Rockstar became ultra-greedy corpo sleazebags recently and some very important key figures left or were forced out since RDR2. You can't count on anything they announce anymore. Yet, this trailer makes it look like nothing bad ever happened and leaves me a little hyped for a new GTA again, escpecially one with a Bonnie & Clyde or True Romance-like premise set in Vice City. Quite the achievement.

I liked the first three titles well enough but I had my fill. I played a bit of GTA V and was horrified how restrictive and limited the mission design is. What's the point of throwing you in a huge sandbox and then instantly failing any mission as soon as you step 5cm to the left, or shot someone instead of running them over?

and iirc, it (GTA) had some horrible drm that pretty much exploded people's computers. if you have drm, I'm not interested in your product*, end of story.


*yeah yeah, I have a few games on steam that technically have drm, as you cannot run them without the steam client. they are maybe worth 20 bucks total, so whatever.

I find the entire concept of someone else having control over what, when and where I am allowed to play unacceptable. hence, my (potential) interest in (non-handheld) consoles ended with PS2.

Actually I don't remember Rockstar using horrible DRM apart from requiring you to install an additional launcher and to create an account for their useless portal Rockstar Social Club. Sucks a bit but is not nearly on the same level as something like Denuvo or Sonys' privacy nightmares, at least not obvious to me.

I understand some of the criticism towards the gameplay elements and quest design and often consider them to be the weakest elements of Rockstar games myself. Yet, their world building and open world fidelty is unbeaten, which is something that drove my fascination with video games ever since my early experiences with Ultima VII. Their past games also have a lot of excellent characters and good to excellent writing overall. I consider RDR1 and RDR2 actual masterpieces in terms of writing. Also I used to like that their pyhsical releases came with oldschool goodies like foldable maps, stickers, post cards and stuff. Lots of good music in the games too.

I also used to sympathize with their release philosophy (concentrating on few but polished and impactful releases with effective marketing and not rushing stuff that isn't there yet) but that was in another past era, I guess.

What is the problem with new GOG installers?

Because of Gog Galaxy, they have deprioritised manual installers. As a result, many games (especially larger games) will have 30 manual installer parts, because they don't want to increase the size of their installer part files (for some reason), and they are often out of date as Voodoo said.

Honestly, I just want to download install_game.exe, even if it's 30+ GB. That way I don't need galaxy and can just easily install things. At the moment downloading everything is a huge hassle.

The good news is that, being DRM free, most GOG games are portable, so it's usually easy to create your own installer by simply zipping the game folder as a self-extracting zip file.

If I can't run the game without an account, it's as bad as Denuvo. In some ways it's worse. My account can be retroactively deactivated/deleted, removing my access to the game, whereas Denuvo is offline.

Steam has the same problem. Steam is at least easy to use, but I don't want to defend it.

Using one launcher to then launch another launcher isn't just annoying, it leaves you double-exposed.

Also, open-worlds are overrated and I wish so many games would stop relying on them as a crutch.

As I said, still sucks but it's a trade-off I'm still able to accept once in a blue moon, for something I really want to play. Not willing to allow companies to install root kits on my system and not willing to wave my basic privacy good-bye for any game.

Not caring about your open-world gripes too much. Different tastes and all. Plenty of games for you out there, so you don't have to talk down on stuff that others just expressed their passion for. That attitude kinda makes me angry, to be honest.

For me, the best GTA's were around the GTA 3 to GTA: San Andreas era. Everything since has been a disappointment. Even GTA 5 (which was far superior to 4) was far too focused on the heist missions, which I found quite boring.
