I've been trying to find a decent copy of a short animated film called Fantabiblical for years now, ever since I saw it on cable when I was in college. Randomly decided to search YouTube for it this morning, and there was the whole thing, uploaded just a few days ago. Spooky.

From this article by spaceflight historian Amy Shira Teitel:
Quote by How to Not Swear on the Moon:
One [astronaut] in particular had the unfortunate habit of filling space when his mind wandered with profanities. This posed a problem for NASA — with the world watching astronauts walking around the lunar surface, how could the organization be sure the his transmissions from the Moon would be family-friendly?

The story goes that in preparing for his mission, NASA had the astronaut hypnotized. Rather than curse, a psychiatrist put the idea in his head that he would rather hum when his mind wandered.  The hypnotized astronaut is rarely named, but only one man can be heard humming as he skipps across the lunar surface. Transmissions from Commander Pete Conrad are punctuated with “dum de dum dum dum” and “dum do do do, do do” making him the likliest candidate.

I just wanna say that Revolver360 Reactor is the best shoot em up game I've seen in some time. Possibly quite a long time.

As you probably guessed this two dimensional sidescroller has a 3rd axis which can be controlled by rolling with it. Haha.
The user Zaarock on the shmups.system11.org forums has put together an excellent summary covering all the aspects of this game.
I'm just going to add that a game controller is recommended and a free demo can be downloaded from the author's page: http://crosseaglet.xii.jp/game/R360R/download.html

Other than that I have completely fallen for Cherlene's country album. And yes, Archer Vice was miles better than a lot of what came before or after. I'm going to dig for my Old 97's albums now to soothe that alt-country fury.

Lately I quit my old job at a publishing house in Dortmund, waited out the 3 months period of notice and then went on a short holiday to La Palma (one of the Canary islands) last week, where I saw clouds drifting over a volcanic mountain range, hiked through pyroclastic lava fields and primeval forests, got a baseball cap and a nicely tanned fat tummy from eating lots of bananas. (Still no beard.)

Then this week I started my new job at a large publishing house in my former home town Cologne (about 90 minutes away). For the next few months I'll be living in two cities, on the weekends and working days. The new job is turning out to be extremely interesting as I'll be working with some new tools I hadn't had the chance to use before (git among them) and a really nice bunch of people. I think I'll kinda miss working in the midst of the city hustle, but most of all I'll miss my wife and cat during the week. Still I'm extremely happy about this change and I'm looking forward to move all of us back to Cologne eventually.

That picture with the bananas looks like it's upside down.  Do bananas really grow that way?  It's a good thing you didn't run into any psi monkeys while you were there, what with all the bananas and all.

The black end of a banana which tastes like devils anus is connected to a flower head, and it's growing down. As flowers tend to arrange their "heads" towards the sun the banana starts to bend, hence the well known shape. At some point the flower head starts to wilt, that's why you don't see it on Kolyas picture anymore.

Additional banana-trivia, they stay green on the tree and only after they have been "plucked" they start to ripe and become yellow.

Good luck with your new job Kolya.

I also thought they would grow down and was quite surprised. More banana trivia, whoo! A complete banana cluster weighs between 35 to 50 kilograms (80 and 110 pounds). On La Palma there are no machines to harvest them so they are harvested by hand. Bananas on La Palma are slightly smaller and taste sweeter and more aromatic than the ones I can get in German supermarkets. Bananas are not trees but actually huge herbs! They die off after bearing their fruits, but 2 or 3 new sprouts come from the same root ball and repeat the cycle. Additionally they produce seeds. I have two banana plants in my room, that I've grown from seeds.  :D

Odd looking plants. Reminds me of those things from the 70s movie "Invasion of The Body Snatchers".

Also, up to the middle of the 20 century the main industrial banana was the "Gros Michel" but after an worldwide infection it was replaced by the "Cavendish". There seem to be some differences in taste, and I think its amazing to have this two receptions: Talk to an oldtimer about bananas and it's a diffent thing for him. The taste of an early century. Josephine Baker for him, GDR jokes for me. brain...melts

:zen:
Buddha Maus.

Unfortunately Laura Antonelli died on Monday at 73 years old. I had just watched her 1973 film Malizia a few days ago. Now I'm determined to see more of her (films).

Earlier we spoke about colour perception of the ancient Greeks and that they may have known no word for 'blue'. In Homer's Odyssee the sky is often called bronce coloured and the sea is said to be the colour of wine.
Having stayed on the Greek island of Naxos in the Aegean lately I noticed this every night. The sun had set hours before and the sky near the horizon still had a bright orange colour. Something in the atmosphere I guess.

The Ray Cat Solution

In 1981, the US Department of Energy and the civil engineering company Bechtel Corp assembled a task force to help tackle the problem of how to warn future humans to stay away from radioactive nuclear waste sites thousands of years into the future. Perhaps the strangest solution came from the French author Françoise Bastide and the Italian semiologist Paolo Fabbri, who proposed genetically engineering cats to change colour in response to radiation, and creating a mythology of danger around those cats.
