I watched È stata la mano di Dio ("It was the hand of God"). And it was good to see a European film. It made me feel like the first season of Into the Night in that regard. A coming of age story that isn't about pretty girls coming out as gay while fighting zombies is pretty rare on netflix these days. But this is director Sorrentino's autobiographical story about a sensitive young man and his hilarious and tragic Neapolitan family in the 1980s. You come for the amazing opening shot and Luisa Ranieri's incredible tits, you stay for the characters and the pictures.

In almost every music video I watch there are the same few comment types on top. There is "Still vibing to that song in 2021!" and "They don't make them like that anymore." and finally "This used to be my father's favourite song. Reminds me of long car rides we shared. I miss him so much."

The first is a transparent attention grab, it happens for any year as long as the video gets enough views. The second is the only one of the 3 that's probably genuine, because it's such a common misconception that the music of your youth was the best, whether that was 50 years ago or 5. It is only the last of these that I wasn't sure about. I kept finding this type again and again though, always highly rated.

Now given the number of people on youtube it shouldn't come as a surprise that any song reminds someone of their dead loved ones. However why would you feel the need to tell that to random strangers on youtube? Okay people today do stuff like that nowadays. But youtube is not a platform where people usually share personal experiences beyond a concert they (allegedly) attended. No one writes about how this song reminds them of an ex girl friend, which should be a more frequent (and somewhat less personal) experience. And the stories are similar. It's always about a close relative, but never a wife or child. And it works, high ratings are guaranteed. But why? What is the comment rating on youtube even good for?

Like I said, I don't partuclarly enjoy thinking about why people would lie about dead relatives for upvotes on youtube. But these comments are fishy... Okay, before I make myself look any more like a cold hearted asshole, I googled a bit.

But the popularity of this type of comment implies that there must, on occasion, be some pretending going on. The question is: why?

This article at least puts my mind somewhat to rest, because however misguided, it's just kids. Not fucked up adults on some fame seeking trip as I suspected. Probably.

I miss flash games. Was some excellent tower defence games. Still playable in Flashpoint (flash game emulator) at least. Plus it made for a more animated design in websites. Compare that to nowadays where everything's so static. Fixed. Feels like a step back.

The webby awards website is my favourite of the bunch, as it's like a retro future website where if flash never died, what we'd see in web design. The airforce.com one goes for a more videogamey approach, but is also quite interesting.

I dunno, I would take an open, first-party, virus-free technology that doesn't use up MB of data (like CSS) over flash any day of the week. And most web users would. There's a reason flash is nearly universally hated by everyone except for a handful of flash games.
