So did this project die, or what's going on?

last post of the author is about 2 months old. I wouldn't be afraid just yet.

but yeah, I'd really, really hate to add this one to the list of failed SS1 (engine) remakes.

1 May was the release date. Or planned date, anyhow. Still no signs of life.

Well, it's good to hear from Abe Ghiran sometimes, even if it is only a disembodied head talking to you.

I once had an idea to do a system shock tribute thing, which has kind of devolved into more of a SS1 trailer kind of thing. But I wanted to do SS1 as Abe Ghiran's story that ended with decapitation and some random ass dude with no personality but buried in cyberimplants and bandoleers picking his head up and finishing the story.

So I've moved everything over to a new engine. Unity 5.  Going much smoother now that I'm not hindered by certain limitations of the Darkplaces engine.  The code needs to be rewritten still, though much of the basic movement code is done.

Most of my focus has been on content lately. I converted the entire game level geometry into Blender format.  I'll upload the blend file sometime. I'm reluctant to upload it aince it's still WIP but I might just upload it anyway.

I've been making a ton of 3D models for the game objects lately: switches, doors, medical beds, barrels, debris, items, grenades, etc etc.

Unity 5
isn't that the thing that's making everyone weep?

More advanced and versatile than DarkPlaces. Its got my attention.

With Unity 5 they followed the trend of releasing an engine for free and just claim some money from you when you get over a certain income.

There certainly are better engines (performance, etc.), but Unity just already have a wide variety of tools which come with the engine and there is a shitload of 3rd party tutorials and tools available. So people tend to prefer this engine as it requires less work getting into it.
This just stems from the basic version of Unity beeing free for a long time (you had to pay for more advanced options and such), therefore quite a number of "indie developers" picked that engine.
Also it's pretty easy to port your game to different platforms.

I already worked with Unity quite some time ago ( I think it was still Unity 3 then).

It runs like shit and can be very restrictive if you want to think out of the box but it's very well supported, very well documented and easy to get into, on top of having been implemented for any platform of consequence nowadays.

Heh, ya the global illumination is ridiculously buggy, but if you turn that off the performance isnt too bad, and that is with every level and every object being drawn at once.

The issues I was having with Darkplaces were game breakers though. Had to switch to get proper crouch, leaning, and cyberspace support.

Makes sense.

Testing how far you can push something ends up being a big annoying game of trail and error. Stick with it!   d-(^_^)z

JosiahJack, can you upload a video of what you've done so far? You don't have to bother making the video epic (you know, with cinematic zooming, trailer style voice-overs ("Coming soon..." etc), lots of action, and so on), as you already have our attention, and of course we'd rather you spent your (no doubt very limited, like most of us) free time working on Citadel rather than a trailer style video, but it would be great if you posted a video showing how the game was looking and running, to satisfy our curiosity.

If not, then fair enough, it's your project after all. But please consider making a quick video.

Yeah I second this, if you could maybe just capture a little bit of footage for us to look over.... Would be freaking awesome! ^_^

MEMO to Trioptimum Counter Terrorist Team:

This just in!  Transmission from Citadel.  It appears there is a survivor on board the station.

Horrible video quality.  Probably the signal noise coming from Saturn's rings as it was transmitted to us.

P.S. If anyone has a suggestion for a better screen capture utility than Chronolapse, please let me know.  Thanks!

OBS. A little tricky to first set up, but definitely worth it.
Personally I would prefer a slight redo of the cameras, maybe replace the glowing red aperture with a red tinted lens or something, they look a little like laser guns frozen in time. I know you're trying to stay as faithful to the original as possible, but they just look out of place.

I actually kind of agree.  The richness of the new engine makes those red squares stand out more than before.  Plus there's nothing particularly "classic" or "vintage" about a solid red square.

a little advice - don't start fixing for you'll get SCP'd for a year or two. concentrate on getting the first release out.

the world deserves it.
