I'm sure I mentioned somewhere that there's going to be a Cowboy Bebop live action thingie. Then Spike's actor had an accident and covid happened of course. But it seems they're on the final track.

yes. it's going to be an unforgettable experience I'm sure - as in, you won't be able to forget the experience, no matter how much you'd want to.

Ghost in the Shell (live action version) was a far larger crime to humanity. The original anime is cyberpunk greatness.

didn't even know it existed. now I do.

thanks -_-

Yes, it came expected. While I like Scarlett Johansson and think she does have the looks for playing an anime character, the movie felt totally unnecessary and soulless, even shallow although many sequences were visually actually quite impressive and more or less copied directly from the anime.

Where the anime felt like more than the sum of its parts and inspired thoughts, the live action movie managed to achieve the opposite effect.

As a huge fan of the 95 classic (it was my first proper anime movie after all) I agree... However, and hear me out on this, I think the song that came out from this mess of a movie was kind of cool as far as covers go.

I watched Portrait of a Lady on Fire. If you can deal with a slow paced beautifully shot French film, I suggest you go in blind, because anything anyone could tell you about it, the film tells it better.

I have had "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" on backlog for a long time now. Maybe I should finally watch it.

Stanley Kubrick - Mystery of the seven diamonds (film analysis by Rob Ager)

Eh, what he interprets as "diamonds" I'd call rhombi in most cases, which - being a basic geometric form - you're bound to find everywhere you look.

But this reminds me of this other mystery video I watched yesterday about the origin and meaning of the phrase "What's the frequency, Kenneth?".

KolyaDr Strangelove or the secret origins of Schuberts' "Rhomben statt Bomben" catchphrase.

It certainly has a lot in common with numerology hocus pocus in real life but Kubrick actually was one of those directors that deliberately worked with symbolism and hidden layers in his movies. Unlike with the dialog and actor direction, he and his cinematographer John Alcott were ultra meticulous in terms of all their compositions, which makes these movies so fun to analyse even 40-50 years later. It's very unlikely that, for example, the Strangelove scribbles or the 2001 sequences were just randomly chosen decorum and also not very likey to be purely MacGuffins either. Rob Ager and others have done several interesting videos about Kubrick before and I find some of them very intriguing. If nothing else, it makes for good Sunday afternoon entertainment.

I've seen many, very different takes on the movie version of The Shining over the years and they all presented some very cool bits of evidence for what cinematographic geniuses Kubrick and Alcott were, regardless of whether you agree with these theories about the movies meaning or not.

Apparently this is old news but I only just found it because I saw Tencents' name listed on Top Gun 2 promo material and googled them together:

cnn.com: "Tencent-backed 'Top Gun' cuts Taiwan flag from Tom Cruise's jacket"

Interesting times that we live in.

this comes as no surprise to anyone who knows a bit about china's history - on the list of all the things china would want to make not exist, Taiwan takes the top spot. so yeah, if there is an opportunity to erase it from somewhere, no matter how petty it is, they'll take it.

I had a younger relative set up some stuff on my smartphone today.

so I'm officially an old man now, and I kinda want to have this noted somewhere.

I also have trouble with "newer tech".
Somehow I get the feeling someone is sitting there and is trying to make it as intuitive as possible.

Maybe that wasn't a mistake.  They "try" to make things intuitive but end up failing impressively by bombarding you with a camouflage of pretty colored buttons in no particular logical arrangement and hiding all the power settings that old timers actually used.  To them, this is intuitive.  In my case, I can't even use new stuff because it's too difficult for me to accomplish even the simplest goals.
