I've never understood people complaining that the front page is silly when they use the site without being logged in.

Whatever we may say about the aims of the algorithm, it does at least (mostly) show content from people you've watched or people it thinks are related.

One thing I've noticed is that if you listen to music on YouTube, it starts to fill most of the suggestion slots with songs you've already listened to several times, which makes the front page very boring - but at least it's not suggesting voodoo's weird stuff.  So maybe that's the solution?  Listen to lots of music until it only recommends music to you.

I am logged in. I want food and System Shock, not that complicated really.

Nameless VoiceI'm not really complaining, I was just pointing out something - I am aware that I would be getting better recommendations if I were logged in all the time, but I guess I'm kind of bringing this on myself - I try to keep as few active accounts as possible online and I'm just used to keep stubbornly doing that :)

I put that down to most "normal" people on the internet not having the same tastes as me.

heeeey another facebook report - pretty slow start with Dragonball and a solitary Me163 Komet, but then straight to children with gigantic tumors followed by some hardcore commie propaganda garbage.

guess it could be worse? we'll see soon, I bet.

and almost forgot, thanks to that 8k monitor brain aneurysm guy, I clicked on exactly one split-screen soft youtube vid, and now I'm getting that instead of cow hooves. there's always a silver lining.

@voodoo47 , stupid questions, are you using ad-blockers all the time, plus deleting all the cookies & temporary files and closing your browser both before AND after logging into Facebook, Youtube, Gmail etc? We're all slaves to the recommended "algorithm", but you can do a few things to somewhat influence the suggestions. I only use Facebook primarily for professional development courses & contacts with other people or organisations in my work area. Prior to signing in, I always close down the browser, delete all cookies/temporary files, then I log ONLY into Facebook for my career area stuff (I don't have any other tabs or windows open unless I willingly click on links posted about my line of work), then upon logging out, I close the browser down, delete all the temporary files and then resume my Internet habits. Most of the Facebook "recommendations" I thus get are mostly related to my career area or to my friends page activity, which I can live with.

I also do the above whenever I buy stuff online, or when I log into Gmail, Youtube: Google owns both so if you browse YT whilst also checking Gmail, they might be using your email messages for video recommendations?

It's quite overkill, probably not that effective practically and silly, but as the victim of a recent insurance data leak, with a notable increase in scam & spam messages right afterwards, I'm even more paranoid. Does Facebook, Google, Youtube, Instagram etc absolutely "need" to know what stuff I've bought online or all the websites I've visited before & after logging into their services? I've found most of the recommendations on social media platforms to be "eh" at best over the years, so privacy & online fraud concerns aside, they wouldn't be very good at advertising to me anyway. I can definitely live with the limited/inaccurate profile they have on me.

That's way overkill.  You can just use Strict tracking protection mode in Firefox to block most cross-site cookie access.

Or, you can go even more overboard and turn on First-Party Isolation, which blocks all cross-site cookies.  I used to run with that, but switched to Strict Tracking recently as Firefox improved the feature and it does most of what First-Party Isolation does, without breaking sites like PayPal.

You can also use Firefox containers to run Facebook tabs in their own container, if you just want to isolate Facebook.  IIRC, there's even a specialise version of the container plugin that specifically only puts Firefox in its own container.

adblock yes, clearing the browser sometimes.

also this isn't a support request or anything, just me kind of making fun of fb/yt, them throwing mostly disgusting/depressing stuff my way for no particular reason.

I use Firefox but I must admit I don't use containers for Facebook or other social media platforms, I'll definitely give that a try, cheers. Sounds like the algorithm gods are just being arbitrarily weird & mean to voodoo47. He's a modder for System Shock games, he's not that evil!

Still companies out there using DOS systems. So it's not totally uncommon practice.

Every time I see a company "modernize", the new system is always 10 times worse than the old one.

The company I work for also still uses some testing gear running on DOS for certain products. It's considered irreplacable although I'm sure it's just a matter of costs for designing a new one from scratch. Still works fine but would be super hard to repair due to lacking documentation. Last year the HDD died and for a short time that caused some panic in various departments because it seemed like noone bothered to create a backup and also because no external FDD was available anywhere.
