As a HUGE fan of Doctor Who growing up, I found this video to be quite awesome:

I'll note that whilst I do quite like the new series (more so from David Tennant on wards), I'll forever be more of a fan of the original series which ran from 1963 - 1989, due to it's darker (much more horror style) serious tone. The newer series certainly is great as well, but it's much more mainstream.

As for the video. COME ON. It's a remote control K-9. A character/robot that came about during Tom Baker's (my favorite Doctor of all time) run of the show. I'd love to have one of these.

If you checkout his other videos, he specializes in old (70s - pre-2000s) computer and console repair. Some quite fascinating videos that he's put out. His experiments in trying to remove yellowing from plastics I found particularly interesting.

Looking at those screenshots, I can certainly see what he was on about. That's nigh on perfect. Not much uncanny valley style stuff going on either.

Now just needs to be in VR holodeck style and then it's Matrix time.

I've watched the first 6 episodes of that. Of those I'd recommend episodes 1, 2, 5 and 6. All of those really excel. I'd put episode 5 "Human is" as my favorite of the lot.

All round it's an excellent show. Great to see more pure science fiction on television again. Episode 7 is apparently due to screen tomorrow btw.

It's spawned an interesting movement to #deletefacebook, either by deleting accounts entirely or by at least deleting old posts so no one can trawl through them in the future.

As someone who never understood the appeal of Facebook, I'd be happy to see them collapse.
It also made it easy for me to delete my own account there (something I didn't know you could do, as I hadn't found the option in the past), since I don't use it anyway.

It's about time we rethink the fact that most of the internet is based on offering services for free so that those services can spy on you, either for targeted advertising, or other purposes.

Kinda proud to be able to say that I never had a FB-account, not even a fake one. But it should be obvious that FB is just the tip of a much much much bigger iceberg and that those methods will prevail and become even more dangerous in the future.

I see Facebook as a necessary evil nowadays, since practically all of my relatives and friends are on there, and is a good way of keeping in touch with them.

However after a crazy brother of an ex girlfriend of mine from a decade ago, created a fake facebook account with someone else's name but filled it with photos taken from my profile with vile disgusting depictions underneath. On discovering it, I immediately contacted FB, stating that it was a fake account pretending to be me, they responded (after 2 weeks) that the account was not pretending to be me despite the photos, and refused to remove the account.

I sent them a scathing response (obviously) and lost all faith and respect with them after that. They have no morals at all. If it wasn't for the friends and family factor I'd have deleted my account then and there. Since then I barely use it to the same extent. I also use FB marketplace in conjunction with my Ebay and Gumtree retro videogame and console business which was the other factor for keeping my account.

MySpace had better customer service + response times in replying to emails. I now am wary of adding anyone new to my friends list on there, and only add those that I trust. Once you see something like that. Photos of your family, yourself with various people etc, with vile stuff written underneath....

I have no words for it. And that FB would not act is just wrong, both ethically and legally. That account stayed active for all to see until I went to the police.

Yes, that's the big lingering question behind it and it's been debated for decades now. Many business models have been tried but the data collection wouldn't just stop to be a business even if companies would find other ways to make a profit in addition to that. Neither would companies like Cambridge Analystics disappear. People won't start to behave radically different then they do now any time soon either. The only remote chance of limiting the threat is lawmaking and subsequent enforcement. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

Is that the GDPR-law you talked about in your recently created thread? I sure hope it will be effective as a protection for us! I am quite a pessimist when it comes to that though. I feel that something like that can't be stopped effectively. Slowed down, yes but they probably find ways to evade this just like they do it with the taxes.
