I remember playing AlephOne ages ago. Be more than 6 years ago. Seemed ok. It's no System Shock, and lacks that spark, but it seemed alright. I only played a few levels before losing interest.

Marathon 2 is a big step up in level quality, so it might be worth revisiting it and skipping to M2 if M1 isn't doing it for you. They really are worth a playthrough.

It's a shame that the same can't be done for SS2. If there were source ports for that, I think it would result in some great stuff.

Well, we've got NewDark...

But you're right, a small team(?) working in secret is not going to be able to do stuff with the same scope as everyone having unfettered access to the source.

As far as I am aware this is still not possible. I fiddled a little with Doom mapping recently and of all the WADs I've played I have not seen anything of the sort either, but I could be wrong as I am not dedicated to that community/game.

There's no "native" support for it, but in recent gzDooms there are ways to fake it convincingly.

I suspect that most mapWADs either predate that feature, or are trying to keep compatibility with other ports like prBoom that don't have the same feature. Or possibly it's just too painful for most mappers to bother with.

It requires a bit of trickery but it's been possible since the Boom (the first sourceport that came out) days. It's not used very often, but is doable.
