mimics several times and killed them when they "stand" up doing nothing.  And the taller phantoms seem stuck in an area sometimes and even teleport away while they are attacking me making themselves miss, or looks that way.  They seem trivial and dumb half the time.  Whereas a SS2 hybrid still scares the crap outta me when it yells behind me.

Do appreciate the tentacle horror Lovecraftianness though seems out of place in space.

Probably the only environment I consider outright boring in Prey are the cargo bays

Doing another Prey playthrough right now, and I'm noticing how dominated it is by the scavenge/recycle/fabricate gameplay loop. Whereas SS2's recycler was just something you carried around to turn useless items into extra cash, in Prey this mechanic is so elaborated upon and magnified in importance (since you will run out of ammo if you rely  on what you just find laying around) that at times it feels like it's the primary goal of the game, and frankly it gets a bit monotonous.

Maybe all the Prey-talk should be moved to a Prey-thread, like https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=6587.0

Especially since you can use it to fabricate neuromods, which encourages you to make yourself over-powered by farming everything into the recycler.

The bad news is people are still using Reddit
