The singer/songwriter/producer Jim Steinmen passed away two days ago (April 19th, 2021). He was best known for writing most of Meat Loaf's best songs, but he famously also wrote for other artists, such as Bonnie Tyler and Air Supply.

The songs he wrote were famous for being bombastic, emotional, and powerful, and include Bat Out of Hell, I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That), Heaven Can Wait, It's All Coming Back to Me Now, Total Eclipse of the Heart, Rock and Roll Dreams Come True, Holding Our For a Hero, Two Out of Free Ain't Bad, and Loving You's a Dirty Job But Somebodies Gotta Do It.

His first album with Meat Loaf, Bat Out of Hell (1977) was rejected by several potential publishers, who called it gimmicky and unlikely to sell, but it went on to become the third best selling album of all time (souce: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums) and the best album ever (source: me!).

RIP Jim. You've left us many truly great songs.

Meat Loaf was furious when Steinman gave Total Eclipse Of The Heart to "that Irish milk maid".

I distinctly remember a conversation I had, while Sisters of Mercy "More" was playing at a student party, with a girl I wanted. She wanted to discuss my future posing a question to the effect of: "Do you really want to stay here forever and end up teaching media science?" To which I replied: "No. I want more." - almost in sync with the chorus of the song that was playing. At the time I was a bit embarrassed to be so easily influenced (I was very drunk) but saved myself with a sheepish grin. In retrospect this was hilarious and unintentionally honest.

I liked a couple of Meat Loaf songs too but never really felt compelled to play them ever since the 90s. Never was big on Sisters of Mercy either but I like "More". On the other hand, I definitely have a soft spot for Bonnie Tyler and actively look up her hits on YT every few months.

Sisters of Mercy's music and videos are like a good 80s vampire movie. And then there are the lyrics...

[The Sisters of Mercy] revealed the cunning duality of a group who were fearsomely intellectual if you cared to delve into the lyrics a little bit ... but were also an extremely clever joke, possibly at the expense of people who thought the band were fearsomely intellectual and delved into the lyrics. I've still not really got my head around that one, but it's all quite funny. Probably.

Steinman had written the phrase "Turn around bright eyes" long before and even used it in a musical (The Dream Engine, in 1969), before it became part of Total Eclipse. He was generally big on rearranging and recycling.

I feel like this is about a woman I never met, yet she'll leave. Fuck, that hurts!

Didn't know it at the time, but I had met her seven months before, in early January 2017.
Spent some time together and it felt like we were growing fond on each other but it never shifted to something romantic (though for a brief time my brain fevervishly clouded up in the prospect of "...it might...").
Well, maybe a friendship then, I thought, but over the years I could feel her interest fading away, not answering messages for weeks, phone calls getting shorter and more distant, meeting dates postponed (sometimes right when I was suited up to leave the house). Corona really didn't help and then at the end of February she sayd goodbye forever; moving to another country. Apparently not for long, as she seems to be back (I think) but didn't call. So yeah  .

Could you recommend a low priced drum computer capable of producing a beat like in the video and in 80ties niche music accessible for laymans/beginner use? Not synthesizers, just a drum machine.

My tip is to look into mobile apps. DMach is free, fairly easy to use and could probably produce that sound. But it will require tweaking the instruments a lot. This will be the same for most synthetic drum machines.
Of course you could always sample the start of this song, if this is exactly the beat you want.

I cannot imagine what it must be like looking for a soul mate in this day and age. Making music and art seems like a good way to spend time meanwhile.

That's pretty impressive.

At the same time, the stop animation style in the original worked with the robotic movement of the Terminator. Visually though looks pretty good.

the first movie has a few scenes that aged quite badly, the stop motion parts of the final chase being one of them. the edit smooths it pretty nicely, preserving the original feel of the scene while getting rid of the bad parts almost fully.

also, making the puppet move the head around was a great idea - this gets rid of the puppet looking, well, like a puppet on a stick (which is what it was) pretty much completely (didn't actually realize how much a static head contributes to the puppet feeling until seeing the edit). and it's just one guy on a regular computer doing this.

To me, the one part that always felt wrong about that scene was the strange gait, which was entirely intentional as one leg is damaged and he's limping, but always looked uncanny to me.  They obviously left that in - since as mentioned, it was intentional - but it contributes a lot to the skeleton seeming like a puppet.
