Apparently Windows XP has problems with handling SSL certificates. And as systemshock.org runs on https it won't connect. It seems as default setting it only accepts up to SSL 3.0.

But you can make it work, go into "Internet Properties" (either accessed through Control Center or Internet Explorer), go to "Advanced" and scroll down to the "Security" settings, on here check the Box on "TLS 1.0".
At least for me it made SS2Tool 6 work.

Anything else would need a dedicated internet connection tool worked into SS2Tool. At least if it should connect to a https connection.

That's interesting, thanks for testing. Since this problem is limited to Internet Explorer 6, I'm not going to do anything about it.
Even if one is still using XP, they will have at least IE8 installed, which solves the problem.
According to Microsoft usage of IE6 is less than 1% worldwide except in China, where it's 3.1%.

it will probably be slightly more, as there are bound to be users that never updated explorer as they are using an alternate browser to begin with, but one way or another, this issue should affect very few people. anyway, no harm in mentioning that TLS needs to be enabled if one uses xp with no explorer updates in the download topic.

If you would like it extra fancy you could check for Internet Explorer version and do a popup with the instructions how to solve it.
There is even some ready made code available already http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Get_Internet_Explorer_version

But on the other hand, it really should affect only very vew people.
At least now we know a solution to it and know it's not anything broken with SS2Tool.

Nothing in the networking code has changed. Only the location where rsync is run.
I would ask you to do a comparison but you can't, unless...

I tried connecting via Windows XP. Send Request Error with the new 6.1.0.4 and also with the old 6.1.0.2.
So it probably is something on the server end that changed.

But something completely different. When I try to run SS2Tool on my Windows 7 64bit system the whole program closes right after the installation procedure starts. I even tried a fresh installation (of steam, didn't felt like searching the CD), with the same problem.
Attached is (probably) the last glimpse I get from the tool.
Also, no ss2tool log.
Set kaspersky to disabled and tried switching it off with no effect.

Just tried it. No workie. Fails at the internet connection phase. I am running a firewall, but it usually asks me when something new wants to hit the internet so I can approve or deny, but I am not getting that here. Just the Network Error dialog from SS2Tool 6.1.0.4. Also, no log. It creates the ss2tool directory but it is empty.

Running XP SP3 32 with IE8 up to date as well. Totally unable to connect with it.
Did all the suggested methods to fix it, yet nothing is working.

I'm having the same problem as Yankee Clipper. I download the file, open it, it says it will check for a newer version of itself, click yes, then a few seconds later it pops up with a sending error, internet connection required. windows 7 64bit
i hope someone can figure this out.

Running XP with all service packs installed and google chrome and the GOG Release but everytime I run SS2Tool 6.1.0.4 it says it can't connect, is their a fix for this?

try running the tool from the game's folder, if that won't help, patch up with 5.3, you will still get everything you need (for now).

Actually I haven't paid attention to the installer needs to be placed inside the shock folder.
Now that I placed it inside the shock folder and run it, it is working.
I think this should be made more clearly inside the installer itself.

About the Windows XP issue. Any certificate which requires a higher TLS version than 1.0 won't run on XP, even if you upgrade internet explorer.
Firefox can handle higher certificates becaus it uses it's own certification handler instead of relying on the one from the OS.

Yeah, something server side changed.
I've read into it. Apart from having your own dedicated certificate handler there is no way to patch or add the newer TLS versions to XP.

I don't know what's going on in XP, but I intend to find out if it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. I've brought my netbook with me, which runs XP, so I can test this sometime.

About windows 7 and later: It is admittedly quite some time since I ran the tool from outside the game folder. It used to work that way, but may have gone kaputt without me noticing. The instructions said from the start to place it inside the game folder, but I'll fix this or enforce correct placement.

On this website is a pretty neat table which shows which Windows OS is able to handle which kind of certificates.
So for Windows XP you need to either get an TLS 1.0 certificate or maybe host the files on some filedump without any certificate handle.
The only solution I could think of with everything running on a newer certificate would be to build in a certificate handle into the installer. Something like Mozillas NSS. But that would probably require way too much effort and time.

About the installer. Yeah, at some previous occasion I didn't put it into the folder and it installed just fine, but that was still version 5.

As of 6.0.0.0 it would still work outside the folder. Up thread I mentioned that it would not remember the install folder, so that if you ran the tool again, you had to browse to the folder again. It was at that point I started putting it in the SS2 folder, so don't know about subsequent versions.
